Welcome!

the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ’s love into the world.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament Was A Hole in One! By Linda Goodnough, Business Administrator

The 2nd annual golf tournament and silent auction was a wonderful success. Our day at the golf course was fantastic--the weather was perfect, the course was in pristine condition and the fun and fellowship was hearty. Winners of the contests were:

• Lowest game (gross—no handicap) was the team of Chris White with a score of 62

• 1st lowest net (handicap on 6 unknown holes) was the team of Bill Shepard including Tom Henning, Peter Mielke and Beth Mielke with a score of 68

• 2nd lowest net (handicap on 6 unknown holes) was the team of Mark Celusniak also with a score of 68 (tie-breaker performed by Raccoon Creek)

• Closest to the Pin (women) – JoAnn Breitbach • Closest to the Pin (men) – Doug Graber • Longest drive (men) – Ed Brady • Longest drive (women) – Roseanna Doty • Our putting contest was run and measured by Virginia Zimmerman with all proceeds going

towards the winners.

All the bottles on our “Wall of Wine” (suggested by Dr. Nancy Beyer) were sold. It was a lot of fun to see who got which wine (labels were especially fun) and we look forward to even greater things next year with this activity.

The silent auction was open for two weekends for you, our parishioners. The frenzy at the end of the bidding was hilarious—all wanting to get their final bids in just before the buzzer! Almost all items were sold. I sincerely thank each of you donors as well as each of you browsers and buyers for all your participation and especially your support for St. Philip Lutheran Church.

Worship Notes - September 29, 2013

INTRODUCTION Consideration of and care for those in need

(especially those "at our gate," visible to us, of

whom we are aware) is an essential component of

good stewardship. It is in the sharing of wealth that

we avoid the snare of wealth. It is the one whom

death could not hold—who comes to us risen from

the dead—who can free us from the death grip of

greed.

FIRST READING: Amos 6:1a, 4-7 The prophet Amos announces that Israel's great

wealth is a cause not for rejoicing but rather sor-

row, because God's people have forgotten how to

share their wealth with the poor. The wealthy will

be the first to go into exile when judgment comes.

SECOND READING: 1 Timothy 6:6-19 Timothy is reminded of the confession he made at

his baptism and of its implications for daily life. His

priorities will be different from those of people who

merely want to be rich.

GOSPEL: Luke 16:19-31

Jesus tells a parable in which the poor one is "lifted

up" and the rich one is "sent away empty." Jesus

makes it clear that this ethic of merciful reversal is

not new but is as old as Moses and the prophets.

WORSHIP

Please Be Courteous

Please silence all electronic de-vices when in the sanctuary. Thank you.

CALL TO WORSHIP

*CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Please stand as you are able and face the

baptismal font at the rear of the sanctuary.

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked

at baptism, as the minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, † one God, the only Sovereign, who dwells in light; Christ Je-sus, who came to save sinners, the Holy Spirit, who lives within us. C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: God of overflowing grace, C: we come to you with repentant hearts.

Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. For-give us for passing by the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleet-ing treasures. Forgive us our neglect and thoughtlessness. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, >>>

and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through Jesus Christ, our Sav-ior and Lord. Amen.

P: There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in † Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God’s mercy, now and forever. C: Amen.

Please turn and face forward for the opening hymn.

GOLF TOURNAMENT REPORT

7 “All of us sharing our gifts in service”

EVENTS

Theater and Theology “Just Like Us”

Tuesday, October 22, 2103

Five people from St. Philip will be attending the first play of the 2013-14 season on October 1st. Now we are taking reservations for the second production, “Just Like Us,” on Tuesday, October 22nd at 6:30pm, at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

“Just Like Us” is based on Helen Thorpe’s bestselling book, this play follows four Latina girls in Den-ver as immigration status begins to erode their opportunities and their friendships. When the crime of an illegal immigrant ignites a political firestorm, the girls, the city, and the nation must ask them-selves who has the right to live in America when achievements and documents collide.

If you would like to join us for the second production, please let Pastor Nathan know, and sign up at the Welcome Center kiosk in the narthex. The cost is $34 per person. Checks should be made out to St. Philip Lutheran Church; please write “Theatre and Theology” on the memo line. Reservation deadline for “Just Like Us” is September 30th. After the play we will join the cast with other members of RMS congregations for a brief, moderated discussion of the play. Don’t miss the fun!

CROP Walk 2013

In 1969, a thousand people in Bismarck, ND, walked in what may have been the first ever CROP Hunger Walk. That event raised $25,000 to help stop hunger. Currently, well over 2,000 communities across the U.S. join in more than 1,600 CROP Hunger Walks each year.

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world.

CROP Walk 2013 is October 20th in Lions Park in Golden. The St. Philip CROP Walker group is registered on the Church World service web-site, so you can begin donating and gathering pledges. We are hoping for a significant group of walkers and supporters for this year’s walk from our St. Philip community. To register, go to: www.crophungerwalk.org/littletonco.

COMMUNITY CARE

Come, Share your Stories! Confirmation Update

This year we are looking for people who are willing to share their personal stories with our confirmation youth on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. We have a different topic every week and we would like to have people from the congregation come and share their stories that relate to topic of the week. The first half of the year we are going over the Lord's Prayer. Please contact Pastor Brad if you are interested in participating.

On October 2nd, the topic is "Will Be Done." As Christians, we look back at some of decisions we make and realize that we chose our will over God's will. Do you have a story of a time when you chose your will over God's will in a decision you had to make? You can share about the circumstances, the results of your decision, and what you learned from the experi-ence. Was it a hard lesson to learn? How did you grow through it?

And a special thank you to Jack Dice, for sharing his story with the youth last week!
