Dear parishioners and visitors, With all the news in the media regarding possible wars, it can be quite frightening. The magnitude of the weaponry and the long-term effects it will have in the world cannot be fully comprehended. The wars in the past were epic for its day but pales in comparison to what it might be today. It should be our prayer daily that we do not want war to break out and that peace will reign. I believe that deep-down people do not want war unless one is so bent on evil. If humanity would cooperate with God’s plan and desire for people, the world would not have to fear war and terrorism. It is our duty to pray and work for peace among all people and nations. Thank you and God bless you. Msgr. Stoetzel The intercession this week is to pray for peace in the world and an end to the threat of war. ST. PIO RELICS News was released this week that the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman will be one of many sites in North America to host the relics of St. Pio (formerly known as Padre Pio of Pietrelcina San Giovanni Rotondo). KNIGHTS OF ST. JOSEPH For the month of May the Knights of St. Joseph pray that all fathers and single men alike, look to St. Joseph the Worker as a model of inspiration of how we are to conduct ourselves in times of peace as well as the difficult times of adversity and distress. One only has to read the biblical account of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt to escape King Herod’s horrific plan to kill infant sons in the area of Bethlehem. Herod’s fear was that Jesus, would grow up to be a king and come to power one day, thereby taking Herod’s kingdom away from him. King Herod clearly misunderstood and underestimated Jesus’ power as King of Kings and Lords of Lords. Jesus suffered and offered Himself up as a ransom through His passion, dying and winning the victory over death as witnessed in the resurrection on the third day following His crucifixion. The Knights of St. Joseph will have their evening of prayer on Friday, May 12, at 6:00 pm. Please note that the Knights will take the months of June, July and August off and will resume in September. We will though, continue to have monthly prayer intentions during the summer months.

CANDIDATES FOR PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTION ON MAY 7, 2017 SARA TAGGART: Sara has belonged to the Cathedral mostly since birth, and she has developed into one of the parish’s most energetic members. For example, she organized and arranged for the training of servers; she participates in all projects for the Education Committee, including the most recent reception for the First Communicants; she sees to the ordering and distribution of the Little Books; she recently assisted at the Education Committee’s Soup-a-Rama—the list goes on and on. Sara’s energy and organizational skill make our community better, partly because she and her husband have involved their children in parish service since elementary school. Sara’s commitment to keeping the parish strong shows in the diligence with which she approaches all tasks, no matter how small, and in her reliability. Whenever the parish needs help with a project, people know to contact Sara. JESSICA SKEMP: Jessica and her family enjoy an active life at the Cathedral, where Jessica serves on the Education Committee and her husband occasionally sells Scrip. Their children attend Aquinas Catholic Schools. An energetic attorney, Jessica brings a determined spirit to her faith life, too, seeking to improve the lives of others. For example, she organized the Education Committee’s most recent Soup-a-Rama in January, an event that generated over $300 to support struggling learners at Aquinas Middle and High Schools. She loves the Cathedral for its beautiful liturgies, and she looks forward to participation in parish life for many years. Her warmth and humor spark happy laughter among companions because Jessica celebrates her faith joyfully. VIRGINIA NELSON: A native of Sparta, Virginia and her family returned to the La Crosse area in

1979. They started out at another parish, but during an illness, they found their way to the Cathedral and took refuge in the comfort and consolation they needed. The Cathedral “is really my support,” says Virginia, grateful for the generous gifts of the parish and its people. She served as a Eucharistic Minister in times past, and she recently returned to that service. As a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Virginia anticipates listening to people’s concerns and bringing them forward to the attention of the pastor and the council. DEAN STROUD: Dean entered the Roman Catholic Church in 2007 via RCIA, and he now coordinates the Cathedral’s RCIA program. He enjoys the priests, and he loves the beauty of the Cathedral building, as well as its music and the orthodoxy of the liturgy. While he welcomes the friendliness of fellow parishioners, he would like to see more people at Mass—especially young families. Dean also finds the many spiritual and educational opportunities offered at the Cathedral, especially those led by parish members, a wonderful resource, and he would like to see more of these. Besides running the Cathedral’s RCIA program, he lectors at Mass. He wishes to explore the monastery of St. Paul Street Evangelization as a way to reach disaffected and uncatechized individuals. TAMMY BECKER: Tammy and her family have belonged to the Cathedral since 1988, and she has served as a Eucharistic Minister since Msgr. Gorman’s time here. An accountant with her own firm, Tammy generously has offered her valued opinions on the parish’s Finance Committee, too. She loves the Cathedral’s beauty, especially its windows. On a sunny morning, as she sits in the sanctuary, she sees the people in the pews bathed in celestial light and feels uplifted. Tammy would like to see more families attending Mass, for she recognizes how that discipline has sustained her own family.

AQUINAS CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE - BY TED KNUTSON Just one month after the public kickoff of Our Next Step Forward Capital Campaign, I am pleased to announce that we have raised over $1.4 million. These funds will help sustain the high level of service the Aquinas Catholic School System delivers today. Our effort to bolster our enrol lment, improve our technology infrastructure and upgrade our facilities continues to expand with 17 more campaign volunteers joining our ranks last month. Almost 200 people attended our Founder’s Day Dinner, which was celebrated on Sunday, April 23rd. This was the largest turnout in recent years. The night was a celebration of the wonderful mission and accomplishments of the Aquinas Catholic School system and the people who have sacrificed to ensure its success. With your help, Our Next Step Forward Capital Campaign will continue to help drive this success. The support of our effort has been overwhelmingly tremendous. So far 85% of those who have reached a decision have decided to provide a gift or pledge. On behalf of the Aquinas Catholic Schools family, I express my deepest gratitude to those who have made this campaign a priority. Please pray that many more generous donors will support our goals and reward our campaign efforts, which will continue through the fall of this year. Please visit www.aquinasschools.org and click on “Capital Campaign” to find out more about this noble effort or to contact a member of our campaign leadership team. Thank you so much.
