Atypical antipsychotic medicationsthink risperidone (Risperdal). Has the same risk of tardivedyskinesia and extrapyramidal effects as other antipsychotics. Side effects include: anxiety, insomnia,

drowsiness, (yesit works both ways), dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth,

increased salivastarting to see a pattern here??, vivid dreams, urinary retention, and others.

Classifications of drugs to treat parasites:

Antihelminthicvery important to teach parents to be alert to signs of toxicity which may include

nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches, and seizures.

Pediculicides: pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide are the most commonly used medications in this

classification and are used specifically to treat lice.

The objective of pharmacological treatment for any psychiatric condition is an improvement (or a decrease) in

symptoms and movement to a higher level of functioning. A patient may rate mood or anxiety on a scale similar

to a pain scale. We should care not only about the level of anxiety or depression but also about the persons

ability to interact with others and function in society.

Remember that all medications are best absorbed on an empty stomach, but if GI distress occurs a medicationmay be taken with food. Keep in mind that if a medication is taken with food, it should always be taken with

food so that absorption is similar each time. It would not be good to take it sometimes with food and

sometimes without as absorption would be different.

Do you remember when we talked about postoperative pain control? If someone is oversedated following

surgery, it is cruel and unusual punishment to give Narcan as it reverses pain control as well as sedation. Usually

most surgical patients have benzodiazepines on board, so the kinder gentler nurse (what I hope you will be) will

always decide to reverse the benzodiazepines first by administering flumazenil (Romazicon).

    Drugs used in pregnancy:

Magnesiumnormal magnesium levels are around 2 or 1.7 to 2.2 if you want to be exact. Whentreating for pre-eclampsia, pre-term labor, or pregnancy induced hypertension, an infusion of

magnesium is given and the therapeutic level is then 4 to 6 or even a little more until symptoms are

controlled without suppressing respirations and deep tendon reflexes. Because magnesium lowers

blood pressure, if a mom is receiving ongoing magnesium infusion and an epidural block for pain control

in labormake sure you carefully monitor for hypotension!
