Worship Notes - May 19, 2013

INTRODUCTION Pentecost is a day of promises fulfilled. The prom-

ised Spirit of God is poured out. The baptized have

become "children of God" and " joint heirs with

Christ." By the power of the Spirit we have seen the

face of the Father in his only begotten Son and been

saved by him. Bless the Lord, O my soul.

FIRST READING: Acts 2:1-21 Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told his disci-

ples they would be filled with the Holy Spirit. Now,

surrounded by signs of fire, wind, and a variety of

languages in their midst, the people were amazed

and astonished at Jesus' promise coming true.

SECOND READING: Romans 8:14-17 Here Paul speaks about the mystery of baptism:

through the Holy Spirit we are claimed, gathered,

and welcomed into Christ's body, the church. And

we receive new names in our adoption: brother, sis-

ter, child of God.

GOSPEL: John 14:8-27 Though the disciples struggle with Jesus' nature and

identity, they receive the promise that they too will

be identified with God and God's mission. Though

he must leave them now, Jesus promises the coming

of the Advocate whom God will send to comfort and

enlighten them.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen.

P: Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: God of grace and glory, C: you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holi-ness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.

P: Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores inno-cence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! C: Amen.

Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly May 2-4, 2013

By Jan Philpy

Pastor Nathan, Pastor Brad, Jay Breidenbach, Nancy Beyer, and Jan and Gary Philpy attended the RMS Assembly May 2-4 in Loveland CO. This year’s theme was Deeply Rooted, Bearing Fruit. You may recall a request earlier this year to answer two questions related to this topic. The answers received were used as part of an amazing, giant “tree of life” centered in the hotel ballroom during the assembly. Highlights of the assembly were as follows:

♦ Worship services on Thursday evening and Saturday after-noon, organized by our own Director of Music Ministries, Nancy Beyer. Our processional cross was used as well.

♦ Skyping with our companion synods in Madagascar. They sang to us; we sang to them—technology is amazing!

♦ A fun filled celebration of the ELCA’s 25th anniversary

♦ Interesting breakouts and excursions on a wide variety of topics

♦ Announcement that the synod has met the goal for the Ma-laria Campaign early! Many people around the world now have mosquito nets and medicine, but the campaign contin-ues with the hope of eradicating this disease from the planet.

♦ Resolutions passed on rostered staff professional health and prayer life, Holy Land awareness and support, approval of a plan to move the synod office from its current location to the former Valley Lutheran Church, and designating Allan Bjornberg as Bishop Emeritus.

See one of us for more information or if you have questions!

COMMUNITY CARE

Dipes ‘N Wipes Drive

Help us reach our goal of 2,000 diapers!

St. Philip is supporting the Love INC programs Dipes ‘N Wipes and Haven’s Hope with a dia-per drive the month of May. Our goal is to col-lect 2,000 diapers; so far, on the first Sunday in May we collected 350 diapers and 1,000 wipes. That’s a great start, but we need to keep the momentum going and growing!

Needed sizes are: 4, 5, 6. Baby wipes are also needed. Please place your donations in the box next to the Welcome Center kiosk.

Cash is also welcome and needed! There are containers for donations on the kiosk. For more information, contact Rebecca Near at 303.730.8230.

Madagascar Dinner a Success!

We had a wonderful time at the Madagascar Dinner on May 5th. There were 45 people who attended, and just over $2600 was raised for the trip to Madagascar! It is exciting to an-nounce that we are getting very close to reach-ing our goal for the funds needed for this sum-mer's trip to visit our companion synods in Madagascar.

We would like to express our gratitude to all who have contributed and have invested in this trip. Please keep Nikki Giesen, Roseanna Doty and Pastor Brad Doty in your prayers as our departure date approaches. We are now only 6 weeks away!

It’s not too early to be planning for Vacation Bible School! Whether you have children who will be attending, you wish to volunteer to help, or you want to make a donation of goods or cash, now is the time to begin making plans!

The theme this summer is “Blessed to be a Blessing.” The great counselors from Rainbow Trail will again be presenting the curriculum.

Keep watching the Hap-penings for more details which will be coming soon!

THE STORY READ THE STORY.

EXPERIENCE THE BIBLE.

Have you wanted to get involved in a Bible study that will lead you into a closer relation-ship with God? Then we have just the one for you!

Beginning in the fall of this year (September 9th to be exact), St. Philip will initiate a new com-prehensive Bible study called, “The Story.” Put together to help us learn more about “God’s Story” as it is told in scripture and how that story intersects with “Our Story,” this 31 ses-sion study will transform your life. You will learn how God’s story continues to be lived out today in the lives of people like us.

Offered on Monday nights from 7:00 – 8:30P (September – May), we will come together to learn how God works in our lives.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity! Set aside this time for your spiritual growth. Let Pastor Nathan know today that you are ready to participate.

New Addition to Wall of Crosses

Thanks go out to Diane and Roger Bracken, for the newest addition to our Wall of Crosses in the front office.

The Brackens just returned from a visit to Washington, D.C., where they had an opportu-nity to visit the National Cathedral. Diane picked out this beautiful cross, made from olive wood from the Holy Land to bring back to St. Philip. The cross has the Lord’s Prayer en-graved on the face, and is very intricate.

The cross itself is called the Jerusalem Cross or the Five-Fold Cross or the Crusaders Cross. It has a large cross potent in the center, with four Greek crosslets or crosslets potent in each of the four quadrants. According to vari-ous sources, the five-fold cross signifies the five wounds of Christ, or the word of Jesus spreading to the four corners of the world, or Christ and the four evangelists.

Thank you, Roger and Diane, for thinking of us while you were traveling, and for bringing back this fascinating cross. We hope that people will come to the office to see this new cross!

Volunteers Needed for Mowing

It’s officially spring - the grass is greening and growing, which means that it’s time to bring out the lawn mowers!

The Property team needs some volunteers for the weekly mowing of the church grounds. We have several teams that share responsibility for keeping the grass cut; so it is approximately once a month. Anyone, male or female, young or old, is welcome to join the mowing brigade. St. Philip supplies the equipment, you supply the muscle.

Interested? Questions? Contact Linda Goodnough in the church office at

303.979.4491 or email at lgood-nough @stphilip-co.org.

On Saturday, May 25th, at 11:00am, a memorial service will be held for Lola Littleton. Lola passed away on May 13th.

St. Philip extends its deepest sympathy to Lola’s family. She will be greatly missed.
