Read Across America
The media center will continue with Read Across America
program.
The NEA is building a nation of readers through its
signature program.
This program motives children and teens to read through
events, partnerships, and reading resources.
This program will also be used to promote technology.
Read Across America
Read across America is the perfect time to extend invitations to hat wearers in your community.
Firefighters, police officers, construction workers, members of the military, park rangers, and more can talk about the hats they wear on the job and read aloud titles related to their work.
After reading to the class, students will be allowed to ask questions about their job/career.
Olympic Reading Contest
The Reading Olympics competition is the culmination of the program that has teams of students reading books from a prepared list for several months prior to the final event.
The goal is to increase the quality and quantity of books
students read for enjoyment.
The book lists are prepared the previous year by interested teachers and librarians.
Olympic Reading Contest
The Olympics are primarily a celebration of reading rather
than a contest.
All participants are awarded ribbons.
Since the teams generate much excitement about this
reading event, the experience is rewarding for everyone
involved.
Book Character Parade
Students will come to school dressed in their favorite book character costume
and bring their book.
Students can choose their character from a novel or picture book.
Teachers are encouraged to allow students to share their book by an oral or written
report that day.
Teachers may have chosen a theme/format for his/her individual class.
There will be a designated Parade Route that the classes will follow.
Classes will parade starting with the lower grades first.
Book Character Parade
Judging will take place after the parade.
Winners of the parade are allowed to share a book talk or facts about his/her book.

Door Decorating Contest Certificate!
Hats off to Reading
Crazy hats aren’t just for students.
For a class that meets a reading goal, reward them with the chance to make a crazy hat for their teacher or special guest.
You can also set up a bigger goal so that the class that reads the most get to make or choose a crazy hat for the principal.
Hats off to Reading
Sports teams, movies, and branded products all get advertised on hats-why not books?
Students get creative by assembling a hat that promotes their favorite story.
They might reproduce a scene from their book in miniature on the bill of a ball cap or fashion a paper crown with each point decorated with characters from the book.
