These sessions will introduce the basic natural processes,
historical geographic ranges, and potential
impacts of the natural hazards that
are unique to the coastal zone.

Introduction: What is a Coastal Hazard?
Session 6 : Coastal Hazards ICoastal Hazards Management CourseSlide 6. 2, Introduction
Coastal Hazards can be defined as natural hazards that occur within the coastal zone.
The following major coastal hazards will be discussed in this session:
• Hurricanes• Coastal Erosion• Tsunami• Flooding

What is a Flood?

There are two types of floods• Flash Floods
Riverine floods are common in low lying, sandy coastal areas, whereas flash floods are more common along rocky coasts

Hurricanes can take many different tracks, but are limited to the Western Hemisphere. Cyclones and typhoons are found elsewhere in the world.

Coastal Erosion is very localized. Some sections of sandy beaches will erode, while close by another section will accrete sand.
