Narrative Theories - Todorov
Arguably the most famous narrative theory is Todorov’s narrative theory. This theory suggests that a story will begin with an equilibrium/status however this will be interrupted by a chain of events. However the theory ends suggesting that these chain of events will be overcome and ultimately order will be restored to the fictional world.
The Stages of Todorov’s Narrative Theory
• A state of equilibrium to begin with.• The equilibrium is disrupted by an action or
event.• The recognition that a disruption has occurred.• The disruption is attempted to be repaired
usually by the main protagonist.• Balance is eventually restored in the fictional
world.
Auteur Theory
The auteur theory is the theory that directors are regarded as sole creators of their films and ultimately are the decisive part between a good or bad film. Francois Trauffaut is quoted to have said “there are no good or bad movies, only good or bad directors.” We will use these ideas attempting to make our opening sequence as good as it can be with our use of shots, lighting, sound, editing etc.
How the Auteur Theory relates to us
The Auteur Theory relates to use in the same way that we aim to create a solid piece of cinematography in our opening sequence and with the addition of certain shots, use of lighting and good techniques it will hopefully gain a positive reaction from the mass horror audience we are reaching out to.
