$328 went to the Annual March for Life this past weekend. Project Rachel will be this weekend’s parish sharing recipient.

In the past the St. Charles Social Ministry Group worked on a committee with people from a number of other Greece churches to fund and build a house in the city of Rochester as part of Habitat for Humanity. Since that time various coalitions of Greece churches have continued to build for Habitat. While St. Charles has not joined any of the succeeding groups, we have at times contributed funds to their efforts. The coalition (more than churches) recently completed a house. We will dedicate next weekend's tithing (2.5%) to the next building effort of the Greece Coalition for Habitat for Humanity.

NOTE: $440 went to the St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality the weekend of January 3, 2016.

Catholic Courier for St. Charles The Catholic Courier that you receive is sent by the Diocese to all registered households. The Diocese in turn charges each parish for this paper. This year, the cost to St. Charles is estimated to be over $23,000. Each January, we include an extra envelope for your donations toward this expense. Envelopes are available at the entrances to church for those who do not receive envelope packets or may have misplaced the envelope they received.

From last time...

Q. Why do the Orthodox Christians and some Eastern

Rite Catholics celebrate Christmas and Epiphany

later than we do?

A. The Catechism tells us very little about Christmas,

and nothing about date of the Solemnity of the

Nativity of the Lord. Catholic Liturgy celebrates

Christmas as part of the Advent-Christmas-

Epiphany season. So I turn to Wikipedia for

information about the date of Christmas in the

Western and Eastern Churches. "The Gregorian

calendar was a reform of the Julian calendar

instituted in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII." There is a

difference of about 13 days between the two,

because of the number of leap years in a century.

Liturgically, Eastern Churches continue to use the

Julian calendar.

Q. I read the long article about this on Wikipedia, and

I find it very interesting. I'll dazzle my fellow

revelers during the catch-up New Years parties

between now and Ash Wednesday. By the way,

when is Ash Wednesday this year?

A. It will be early, February 10, because Easter

Sunday is early, March 27. This is because the

Western Church follows a lunar calendar to

establish the date of Easter. Are you sufficiently

confused? If so, don't worry about it, because this

is the Holy Year of Mercy. We emphasize the

practice of the Spiritual and Corporal works of

Mercy and come to weekend Masses to pray and

plan rather than to sweat the little things.

Check out the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk at the back of church. There are many different titles. One of these is Aborting America. It is the story of an ex-abortionist and an ex-atheist, Bernard Nathanson. He

was an American medical doctor from New York who helped to found the National Abortion Rights Action League (now NARAL Pro-Choice America). He worked with Betty Friedan and others for the legalization of abortion in the United States. He was for a time the director of the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health, New York's largest abortion clinic. Nathanson has written that he was responsible for more than 75,000 abortions throughout his pro-choice career. He did become a pro-life activist. Born a Jew, but in practice an atheist, he eventually became a Catholic. He had an amazing story of transformation. He died a few years ago. January marks the 43rd anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision of the Supreme Court which legalized abortion.

An overview of the 5 year application and formation process and the time commitment involved and answer questions about ongoing ministry will be provided.. An eligible appli-cant for permanent deacon formation is a man of strong and active faith who can demonstrate a record of service in the communities in which he lives, works and worships. He must be at least 35 years of age and no more than 62 years of age at the time of ordination, in good health, emotionally mature and stable in his professional and personal relation-ships. Men may be single or married. Interested men and their wives are encouraged to attend.
