Green Expo planned for Earth DayMaking little changes can have a big impact. That’s the thinking behind the Earth Wise Expo at Touchmark’s Fox Pointe neighborhood.

The event on April 22 (Earth Day) will be held from 1 to 4 pm in Fox Pointe model homes, and include live entertainment and refreshments. Vendors will use the homes to demonstrate different ways everyone can be more environmentally friendly. For example, Tri-County Recycling Center and Landfill will explain what can and can’t be recycled, and The Veggie Shed and Supply Depot will be on hand to talk about consumer-supported agriculture.

“We thought offering the public educational programs about little steps we can all take to make a difference for our community and planet would be the ideal way to celebrate Earth Day,” says Touchmark Executive Director Barb Pandolfo.

Other vendors scheduled to appear include Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Solar Energy, NEW Plastics, Vande Hey Landscaping, Wild Ones Fox Valley, and more. Bill Geenen, a Touchmark resident who installed solar panels on his home, will also discuss that process and his work.

“I see my role as a wellness nurse to be a resource for residents to help them stay independent as long as possible,” says Broderick. “I’ve really

enjoyed getting to know the residents and answering their questions or concerns about their health and well-being.”

Based in the wellness office on the first floor in Wing A, Broderick also offers complimentary blood pressure clinics the first and third Mondays of each month.

How does the environment affect our wellness?

Environmental wellness refers to our surroundings, starting with our immediate areas and expanding into the world around us, including the planet and the space around our planet. Everything—from natural resources (air, water, soil) to noise, furniture, and food—forms our environment.

Research proves that nature makes us feel energized and alive and refreshes our mind, body, and spirit. It also can improve our mental and physical health. For example, according to the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, those who live closer to a green space experience less anxiety and depression than those who live farther from one.

Benefits of vitamin D New research suggests that vitamin D plays a major role in hormone balance. A healthy dose of vitamin D regulates body fat due to its influence on levels of leptin, the hormone that tells us we are full.

Exposure to sunlight prompts our body to produce vitamin D. Individuals need as little as five minutes in nature each day to receive benefits to improve our mental and physical health. (Note: people living in northern climates often need to take a vitamin D supplement in addition to spending time outdoors.)

Mounting evidence of the importance of our environment on health suggests all of us can benefit from participating in green efforts such as:

• Use walking trails, meditation/healing gardens• Replace air filters; use fewer chemicals when cleaning• Conserve energy and water; learn more; speak out;

volunteer in your community• Recycle/use recyclable materials

By helping the environment, we protect ourselves from environmental threats such as UV radiation, chemicals, air and water pollution, global warming, and secondhand smoke.

Recognize that every action, big or small, directly or indirectly affects us and our surroundings and natural environment. It is often easy to forget that the environment is an important part of our overall wellness plan and that our behavior toward it can have a major impact on our personal well-being.
