Sahitya Akademi organized a ‘Through My Window’ programme featuring eminent Hindi writer and poet, Sri Ramesh Chandra Shah on May 7, 2015 at the Akademi conference hall in New Delhi. Sri

Ramesh Chandra Shah spoke about the life and works of distinguished Hindi poet, critic and writer, Sri ‘Ajneya’ SachchidanandaHiranandaVatsyayan. Sri Shah talked about the early life of Sri Ajneya and highlighted the fact that Ajneya was the most traveled writer of his time and observed that it is this wide experience gave Ajneya edge over his fellow poets and writers. Sri Shah talked about the formation of Shekhar: EkJivani, a novel trilogy and also about Ajneya’s inspirational poetry spanning several decades. Sri Shah also talked about Ajneya’s pioneering efforts in varied genres of poetry, fiction, criticism in the emerging trends of modern Hindi literature. Sri Shah also talked about prolific contribution of Ajneya to journalism and about his teaching stints in Europe and America during the later stages of his life. Sri Shah also interspersed his lecture with interesting anecdotes involving Ajneya. A brief interactive session followed the lecture. The event was well attended by several well-known writers and poets from Delhi.

Sahitya Akademi organized a literary forum featuring poetry recitation and readings by eminent Indian English poet, Dr. Ashwani Kumar on May 19, 2015. Prof K. Satchidanandan, eminent English and Malayalam poet and critic, chaired the forum. He introduced Dr. Ashwani Kumar to the audience and talked briefly about the sensibility and sensitive portrayals in Dr. Ashwani Kumar’s poems. Dr. Ashwani Kumar, eminent academician and poet, thanked the Akademi for the opportunity and read out poems

from his latest work, My Grandfather’s Imaginary Typewriter and also briefly outlined the formation of important poems in the collection.

hindi – dogri PoeTryTransLaTion WorkshoP

May 25-28, 2015, Patnitop

Sahitya Akademi organized a Hindi-Dogri poetry translation workshop between May 25 and May 28, 2015 in Patnitop, Jammu and Kashmir. For the workshop, ‘Anthology of Modern Indian Poetry in Hindi: 1950-2010’ was selected and selections were translated. Prof LalitMagotra, Convener, Dogri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, was the director of the workshop while Prof Veena Gupta and Prof Shashi Pataniya were the experts and resource persons. Six noted translators, Sri Nirmal Vinod, Smt. PromilaManhas, Sri Prakash Premi, Sri Gnaneshwar, Sri SushilBegana and Sri Ashok Ambar, participated in the workshop.

On the last day of the workshop, the Director and the experts evaluated the translations and summed up the positives and negatives of each translation. All the translators talked about their experience, challenges and positives of the workshop. Prof Magotra talked about the value of workshops of this kind. Dr. Devendra Kumar Devesh, Officer on Special Duty, Sahitya Akademi, who coordinated the workshop thanked the experts and participants. He informed everyone that translated poems will be brought out as a volume soon by Sahitya Akademi.

MuLTiLinguaL PoeTs’ MeeTMay 26, 2015, new delhi

Sahitya Akademi organized a multilingual poets’ meet on May 26, 2015 at the Akademi conference hall in New Delhi. Well-known poets, Sri Aziz Hajini, Sri LalityaLait, Sri Zubairul Hasan Gafil and Dr Shankar Dev Jha participated in the meet and recited their poems in Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu and Maithili, respectively along with Hindi / English translations. A brief interactive session followed the recitations. Well-known poets and critics from Delhi attended the meet. Dr. Devendra Kumar Devesh, Officer on Special Duty, coordinated the meet.

Sahitya Akademi launched, at a glittering ceremony, a trilingual anthology of distinguished Spanish writer Cesar Vallejo’s writings titled ‘Cesar Vallejo: Obra Escogida’ on June 1, 2015 in New Delhi. The anthology contains selected Cesar Vallejo’s writings in Spanish, Hindi and Bengali languages. H.E. Mr. JaiverPaulinich, Hon’ble Ambassador of Peru in India released the anthology.

A session of workshop in progress


Dr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, welcomed the ambassador, other dignitaries, the editor and translators of the volume, writers and scholars who participated in the event and media personalities. He thanked the editor and the ambassador for their help in bringing out this unique anthology. He observed that the anthology is a necessity of time as unlike Neruda and other Latin American writers, Cesar Vallejo is relatively unknown in India though he was also equally a great writer.

H.E. Mr. JaiverPaulinich discussed the décor, cultural heritage and sentiments of both the nations and said that the readers of Hindi and Bengali languages can now read and enjoy the poems of Cesar Vallejo in their own mother tongues. He thanked Sahitya Akademi and its Secretary for making this possible. He also praised the translations and editorship of the anthology. He hoped in the future Akademi will bring out more such anthologies of Peruvian literary legends.

Prof Shyama Prasad Ganguly, editor of the anthology, Smt. PrabatiNautiyal, Smt. MeenakshiSundriyal and Sri Ashesh Roy, translators of Vallejo’s poems also spoke on the occasion.

Many eminent writers and scholars from Delhi such as Sri Purushottam Agarwal, Sri SurehRutuparna, Sri Vijay Shankar, Prof H.S. Shivaprakash and Sri MangleshDabral among others participated in the programme.

Sahitya Akademi organized All India Poets’ Meet on June 8, 2015 at the Jawharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy auditorium in Imphal.

In the inaugural session, Dr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, welcomed the participants, dignitaries, audience and media personnel and talked at length about the Akademi’s initiatives to bring together poets from various traditions spread across India and spanning 24 main languages and numerous minor languages and dialects. in the literary history of Manipur and highlighted Akademi’s efforts in promoting North Eastern literature in general and Manipuri literature in particular. He observed that through these efforts the Akademi is bringing together diverse traditions and

contributing in its own way to national integration. The meet was inaugurated by Dr. Arjun Dev Charan, Convener, Rajasthani Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, who is also a noted Rajasthani poet, critic, playwright and translator. To mark the beginning of the poets’ meet, Dr. Arjun Dev Charn recited five poems focusing on children, women and rain. Sri Pramod Kumar Jain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India was the Guest of Honour and he spoke about the necessity to promote poetry in view of rapidly vanishing value systems across the world and highlighted the importance of preserving poetry contained in oral traditions as well and not merely written poetry. Prof H. Behari Singh, Convener, Manipuri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, in his keynote address, talked about the primacy of poetry as creative expression and observed that poetry is the first form of literature in the world. He also talked about the importance of poets’ meets and the role they play in uniting the cultures and traditions, especially in a diverse country like India. He also observed that poets’ meets also help the poets to grow and evolve, learn from the poets hailing from other and remote traditions.

Towards the end of inaugural session, five noted poets, Sri Pranay Phukan (Assamese), Sri Dileep Jhaveri (Gujarati), Sri K.G. Shankara Pillai (Malayalam), Sri N. Bidyasagar Singha (Manipuri) and Smt Shaista Yusuf (Urdu) recited their compositions.

In the first session that was chaired by Prof N. Khagendra Singh, four noted poets, Smt Tarini Shubhadayini (Kannada), Sri Ramesh Veluskar (Konkani), Sri S Lanchenba Meetei (Manipuri) and Sri Rajuram Bijarniyan (Rajasthani) recited their compositions.

In the second session that was chaired by Sri LeeladharMandloi, seven noted poets, Sri Subhro Bandopadhyay (Bengali), Smt Aleendra Brahma (Bodo), Sri K Radhakumar Singh (Manipuri), Sri Ram Shah (Nepali), Sri Manas Ranjan Mahapatra (Odia), Sri P.C. Muraleemadhavan (Sanskrit) and Smt Era Meenakshi (Tamil) recited their compositions. Sri Goutam Paul, Officer-in-charge, Sahitya Akademi Eastern Region, coordinated the meet and proposed vote of thanks.

Sahitya Akademi inaugurated, at a glittering ceremony, its North East Centre for Oral Literature (NECOL) at Manipur University, Indo-Myanmar Road, Imphal on June 8, 2015.

Dr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, welcomed the dignitaries, scholars and writers and media personalities and talked about the aims and objectives of the center. He highlighted certain salient features of the Center’s functioning such as collection, preservation and publication of oral literature from North East, organizing folk festivals, literary forums, seminars, symposia and workshops in North East among other activities. He informed that the center also commissions translations of oral literature of North East into other Indian languages. Dr. Sreenivasarao observed that NECOl has always been a platform for constant interaction and dialogue of North East with other parts of India and requested the scholars and writers of Manipur to come forward and help Sahitya Akademi in this endeavor.The North East Centre for Oral Literature (NECOL) was formally inaugurated by Prof H. NandakumarSarma, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University. In his inaugural address, Prof Sarma expressed happiness and gratitude that the Government of India and Sahitya Akademi are taking a number of steps to ensure preservation and flourishing of languages, literature and linguistic and literary traditions of North Eastern India. He assured Sahitya Akademi that the University of Manipur will do all it can for the success of the Center. He observed that the Center will promote the non-scheduled languages of the North Eastern India through various schemes and projects. Prof H. Behari Singh, Convener, Manipuri Advisory Board, was the Guest of Honor at the inauguration and he spoke briefly about the history of North East Centre for Oral Literature (NECOL) through various phases in Guwahati, Shillong and Agartala. He appealed to the scholars and writers of Manipur to utilize the center and excel like how some scheduled tribes of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam, Tripura took advantage of the schemes and projects of North East Centre for Oral Literature (NECOL) in the past. He hoped that the Manipur, which has a minimum of 34 schedule tribes struggling desperately to define their identity, socially, politically and culturally, would certainly get the benefits for the development of their oral literatures and also contribute immensely for the cause of preservation and promotion of tribal and oral literature of North East. He highlighted that oral literature is inseparable from literature of any community of people. Eminent poet and playwright and convener of Rajasthani Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, Dr. Arjun Dev Charan and Dr. Gourhari Das, Convener, Odia Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, also participated in the inauguration. Both stressed on the importance of preservation and publication of oral traditions and oral literature as it is oral traditions that bear the pulse and life of the dynamic traditions of the soil, in all the nations. They highlighted how oral literature enriches the mainstream written literature by adding a vast range of possibilities and imagination to a given work. Both of them also talked about how the Center has always been enriching Indian literature in many ways and also how the center acted as a bridge between North East and rest of India.

To commemorate International Yoga Day, Sahitya Akademi organized a Yoga session at the Akademi office premises in New Delhi on June 21, 2015. Prof AlkaTyagi well-known poet and Yoga expert conducted the proceedings. Dr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, introduced Prof AlkaTyagi to the staff and briefly talked about International Yoga Day. Prof Tyagi talked about Yoga, its purpose, various techniques of doing Yoga and its benefits to humanity. She demonstrated various types of meditative procedures for improved concentration and also several asanas for healthy living. Sahitya Akademi employees from the Head Quarters of Sahitya Akademi and Sales Office also participated in the programme.

Sahitya Akademi organized a literary forum programme featuring multilingual story reading session by three noted fiction writers, Sri JitendranathMurmu (Santali), Sri Gowrinath (Maithili) and Sri PrabhathRanjan (Hindi) on June 23, 2015 at the Akademi conference hall in New Delhi. Sri Gowrinath read out his Maithili story, ‘Asothkit,’ Sri Murmu read out his Santali story, ‘Muaavaja’ and Sri PrabhathRanjan read out his Hindi story ‘Bolero Class’ during the forum. All the stories betrayed the appalling conditions of the poor and oppressed classes in abundance. Dr. Devendra Kumar Devesh, Officer on Special Duty, Sahitya Akademi, coordinated the forum. Many eminent fiction writers and critics from in and around Delhi attended the forum.

Sahitya Akademi launched two volumes of ‘20th Century Women Writings in Hindi – Volumes II & III’ at a glittering ceremony on June 29, 2015 at Sahitya Akademi auditorium in New Delhi.

Eminent writer Smt. ChitraMudgal was the Chief Guest of the event and Dr. Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi, presided over the function.

The volumes featuring women writings in Hindi over the past 100 years were edited by renowned writers and editors, Dr. Anamika and Dr. MamtaKalia. In their editorial statements they observed that though poems were written by these women were in different eras, in different places and dealing with different emotions through ten decades, they all focus on women issues, sufferings and travails of women, both rural and cosmopolitan, and women liberation. They observed that these writings cannot be judged from the present era where women have started getting their dues and spaces to express themselves. Both of them highlighted the challenges and difficulties in compiling and editing these volumes.

Smt. ChitraMudgal, in her address said that this work will be regarded as Akademi’s one of the most useful and meaningful publications. She appreciated both the volumes and said that both the books have proven to be milestones in Akademi’s publications.

Dr. Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi, recalled the words of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita praising women and their capabilities. He observed that no nation can call itself progressive unless women of the nation are encouraged and promoted. He praised the hard work of the editors and astute editing of the volumes and informed that in the forthcoming editions more new selections will be added.

Many eminent writers and scholars such as Archana Sharma, Chandrakanta, VipinChoudhri, Ramanika Gupta, K.G. Varma, RavindraKalia, Suresh Shankarshan, Madan Kashyap, J.L. Dr. Chinnaswamy talked about the qualities of his writings and traced the absence of anger and anguish against people, communities and social institutions to him being not branded as Dalit writer. Three noted scholars and little magazine editors, Sri ‘Kavya’ Shanmugasundaram, Sri Azhagiyasingar and Sri Aravindan participated in the forum. Sri ‘Kavya’ Shanmugasundaram presented a historical perspective of little magazines in Tamil and talked about varied contributions of such magazines to the enrichment of modern Tamil literature. He

highlighted the absence of major sponsors as one of the main reasons for the fading away of little magazines not only in Tamil literature but all over India. Sri Azhagiyasingar presented a perspective of the publisher who is successfully running a little magazine [NaveenaVirutcham] for over 25 years but accepted little magazines in Tamil did not pack a punch as happened in other languages. In the forum prominent children literature writers discussed several facets of the genre. In the inaugural session, Dr. Gourhari Das, Convener, Odia Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, welcomed the participants and audience and spoke briefly about various initiatives of the Akademi to promote children’s literature

across India in 24 languages. Dr. Das Benhur chaired the inaugural session and expressed gratitude to the Akademi for organizing and promoting events related to children’s literature across the country. Eminent writer Sri Santanu Kumar Acharya was the Chief Guest of the forum and he talked about the necessity of elders to inculcate good reading habits in children and highlighted the adaptable nature of children’s minds and how elders should utilize that trait of children to produce society of good people.

In the first session, two noted scholars, Dr. Sanghamitra Mishra and Sri Sarat Kumar Biswal, presented their papers, ‘The role of folk tale and folk song in children’s literature’ and ‘Education and Children’s Literature’ respectively. In the second session, three noted scholars, Smt. Dr. Gourhari Das, Convener, Odia Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, introduced Sri Sabyasachi Mohapatra and briefly talked about the contributions of Sri Mohapatra. Sri Sabyasachi Mohapatra thanked the Akademi and talked about the books that played a vital role in his life. He recalled how his late father who was a school teacher instilled the habit of reading in him. He cited the writings of Fakir Mohan Senapati, Gopinath Mohanty and Pranabandhu Kar as the ones that motivated him most. He also pointed out that the stories of Manguli Charan Biswal and his father Kapileswar Prasad Mohapatra as the ones which inspired him in difficult circumstances. Sri Sabyasachi Mohapatra then talked about how different writers and works different people and observed that it is wrong to tie oneself to cocoon. His film ‘Aadim Vichar,’ an adaptation of Sri Kapileswar Prasad Mohapatra’s story and a vivid portrayal of the struggles of the old and aged, was also screened on the occasion.

The regional office of Sahitya Akademi at Mumbai, in association with the Ram Panjwani Literary and Cultural Centre, organized a ‘Meet the Author’ programme with the eminent Sindhi poet and writer, Sri Vasudev Nirmal on May 16, 2015 at Seeta Sindhu Bhavan in Mumbai.

After the welcome speech, Sri Vasudev Nirmal thanked the Akademi for providing the opportunity and talked about his life and works and also about the process of creative writing. Ms. Shobha Lalchandani read out his writings. He observed that though he was an Engineer by profession his thirst for beauty, elegance and symmetry propelled him towards poetry and he

took it as a cause to contribute and popularize Sindhi literature, one of the most significant literary traditions of modern India. Dr Goklani summed up Sri Sunder Agnani’s artistic career saying that Sri Agnani was not only a writer but also a painter, playwright, director, editor, cartoonist and an administrator. She stated that Sri Agnani developed his own aesthetics as an artist which resonated through his writings and staging the plays. The regional office of Sahitya Akademi at Mumbai, in collaboration with the Marathwada Sahitya Parishad, organized a Kavisandhi featuring noted Marathi poet, Ms. Aruna Dhere on June 12, 2015 at Aurangabad. A five-day Book exhibition was also organized between June 12 and June 16, 2015. The exhibition was inaugurated by Smt. Anuradha Patil, distinguished Marathi poet and she talked about books, the habit of reading good, quality books and the cultural enrichment it brings along. While welcoming the guest poet – Ms Aruna Dhere, Sri Krishna Kimbahune, Regional Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, informed that Dhere’s oeuvre includes six collections of poems – Pramambh, Yakshratra, Mantrakshat, Niranjan, Jaave Janmakade and Nilya Paradarshak Andharat, five collections of short stories, three novellas, four books of criticism and fourteen books of non-fiction. He added that Ms Dhere has received a number of state level awards for her contribution to Marathi poetry. Ms Dhere shared that poetry by Marathi saints deeply influenced her. She also said that she was brought up in literary atmosphere, and from her teenage she had developed a strong bond with literature by women, their patience and suffering. Obviously her growing understanding of the life of the women contributed to her writing in general and to her poetry in particular.

She recited her poems – ‘Mendhapalacha Gana’, ‘Babhalichi Phule’, ‘Ghai Kara Bai’, ‘Sartya Unhaat Bai Dalan Ghalati’, ‘Ayushyat Nustyach Aikat Rahatat Bayaka’, ‘Devi’, ‘Jani Mhane Vitthala’ and ‘Satshe Varshancha Vitthula’. Further she said that in understanding culture and strong literary traditions poetry proves to be the only medium without any alternative.

The regional office of Sahitya Akademi at Mumbai organized a set of two programmes, ‘Kathasandhi’ and ‘Kavisandhi’ with noted Konkani fiction writer, Smt. Meena Kakodkar and Smt. Maya Kharangate, well-known Konkani poetess, respectively on June 27, 2015 at the Akademi auditorium in Mumbai.

Welcoming both the Konkani guest-writers and audience, Sri Krishna Kimbahune, Regional Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, highlighted the Konkani programmes that the Akademi organized in Mumbai.

He recalled the programmes like Meet the Author with Sri Nagesh Sonde, two Literary Forums in collaboration with the Saraswat Mahila Samaj and Kanara Saraswat Association, a symposium on the late Dinkar Desai, noted Konkani poet. He also informed that a book of Dinkar Desai’s poems would be reprinted soon by the Akademi under its Reprint of Rare Books series. Sri Kimbahune introduced Smt. Meena Kakodkar as fiction writer and translator who had her literary journey of almost 50 years, and had won the Sahitya Akademi Award for her fiction

writing. He pointed out that Kakodkar shouldered the responsibility of writing for children as well.

Smt. Meena Kakodkar thanked Sahitya Akademi for inviting her to Kathasandhi and said that she had been associated with the Akademi in one way or another for a long time.She read out her short story named “Sheen”, the story that was included in her collection titled Aami. She also read out an excerpt from her widely acclaimed novel Vaastu. In her interaction with the audience, she talked about the influences on her writings and learning and pointed out her school teacher Sri Kerkar as a singular influence.

At the Kavisandhi, Sri Krishna Kimbahune welcomed Smt. Maya Kharangate, pointing it out that besides poetry, Maya wrote passionately for children also, and won the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Award. He also informed that the group of three significant contemporary woman-poets called “Triveni” included Maya Kharangate. Smt. helped her to develop linguistic abilities and insight into the literature that illuminated the inner being of the readers. She observed that the ordinary people around, several types of women and their suffering inspired her poetry. Rhythm of Goan folk music, the folk songs that dealt with contemporary social issues and some of her fellow-poets influenced her poetry. The poems she rendered at the Kavisandhi were – “Darya Asach Gastalo”, “Hanv Shaata Hanv Durga”, “Te Zaad Kalkhache”, “Rama, Paus Shenalo”, “Hampi”, “Sanj Ashee Zirmiri”, “Asture, Tu Ashee Kashee?”, “Krishna”, and “Kuru Kuru Kana”.Sri Krishna Kimbahune proposed a vote of thanks.

He read two of his short stories “Nandho Dukh ain Vaddo Dukh” and “Khaunf,” both based on his personal experiences – one related to a quarrel in the family and the other to a fear the oceans can create in some people.
