Hypocrisy in ReligionAmos
The prophet Amos faced problems familiar to many of us. Israel was booming, its boundaries expanding, and things were looking good. Below the surface, however, greed and injustice were festering. True worship had been replaced with hypocrisy and false religion. The prophet’s unflinching warnings about sin and its effects were not popular. Amos lived up to the meaning of his name – ‘burden bearer’. But it was an important message for Israel to hear. These study notes will help us to learn from Amos’ words.

The Throne and the Temple1 & 2 Chronicles
A hundred years after the faithful remnant of Jews returned to their homeland, life is grim. They have no king and they are under the rule of Persia (now Iran). The people are well versed in the books of Kings and Samuel and look back on that time longingly.
It is at this moment that the Holy Spirit inspires the Chronicler to write a history of Israel, and from it to preach a spiritually encouraging message for these difficult times. There are parallels with the present day, although it is a materialistic power, rather than a Persian one, that has overtaken our lives. 11 weeks
Faith, Courage and PerseveranceEzra
Returning from their exile in Babylon, the people of Israel faced an uncertain future. They had experienced a miraculous release from captivity, as God moved the heart of the pagan King Cyrus to decree their return to the promised land, and to give them financial and military assistance. However, the task ahead of them was daunting and would take several generations.
Ezra is a book of encouragement, firstly for those already re-establishing the Jewish Kingdom to keep pressing on with their work, but also for the Jews still living in Babylon to join in with the restoration efforts. This lesson of how to persist through defeat and disheartenment is valuable today. 10 weeks
The Beginning of EverythingGenesis 1-11
The beginning of it all. Covering creation, the fall, the murder of Abel, the global flood, and the emerging nations, this study looks at the very first chapters of Scripture.
The events in this study still have an impact on us today, both in our personal lives and in the world. Find out more about how it all began. 10 weeks
Unshakeable ConfidenceHabakkuk & Joel
Habakkuk and Joel both faced times of national disaster and personal problems, and found their confidence in Jehovah. Would your confidence in God help you if tragedy struck your life? 9 weeks
Amazing LoveHosea
Do you ever wonder why it is hard to do what is right? Everyone of us has chosen to do things our own way, and in the book of Hosea we read how this was also true of the nation of Israel. Hosea and Jesus are two forms of the same name – ‘Saviour’.
As we read how Hosea’s tragic domestic life reflected people’s relationship with God, this study shows how the message points to one whose name was called ‘Jesus, because He will save people from their sins.’ 12 weeks
A Saviour is PromisedIsaiah 1-39
Of all the Old Testament books, few can compare with Isaiah for its lasting impact. It is probably quoted more than any other, and it has been treasured by Christians down through the ages.
This study focuses on the first half of Isaiah. Isaiah means ‘God is Salvation’ – an apt description of the message of the book. 12 weeks
Our Magnificent GodIsaiah 40–66
While the early chapters of Isaiah deal with the punishment due to God’s people in rebellion, the later chapters stress the Lord’s provision, comfort and deliverance in the coming salvation through the Messiah.
It could almost be put alongside the 27 books of the New Testament and is one of the reasons why Isaiah has been called ‘The Fifth Gospel’ – though written 800 years before Jesus Christ. 10 weeks
The Cost of ObedienceJeremiah
Obedience isn’t always seen as a particularly positive characteristic. Yet Jeremiah’s obedience to God stands out. He spent 40 years warning the people of Judah to turn back to God, prophesying accurately their fate if they stubbornly refused to change.
A lone voice, who was despised and rejected by his countrymen, Jeremiah remained faithful. His obedience was not spineless or meek, but a courageous stand for truth against the entire flow of the culture that surrounded him. Study Jeremiah and see the clear parallels to the present. 10 weeks

Triumphs over FailuresJudges
The book of Judges tells of a time of lawlessness in the history of Israel. Military leaders ruled over the Israelites and the people’s focus had turned away from God, creating disaster.
In the midst of chaos we find that repentance and loyalty to God are the only answers in times of turmoil. God is committed to his people even in extreme circumstances. 10 weeks
Messenger of LoveMalachi
God’s people are confident, over-confident in fact. They are pleased to have rebuilt the temple, but there are problems with the church: they are not behaving as they should – and God knows it.
Through Malachi, God tells his people what is wrong, and that he is coming to purify his people and re-establish his covenant in their lives. 10 weeks
Encouragement & ComfortPsalms 1 - 50
Psalms is the longest book in the Bible, with 150 chapters, You really need more than 11 weeks to do a study! This study takes a look at the first 50 Psalms.
The collection of poems found in Psalms cover a diverse range of topics. Joy, grief, repentance, anxiety, and praise are all dealt with here. With such a range of thoughts, no doubt you will be inspired. 11 weeks
The Early ChurchActs 1-12
Jerusalem: unfavourable city for a religious revival? Crucified carpenter : unsuitable head for a worldwide movement? Fishermen: improbable leaders?
You may think so, without a close look at Acts. Investigate the very start of the church as we know it; see how the lordship of Christ was clearly understood; and marvel at how from such humble beginnings, the world was turned upside down. 10 weeks
Worldwide EvangelisationActs 13-28
Watching the evening news or reading the newspaper can be a draining experience. It sometimes feels like the world is full of bad news. But Jesus’ followers had plenty of good news to tell! The gospel is the ‘good news’ of Christ.
Jesus himself gave his followers the task of spreading that ‘good news’, and we can read about their efforts in the book of Acts. There are a wide range of lessons for us to learn, and this study helpfully brings them into focus. 10 weeks
Made Completely NewColossians & Philemon
What is our priority in life? When we analyse our real focus it can be a sobering experience.
The Epistle to the Colossians is clear, Christ must be our clear priority. Those who believe in him are rooted in him, alive in him, hidden in him and complete in him – it would be utterly inconsistent for them to live life without him. Learn how the life of a Christian requires a completely new perspective, with Christ at the core, not our own selfish desires. 10 weeks
Message for TodayMark
Do you have a good picture of the life and work of Jesus Christ? Who was Jesus and why did he come? Of the four Gospel writers, it is young Mark who puts most emphasis on what Jesus did.
This study will help you gain a fuller picture of what Jesus should mean to you. 10 weeks
People & Problems in the Church1 Corinthians
First Corinthians is a real letter written by a real person to real people about real problems very similar to those we face today.
This study gives the teaching of Paul on matters relating to the church as the body of Christ. It is linked throughout with our lives as Christians today. 10 weeks

Controlled by Love2 Corinthians
Helping the church get back on track, part 2! After sending the first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul has sent Timothy (and later Titus) to help sort out their problems. He even paid an emergency visit himself.
Just as Paul was about to despair of getting the church to accept his answers, Titus arrived back with the news that the Corinthians had repented and were now back on track.
This second letter was sent ahead of a final meeting with Paul, to tie up loose ends and encourage better leadership in the church. It provides us too with a better model to follow, to make sure that we don’t go off the rails! 10 weeks
Heavenly LivingEphesians
Around 60AD while imprisoned, Paul dictates to his faithful companion, Tychicus, what has become one of the most loved of Paul’s epistles to the Christian church. Tychicus was to travel to Ephesus with it, and also deliver another letter to Colossae.
The Ephesian letter is then thought to have been circulated around other churches. Why? Probably because, in it Paul comes closest to explaining a complete picture of Christianity and how it links with Judaism. 10 weeks
Born to be FreeGalatians
Paul is bewildered by the spiritual decline of the Galatians, and so sets out to defend the Gospel he delivered to Galatia, bringing them back into line with the rest of the Church.
He also tells them (and us) of the relationship between ‘the law’, faith and Christian liberty. These are still the arguments we have today! Legalism and licence are still two extremes we need help with. The Galatians letter provides that help. 10 weeks
Entering by FaithHebrews
In the first century AD many people became Christians, rejoiced in their newfound faith, but then became bogged down with ritual, doubt or peer-pressure. (Sounds kind of familiar, doesn’t it!) Hebrews provides answers for all of these problems and points us in the right direction for spiritual growth.
Hebrews is really all about Jesus. God shows us that the best things He has provided for us, both in time and in eternity, are through Christ. 10 weeks
Faith that WorksJames
Do you want to know how to grow, how to be really wise, how to bear fruit, how to deal with riches, and how to apply spiritual principles?
The letter from James has much to say, and this study is the ideal guide to it. Comparing what James wrote with other Scriptures, you will dig out the truths in such a way that they will become part of your daily life. 10 weeks
Walking in Love1, 2 & 3 John
In today’s world, if there is one characteristic that seems to be ever more fashionable it is scepticism. The idea of ultimate truth is treated with suspicion, and those who have certainty are considered a threat.
If we look at the Bible, however, we can see that we need to be sceptical of such scepticism! The epistles of John are counter-cultural. They maintain that there are things we can be absolutely sure about. We can be sure about the love of God, about his redeeming work and that we can know Him personally.
These precious letters have so much to offer the 21st century Christian. Let this study help you towards what will be a reinvigorating experience. 12 weeks
Jesus Christ: Who is He?John
John’s Gospel has brought many thousands of people to a saving knowledge of Christ. It was written ‘so that through your faith in Him you may have life’ (John 20:31).
This study will deepen your faith and help you to get a grasp of the whole book. 10 weeks
The World’s Only HopeLuke
In many ways Luke’s Gospel is the ideal Gospel for today. In today’s sceptical world the opening paragraphs hit home. Written by a well-educated Gentile, Luke starts by explaining how, using first-hand reports, he sought to record the facts of the life of Christ in an orderly and unbiased manner, so that the readers could know with certainty what happened.
Covering the length of the Gospel of Luke, this study looks at a period that really did turn the world upside-down. The knowledge that is found within Luke can utterly transform our lives too. 12 weeks

Glimpses of the KingMatthew
Why are there four Gospels? Wouldn’t it have been better to have one complete biography of Jesus? Interesting questions! Perhaps the answer could be summed up by saying that each of the four Gospel writers wrote to bring out a different theme.
Matthew, a Jew, shows us Jesus as King, the One who fulfilled the Jewish prophecies in the Old Testament. Giving our lives to Jesus involves more than just words. We need to submit to his authority, which we may find hard to do. Matthew has much to teach us, and this study helps us bring these lessons into sharp – and often uncomfortable – focus. 11 weeks
The Drama of RevelationRevelation
Revelation is a mysterious and intriguing book. It talks about a slain lamb, which is also a lion, seven angels blowing trumpets and pouring out pestilence on the Earth, dragons, horsemen and grotesque beasts.
We are not to be distracted, though, from the central theme – that all in Heaven and Earth will be worshipping and singing praises to the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb who has triumphed over evil. You, too, can look into the future that awaits us. 10 weeks
The Only Way to Be GoodRomans
‘I’ve lived a good life, been nice to people, not done anything really bad, I’ll be alright.’ It is only natural for us to judge our life according to our own rules. As we try to examine ourselves we take on board all the mitigating circumstances we can think of – because, after all, we meant well, didn’t we? We ignore all the incriminating evidence as it is just too uncomfortable to think about. Where do we end up? All in all, we’re not that bad really. Right?
Wrong! The Judge we are to face will be perfectly just and will not be distracted by irrelevant excuses. Not only that, but it’s not our rules that we will be judged against – it is the perfect rules of a judge who demands nothing less than perfection. How can we possibly be good, when nothing less than perfection will do?
Paul’s letter to the Romans will give you the answer. 10 weeks
Get Ready1 & 2 Thessalonians
Paul’s first and second letters to the Thessalonians have much to teach us today.
We are reminded to persevere through the suffering we will face in this fallen world. We are warned not to be misled by speculation about his coming return. But most of all we are reminded that we must live for Christ and be ready for his return. Are you ready? 9 weeks
Building Godly Relationships
Relationships: family, friends, work. Some make life worthwhile: others break our hearts! You can’t always change others – but you can change yourself. If you want richer relationships, then start by considering what these Bible passages about relationships say.
Because this study series is concise, it cannot cover everything – but the more you put into practise, the more help you will get. 10 weeks
Discovering God’s Glory
What is God’s glory? It is infinite, it is his honour, his goodness, his power, his authority, his capacity, his character, his beauty.
As you work through these studies you will find even more than this, as you consider how each of these facets of God’s glory has been manifested, either in Bible history, in secular history, or in our experience today. 11 weeks
Finding Christ in the Old TestamentA real eye-opener!
We can all see the point of the New Testament, it tells the story of God becoming man, paying the penalty for our sins and establishing his church here on earth – but the New Testament is less than half the Bible, what about the Old Testament? How does it relate to the arrival of Christ?
The story of God’s rescue plan for mankind does not start in the New Testament. Christ is in the Old Testament too – this study will show you where. Helpful notes bring the significance of these chapters into focus, and speak clearly to us today. 12 weeks
Finding Life’s Purpose through Discipleship
We often consider the last words of a person to be of great importance. Jesus’ last words to his disciples are to be found in the book of Acts, chapter 1, verse 8.
He tells his disciples that they would be filled with the Holy Spirit and receive power to be his witnesses in Jerusalem (the city they were staying in at the time), Judea (the surrounding area), Samaria (further afield) and to the remotest parts of the Earth. This was to be their mission – and today that is our mission, but how do we carry it out? 11 weeks

Focus on Faith10 Old Testament characters
The Old Testament can seem distant and remote and is, understandably, often not the first port of call for Christians wanting to grow in faith. However, if we confine our study to the New Testament alone then we are missing out; the Old Testament has incredible stories and characters who remain well-known even in today’s secular society.
This study shows us how much we can learn from characters. Some, such as Noah and Gideon, are well recognised, others, like Caleb and Hezekiah, less so – but are no less relevant. Ranging from a single mother (Hagar), through a spy (Caleb), to a king (Hezekiah), these characters and the lessons we learn from them are nothing if not varied. 10 weeks
Freedom – You Can Find It!
Why are birds free in the air, fish free in water? Because they are in their natural elements. Human beings are only free to really live when we are in our proper element. Find out what that is, and how you can find true freedom.
This study explores different parts of the Bible which illustrate freedom through obedience, freedom from bondage, freedom despite circumstances, and freedom from fear and more. 10 weeks
God’s Heart – My Heartwhat the Bible says about world mission
One of the chief responsibilities of Christians is to reach out to others with the truth of what God has done. Ever since the days of the apostles, Christians have had a vision to reach out to the world.
What does the Bible say about mission? What can we learn from the examples of the early Christians? More importantly, where do we fit in?
10 weeks
Redemptionfreely forgiven
Redemption is one of those words Christians tend to use a lot, but can sometimes have a bit of a fuzzy idea what it actually means. The concept of redemption is central to the Christian faith. To redeem is to ‘buy back’ – the price must be paid for our mistakes.
On the cross, Christ bore the penalty for all our sins, so that those who trust in Him may once more have a relationship with God. Christ was the means of redemption for us. Study this life-changing truth, see what God has done for us, and give thanks! 10 weeks
Saints in Service11 New Testament characters
Meet some people from the New Testament that you can really identify with! We are often in awe about these characters but here you will discover that they had flaws and strengths just like you or me.
Learn from the lives of Elizabeth, Mary (mother of Jesus), Anna, Martha, Mary Magdalene, Barnabas, Mark, Timothy, Aquila, Priscilla, Epaphras, Philip and Stephen.
This booklet is a series of lively and informative studies that you will remember for their impact on your life. 11 weeks
The Problems of Life! Is There an Answer?
We live in troubled times, in a world of broken-hearted and disillusioned people. Many can only suppress the emptiness of the ‘spirit of the age’ by partying and spending hard – hoping that the meaninglessness of it all will be put to the back of their mind for a little while longer.
Christians, too, meet with difficulties – but Christians have answers. This booklet introduces you to the real problems people face each day (anger, bitterness, problem relationships, worry, temptation, fear, bereavement, depression, discouragement) and highlights Biblical solutions to deal with them. 9 weeks
To Give You a Future and a Hope
God-breathed, inspired, unique – the Bible is a collection of 66 books which all contain revelation from God. As we delve into these books, we see recurring themes from beginning to end and learn of God’s plans for us – plans to give us a hope and a future. This study explores the meaning of biblical hope, and why we can trust in God’s unchanging nature and character. It is a good place to begin on your discovery of God’s word. 11 weeks

AbrahamGenesis 12 - 25
Abraham’s life makes amazing reading. His faith in God is inspiring even today. He was by no means perfect, but his failings help us to see a man of God not as a remote and distant figure, but a fallible human, like the rest of us except one with great faith.
Abraham walked closely with God, his humility and trust in God brought him through many awkward situations and we can take offer us many useful lessons. 10 weeks
Highly EsteemedDaniel
Daniel in the lion’s den is one of the most famous Bible stories. Other than that, our memory of what else he did tends to fade away.
This study reminds us that the lion’s den story was just one part of his fascinating life. It puts his life into context and shows what we can learn from a life led in complete reliance on a God who is in control of all things. 12 weeks
A Man After God’s Own HeartDavid
David: the boy who killed Goliath, King of Israel, Psalm writer … but there is more to David than that. He was an adulterer, a king who plotted the death of a faithful soldier, so that he could satisfy his own lusts on his subject’s wife.
Like us all, he had times of doubt and fear, but God used him mightily to provide a lesson, to Israel then and to us today. Study David ’s dramatic life – with more twists and turns than any adventure novel. 11 weeks
Men of CourageElijah & Elisha
Elijah must be one of the greatest ‘greats’ in the Old Testament. His name means ‘My God is Jehovah’ so, although we have no record of his ancestors, we can presume that he had godly parents!
Elisha’s name means ‘My God is My Saviour’. Could these two key figures in the Old Testament have more appropriate names? We learn from their lives that faithful believers can make a difference. 11 weeks
The Man God ChoseJacob
Jacob was not the brother you wish you had. His life from the beginning was one of twisting the truth and plotting behind people’s backs. Yet he became one of the major characters in the heritage of God’s people.
If God could choose this man for his purposes, could he choose you? How far did God use Jacob? Well, he even got to wrestle with the Son! 12 weeks
God CaresJonah
Jonah was a great man of faith. God trusted him with delivering his message to people outside the realms of his own nation. But Jonah wanted to make sure that God’s people remained a close-knit group. He didn’t want God’s blessings being transferred away from his people.
He thought he knew better ; Jonah learned the hard way! Don’t make the same mistakes! 8 weeks
God Plans for GoodJoseph
Joseph was faced with many tests from God, the test of adversity, the test of the body, the test of the soul, the test of prosperity, and the test of the inner man. God tests us too.
As you study the life of Joseph, you will learn how God wants you to act when you have a problem. Can you look at your disappointments and suffering, and honestly say, ‘God planned it for good’? 10 weeks

Do you feel that your responsibilities just now are more than you can cope with? Joshua did!
Do you ever wonder if the promises in the Bible really relate to you? Joshua did!
This study looks at the story of God’s dealings with his people, presented in a nutshell in Joshua 24:5-13. You will see that God always takes the initiative. 12 weeks

Moses – the baby in the basket, the burning bush, the plagues of Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, the ‘manna’ from heaven, the 40 years in the wilderness, the 10 commandments.
By any standards Moses’ life was an interesting one. He led his people from slavery in Egypt to the promised land – facing famine, hostile tribes, a rebellion and doubt from his own people along the way. If ever there was a life that is worth studying, then this one is it. 10 weeks
Achieving the ImpossibleNehemiah
What did Nehemiah do when he had a problem? When you find this out, you will learn what to do with your problems too. This study shows what to do when the enemy attacks, how to replace disunity with fellowship, and what Bible study was like in the year 445 BC.
It not only highlights Nehemiah’s thrilling work of building a city, but lets us peep into Scriptures that show God at work preparing His city. Be victorious in your Christian life! 10 weeks
Grace and Grit Ruth & Esther
The story of Ruth is one that shows how incredibly the grace of God works in bringing one of his people into the fold of believers. The likelihood of this happy result in Ruth’s life would be one that bookmakers would hesitate to quote odds on! We can take heart from how she sees God’s providence working through our lives too. Esther’s story, however, is very different.
Queen Esther already knew her Creator but was faced with a difficult situation. In the face of persecution, she knew she couldn’t keep silent but must speak out against injustice. Her guile and courage were an example to her people, and an example to us today. 10 weeks
