Functional skills are core elements of English, mathematics and ICT that provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.

Employers and educators have identified these skills as vital for enabling young people and adults to succeed in further learning, work and life in modern society.

Functional skills qualifications in English, mathematics and ICT are available at Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3, level 1 and level 2.

The skills criteria for functional skills qualifications specify assessment outcomes for qualifications at each level in terms of skill standards, coverage and range.

Each of the three skills has a set of performance standards based on three key areas. For example …

What are functional skills qualifications?

Functional skills are the skills in English, Maths and ICT which enable people to:

• Apply understanding to everyday life

• Engage competently and confidently with others

• Solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar situations

• Develop personally and professionally as positive citizens

• It is a compulsory component of the Diploma and Foundation Learning tier.

• It is going to be a key indicator for school achievement in the future

• It is built into the Maths English ICT GCSE’s but will also be examined separately.Worcester - FS Resources

Scenario 1 - Science

• The NHS are concerned with the numbers of young people smoking. Local GP’s and Ledbury Hospital have asked you, as part of the ????, to research and make information available to Y10/Y11 students on the effects of smoking on their health.

Scenario 2 - Geography

• Wyvern FM are having a climate change week to raise awareness of issues surrounding this. They have tasked you, as part your work experience placement with them, to produce a 2 minute radio news broadcast to use during this climate change week.

• Wyvern FM have provided you with data on temperature changes and CO2 levels which you need to analyse and display as a suitable graph for their website and use in your broadcast.

• Use the internet to research causes and effects of global climate change from suitable websites.

• Record a two minute radio broadcast using audacity. • Produce a logo for display on their website for this global

climate change week, that could also be used on leaflets and large (A1) posters.

The Fitness Fun Leisure Centre has good sports facilities and offers different fitness sessions. In recent months, attendance has been poor. The Fitness Fun Leisure Centre needs more publicity. As a keen member of the junior membership committee you want to help.

1. The Fitness Fun Leisure Centre needs a new logo. This should attract people to the centre. Create a logo which:

• Is eye catching and publicises the centre• Is suitable to use for all future marketing material such as posters, leaflets and

presentation.• Uses different graphical features.

2. You are going to give a presentation to a group of students of your own age to encourage them to use the facilities at the centre.

a) Create three slides that have information on them about the fitness sessions run at the centre from the file FFdata. In the presentation use the logo you have created.

b) Produce a handout with space for the audience notes next to each slide. Print the handout. This is Printout 1.
