Welcome!

St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome,

may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by

the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ’s love into the world.

The Women of St. Philip Will “Pay It Forward”

The Women of St. Philip are encouraging all the women of our congregation to save their spare change so we can pool our resources to help other women both locally and abroad who are less for-tunate. Collection boxes for your spare change are available at the Welcome Center kiosk.

“Pay It Forward” offerings will be collected in worship on November 16th and 17th, at all three worship services. The “Pay It Forward” donations will then be equally divided among the following three charities:

Baby Haven - founded in 1992; supports women, mothers, and infants. They offer intensive addiction treatment with a 90% suc-cess rate. Delores Project - formed in 2000; provides shelter and services for homeless women. Women’s Development Association - founded in 1997; its mis-sion is to encourage, train, and support women and children in lit-eracy, health education, and economic empowerment.

New this year we will share what the Women of St. Philip have done to “Pay It Forward.” On display in the narthex are items which the various women’s ministries have created. Please take a moment to view and appreciate what the women have done.

Last, but definitely not least, the Quilting Circle recently received some materials to make a quilt. Thanks to the talents and energy of Margaret Rusch, we now have a beautiful finished quilt! Marga-ret is “paying it forward” by offering the quilt to the congregation to help raise funds for the womens’ ministries. Marilyn Reitz has also donated a beautiful hand crocheted baby blanket. Both items are being offered in a drawing to take place on November 17th. Tickets cost $1 each, or 6 tickets for $5. Please be a part of this wonderful fundraiser—not only will you be supporting the womens’ ministry efforts, but you may be the lucky person who has their name drawn for the quilt or the blanket!

Worship Notes - November 10, 2013

INTRODUCTION: We worship on the first day of the

week because our Savior was raised on that day. Every

Sunday is a little Easter. This Sunday feels more like

Easter than many as the appointed texts celebrate the

reality of the resurrection. Live it up this Lord's day. Our

God is the God of the living.

FIRST READING: Job 19:23-27a Job suffers the loss of children, wealth, and health. Ac-

cused by his companions of wrongdoing, he knows him-

self to be innocent. Here, in the midst of his suffering,

Job clings to the radical hope that his vindicator, his

redeemer, lives; and that one day he himself will see

God.

SECOND READING: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

Paul writes to encourage the church at Thessalonica in a

time of confusion and opposition. Here, the confusion

concerned the return of Christ. Paul writes to those who

were allowing their concern over Jesus' imminent return

to divert them from the central teachings of the gospel.

GOSPEL: Luke 20:27-38 The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection of

the dead, try to trap Jesus. They formulate the convo-

luted case of a serial widow who marries a succession of

seven brothers. Jesus responds by teaching about God,

to whom all are alive and in whom all relationships are

fulfilled.

WORSHIP

Please Be Courteous

Please silence all electronic de-vices when in the sanctuary. Thank you.

WORDS OF WELCOME & MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

The musical call to worship begins the service,

encouraging us to quietly prepare our hearts and

minds to receive the Word of God.

*CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Please stand as you are able and face the

baptismal font at the rear of the sanctuary.

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked

at baptism, as the minister begins.

P: In the name of God the Father of glory; in the name of God the † Son, our Redeemer, in the name of God the holy and life-giving Spirit. C: Amen.

P: The Sun of righteousness shall rise with shining beams of healing. Let us gather under the wings of God’s mercy.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: Gracious God, C: We acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins– those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you. We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in your everything is revealed. Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage

>>>

>>>of guilt; and work in us that which is pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P: With a heart full of mercy and compassion, God saves us and † forgives us all our sins. Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us and by the light of the Holy Spirit guides our feet into the way of peace. C: Amen.

Please turn and face forward for the opening hymn.

Children’s Bulletins & Participation

Children are always welcome at our services!

During the service they are encouraged to come for-ward to the altar for a spe-

cial children’s conversation and then again with their offerings. We also have special bulletins for children - please ask the ushers.

Family Advent Readers Needed

Please join our church family in preparing for the wonder of Advent by volunteering your fam-ily to be readers at one of the worship services during the Advent season.

A family is needed at each of the Sunday ser-vices during Advent (December 1, 8, 15, and 22). The family will read a short scripture read-ing, light the candle on the Advent wreath, and and add a figure to the nativity scene.

Families come in all shapes and sizes, and all family groups are welcome to participate.

If you are interested in being an Advent reader, please call Jan Philpy (317.709.5045) or email her at [email protected].

COMMUNITY CARE & COMPASSION

Volunteer Opportunity

A local adult day program is looking for volun-teers to help with day outings. The day pro-gram center cares for people who often have some form of de-mentia, many with Alzheimer’s, but few have physical im-pairments. If you are comfortable working with seniors or those who are impaired, they need your help!

Family Promise Christmas Stockings

Dear Friends of Family Promise,

For the second year, our Family Promise team has committed to provide Christmas stockings filled

with gifts for the families who will be attending the Family Promise

annual holiday party on December 8th.

The Family Promise team provides the empty stockings, which can be picked up in the nar-thex beginning Saturday, November 23rd. With the stocking will be some information about a specific person which you can use as you shop for gifts to fill the stocking. The filled stockings need to be returned to the church by December 6th.

For more information, please contact Bob Delong at 303.973.3996.

Angels All Around

day season.

Please take an ornament to help make the holi-days special for these wonderful people. Re-member the ELCA motto - “God’s Work. Our Hands.” to make a joyful Christmas for those in need.

Bring your UNWRAPPED gifts (you may use a gift bag if desired) to the church office, along with the ornament from the Angel Tree by Sun-day, December 8th. Thank you for your support of this outreach ministry!

Sr. High Mission Trip

In the summer of 2014, the Sr. High Youth (youth currently in 8th-12th grade) will be going on a mission trip to Anapra, Mexico!

Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp will be leading us as we partner with Casas Por Cristo (Homes for Christ) to build an 11’ x 22’ house for a family. This week will be filled with worship, work, play, and prayer to-gether. This is a life changing event as we build relationships with each other and with a Mexi-can family as we build a house. Rainbow Trail has gone to Mexico for the past three years through Sunland Park, New Mexico to Anapra, Mexico instead of El Paso to Juarez, Mexico. Rainbow Trail assures us that we will be stay-ing in safe and secure housing in Mexico, as well as working in a safe location. We hope you will consider joining us for this amazing mission trip.

The Mission Trip is July 27-August 2, 2014. Sign up by December 1, 2013 by turning in your $100 deposit to Pastor Brad.

DISCIPLESHIP

Needed: Confirmation Mentors

We need adults to be Confirmation Mentors! St. Philip is starting a mentoring program for our confirmation students. Our goal is to pair up one confirmation student with one adult in the congregation. There are three weeks in Advent this year, so the mentors will meet with their mentee for three consecutive weeks on Wednesday evenings starting on December 4th. We will come together for dinner at 6pm, the confirmation students and mentors will eat to-gether, and then after dinner will continue the conversation one-on-one. At 7:00pm we will enter the sanctuary for the mid-week advent service.

Your responsibility as a mentor will be to get to know the confirmation student you are paired with, talk with them about your faith, pray for them, encourage them, and support them in their life and faith.

Interested in being a mentor for one of our con-firmation students? This year we have nineteen confirmation students, so we need nineteen mentors. If you are inter-ested in being a mentor, please sign up at the Welcome Center kiosk and join us for an infor-mational meeting on Wednes-day, Nov. 20th at 7:00pm. If you have any questions, con-tact Pastor Brad.

Senior High Youth Group

Senior High Youth Group on Sunday nights is THE place to be! All youth in 9th-12th grade are welcome to join us on Sunday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm. We meet in the youth room at church as we join in fun, fellowship, Bible study, games, service and much more. Bring your friends and neighbors - all senior high youth are welcome!

November 10th: Capture the Flag An all-time favorite! Come join us as we capture the flag.

November 17th: Signs! There are signs all over the place; come join us as we search, fol-low and try to read signs in the fun and com-petitive game!

Study of John, Continued

Please join discussion leaders Amy Fritsch and Juli Jacobson as they open a study of 1, 2, and 3 John. This class is a continuation of 1 John.

John brings the tension of good and evil from an abstract battle to a personal struggle in our daily thoughts and actions. We will continue to study the light and love of Jesus in the final chapters, focusing on the two commandments: Love the Lord with all your heart, and Love your brother as yourself.

Please come join us. Everyone is welcome! This class begins Sunday, November 3rd, and meets in MC-1.

Facing the Mourning

This interactive support group has been de-signed by Heartlight Center of Denver for peo-ple of all ages, types of death, and length of grieving. The group is designed to help with the grieving process by using visual and thought-provoking tools. During the four sessions, you will be shown tools, ideas, and creative projects which can help you as you travel through the mourning process. You will be offered an op-portunity for learning and self-discovery to keep your loved one’s memory alive for you and your family.

The group will meet on Sundays, from 9:30-10:30am on November 10th, 24th, and Decem-ber 8th and 15th in the Fireside Room. Pastor Nathan will be the group facilitator. Sign-up sheets are at the adult education table in the narthex. Questions? Please contact Pastor Na-than.

Meeting God in Our Daily Life

How do we as Lutheran Christians tell the good news about the God-man Jesus?

This is a journey, to discover how in the image of God, we tell the story of God’s love for us in the beginning and through the life, passion, death and resurrection of his son, Jesus. We will explore how we do this throughout our daily life in Actions, Deeds and Words.

We will also examine how we tell God’s story though our personal story.

This class, taught by Roger Pettner, will meet in MC-2. The next class will begin on Nov. 3rd.

Please Save the Date! SPLC Sunday School Christmas Program

Sunday, December 15 - 10:45am service

The Sunday school children will perform their Christmas program at the 10:45am service on Sunday, December 15. The title of this year’s program is “The Birth of Jesus.”

Rehearsals will begin in November, and will take place during Sunday school.

Any child who plays an instrument or sings is welcome to present a song for the prelude/offering/communion time. There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the narthex.

If you haven’t yet turned in your commitment pledge card, there is still time to do so. Simply drop it in the offering plate, or send it to the church office. You can even call Business Ad-ministrator Linda Goodnough or email your in-formation. Please do it as soon as you can - the final budget numbers will be presented at the congregational meeting on November 17.

Communications Team Task Force Needs Members

Are you looking for a way to contribute to our church's ministry but your time is limited? The Communications team needs you! A Commu-nications task force is being formed to update and write several church policies, and writers are urgently needed. The way we connect with people on our website, through our new digital sign, and on Facebook is vital and fluid, but written guidelines need to be established. We also need to take a look at some of our well-entrenched policies and see if they need a touch up. We will be meeting on an ad-hoc ba-sis to discuss, polish and, in some cases, cre-ate policy for the church. Sounds exciting, right? Maybe not, but it is important. And join-ing this task force doesn't involve years-long commitment. So if you have knowledge of the internet, enjoy writing, or just want to help out in some way, please contact the church office and find out how you can join. Contact Linda Goodnough at 303.979.4491 or email her at [email protected].

Church Council Report Facility Use

After thoughtful consideration and study, the church council voted unanimously to no longer rent portions of the church to for-profit organi-zations. This action was taken to protect the federal, state, and property tax-exempt status at St. Philip. Two organizations that will be im-pacted are Knippenberg & Associates, and Lifeline Health Screening. The council wishes to extend their thanks to both organizations for their service to our community.

For further information please contact one of your current council members.

CHURCH NEWS

Thank you to all the men and women who helped gather the fallen leaves this year. A special thanks goes to John Breed, Bill Stouder, Beth and Bill Faerber, Mark Celus-niak, Bob Delong, Monica Auch, Dick Rusch, Chuck Krieger and Roger Bracken. The trees are so lovely during the summer and we re-ceive numerous compliments on them through-out the hot months. But as the leaves tumble to the ground over and over and over, it becomes a painstaking and tedious process to clean them all up. Please accept my sincerest thanks for all your time and efforts. St. Philip Lutheran Church would not be the same without you and all your service. May God bless all of you. Linda GoodnoughLinda GoodnoughLinda GoodnoughLinda Goodnough
