Celebrating Healthy Aging Month and Active Aging Week What are you doing to stay healthy? Throughout September, join us and focus on ways to be healthy. If you are already a club member and you know friends who haven’t yet joined, invite them to join you for a day (or a week) to see what the club offers.

Senior Fitness Testing: join us. The club will provide testing Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 8 am to 4 pm. These different tests will provide data that will compare the participants with averages from their peer groups. The comparative information can indicate where improvement would be helpful and healthful. Club staff will help explain the results. Tests include: • Sit-to-Stand Test: how many times a person can stand up and sit down in 30 seconds. Tests leg strength.

• Arm Curl: how many arm curls a person can do in 30 seconds. Tests arm strength. • Eight-foot Up-and-Go: stand up and walk eight feet. Go around a cone and back to the chair and sit. Tests agility. • Two-minute Step Test: march in place for two minutes with knees lifting at least halfway between knee and hips. Tests endurance. • Chair Sit-and-Reach: sit in a chair and try to touch toes while keeping a straight leg. Tests lower-body flexibility. • Back Scratch: place one arm up and touch back while simultaneously reaching other arm up behind back and trying to touch the two hands together. Tests upper-body flexibility.

Public invited to try out fitness classes On Thursday, Sept. 18, the club will offer various classes, such as Zumba® , Aqua Zumba® , and Circut Class. For more information, please call 701-355-1280.

At Touchmark, we think a lot about the aspects of wellness and aging well. As many know, there are some fundamental guidelines for healthy aging, such as don’t smoke, get regular exercise, eat healthy foods, control weight, socialize, and keep learning.

Recent research also suggests that having a “sense of purpose” in life may help us live longer. Researchers found that individuals who reported having

greater purpose in life had a 15% lower risk of death than those who said they were more or less aimless. Furthermore, the benefits of having a sense of purpose apply to all ages (Hill and Turiano).

At Touchmark, we are intentionally purposeful. Each day, we endeavor to radiate Touchmark’s long-held values of teamwork, service, integrity, compassion, and excellence. These values are reflected in the Touchmark Full Life—from the homes we design and build, the programs and services we provide, and the relationships we nurture.

As I reflect on the elements of a purposeful life, I recall the poem The Dash, by Linda Ellis, which can be found on the Internet. Basically, the poem describes the dash that is etched in a tombstone between a person’s birthdate and death date. The dash represents all of one’s activities and contributions.

Let’s live “the dash” and make a difference. Take advantage of all Touchmark has to offer. A PURPOSE{FULL} life is filled with rewards—for you and others.
