Touchmark announces expansion: new addition will include memory care servicesTouchmark is waiting for a building permit to start construction on an expansion of its main building (The Grande) that will add 62,000 square feet of suites and common areas for people looking for independent and assisted living as well as memory care. By adding the memory care service, Touchmark will increase its array of services and provide a full continuum of care.

The $18.4-million project will provide work for approximately 150 people during construction and add about 36 staff positions when completed by fall 2015.

Private memory care addedA new service will be located on the first floor and is designed specifically for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other age-related

dementia illnesses. Thirty-two private studios with ensuites will be available.

In order to provide a homelike setting, the suites will be divided between two wings—each with its own kitchen, living room, and areas for dining, activities, music, and art. The two wings will share a beauty salon/barber shop, spa baths, family meeting room, and a secure outdoor courtyard.

The design draws on the latest research for providing a comfortable and secure environment for people experiencing memory loss. The warm, comfortable setting is designed as an open plan that includes electric fireplaces, bookcases, carefully selected artwork, and other touches that evoke the familiarity and comfort of home.

Research on cognition and memory is finding that people who participate in more mentally stimulating activities have a slower rate of decline in memory (Wilson, et al, 2013, Journal of Neurology). Apps and websites like Fit Brains, Lumosity, Tetris, Sudoku2 all work on your computer, tablet device, or smart phone. Touchmark recently conducted a webinar with team members

that covered cutting-edge ideas for activities and cognitive stimulation. We now are working to develop programming throughout Touchmark communities that takes advantage of this technology for enhancing memory.

All suites in the new addition are private and not affiliated with Alberta Health Services (AHS). All include around-the-clock staffing, and residents will have access to amenities in The Grande and the Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment Program™.

New independent and assisted living options, tooThe new three-story building also will include additional suites offering independent and assisted living services:

• The top floor will offer 19 suites. Design options include one-bedroom and two-bedroom choices. Each suite will include a full kitchen with refrigerator, range, and microwave. There will also be common activity and conversation areas as well as a social room and laundry.

• The second floor is designed to provide assisted living services and will offer 20 suites, a dining room, activity and conversation areas, and laundry room. Suite

options include a choice of one bedroom or one bedroom with den. Each will include a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave.

“This expansion and new service will benefit families who have expressed a desire to have memory care services as part of Touchmark’s continuum of care,” says Executive Director Leanne Gugenheimer. “Because families have been responding to Touchmark’s excellent value, we are maintaining wait lists for most of our services, and we are excited to be offering these additional suites.”

Architects are Allan Partridge, AAA, principal with Group2 Architecture Interior Design Ltd., and Joseph Billig, AIA, senior vice president of Architecture with Touchmark Development & Construction. Chandos is the general contractor. Rick Wessell, senior vice president and director of Construction for Touchmark Development & Construction, will oversee the expansion.

Only select few homesites remainAlong with the suites and services offered in the new addition, people can opt to build and own well-appointed bungalows instead. Only a few lots remain, including some desirable ravine lots. The homes are situated in a park-like setting that includes water features and easy access to the city’s walking paths and bike trails.

These stunning single-family bungalows feature spacious great rooms, master suites, hardwood floors, granite countertops, and other exceptional finishes. Designed and built by Randy Ettinger’s Celebration Homes, they are easily accessed with no steps at the front door or garage, and the entire project was recognized in 2013 as a finalist in the Mayor’s Award for Universal Design in Architecture. CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS

Celebrate! Sixty residents and Edmonton volunteers were honoured during the Volunteer Appreciation Celebration Tea. Each person received a framed certificate that was custom designed by the Full Life team. This month, we’re featuring

bungalow 2 with the Waterton floor plan of 1,638 square feet. This duplex is move-in ready with a fully finished basement, including a multimedia theatre room wired for full surround sound.

The home features maple hardwood flooring, tile, new paint throughout, new carpet upstairs, a double-car garage with built-in workbench, central vacuum system, and rough-in security system.

During Simplifying Life & Downsizing with Deborah McCarthy from TLC Transitions, people learned about sorting, donating, and passing along items that are not used anymore. Laughter and questions punctuated the end of the presentation. Audience members had several questions for Deborah, including one about the garage and tools. During another Lunch ’n Learn, a local licensed naturopathic physician talked

about stress. She covered how stressors (like fatigue and fear) affect a person and how to manage stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
