The school band enjoyed the center stage during the second function. They not only presented coir (A prayer of Truth) but also sang 10th March Commemoration song entitled ‘Sum Choe Dren Lhu’. Scores of volunteers in white T-shirt were busy collecting the litters in every nook and corner of the basketball court. Hats off to the volunteers! Like every year the evening program culminates with the start of the Tambola Game. It attracts all aspects of the people as it involves fun, excitement and above all handsome and attractive prizes. The day not only ended with good note and big returns, but there were no untoward incidents like food poisoning, fight and accidents etc.

UTCV School Observed World TB DayA sound mind needs a sound body. Human health and healthy environment are directly related to each other. Rapid globalization and unchecked consumerism coupled with human greed are taking heavy toll on human health and the natural environment. Despite universal education and Health Care Schemes by the government and various NGOs, millions of people in the world die due to TB every year. Unless we address this issue at a local level, we cannot eradicate this disease from the world. Hence, education and awareness campaign at a school level is the best precaution that we can take to curb this disease.

We observed ‘The World TB Day on 24th March 2018’ on Saturday. Surprisingly, it coincided with the Annual School Spring Fete. Nevertheless, we organized many events on that day to get our

messages across the wide array of people assembled on that gala day. To create awareness of the day, a powerful pictures and drawings by the students containing strong messages were posted all around the basketball court. The students from grade IV and V took part in drawing competition on the theme “How TB is spread, prevented and cured” Their works were exhibited near the school Exhibition Hall. To create awareness on TB Day amongst the students, Mrs. Noryang la, one of the active members of the Health and Environment Committee organized a health talk one day before the actual day during the morning assembly. The senior school students observed the day by participating in writing competition. Top five winners from different categories were given handsome prize on the next day of school by the school Health Committee. Under the close supervision and direction of the School Health and Environment Committee, about 50 volunteers in white Green shirt did a commendable job and kept the basketball court free of litters for whole day during the Spring Fete. At the back of their T-Shirt, it bore a strong message on TB as well.

Senior School Dhagcha Mongsel 2018

Dhagcha Mongsel is very much like the English Spelling Bee Contest. It is a spelling contest in Tibetan where they would test your spelling proficiency in Tibetan words, tenses and phrases etc. It has now become an annual feature in our literary program. It is conducted separately for Secondary and Senior Secondary School so that maximum number of students can take part in it.Senior School Dhagcha Mongsel has become one of the much awaited Tibetan literary program of the school where the selection and sieving of the student are done throughout the year with the 10 finalist participating during the final Senior School Dhagcha Mongsel Contest. The teachers had to work round the clock in finding the best speller of the year. The entire students from class IX to XII participated in it. Every student in the Senior Section underwent four rounds of spelling test. The final of the Senior School Dhagcha Mongsel 2018 took place on 09 May 18 at Herman Gmeiner Hall. It’s been 13 years since I first came to study in Upper TCV and I ponder how these wonderful and memorable years have come to an end.Under its welcoming canopy of learning, Upper TCV has not only taught me the basic primary knowledge found in the school curriculum, but more importantly, it has helped me to discover and develop myself as a person. Whether it is academic or extracurricular activities, Upper TCV has provided me as well as hundreds of other students a sea of opportunities to hone our talents. Truly what I am today is because of the opportunities and the selfless service and support rendered by our dedicated staff members.Upper TCV has been home away from home for thousands of students and this wonderful institution has lighted and guided many more through the course of their lives. As a saying goes ‘all things come to end’ truly the time for me to depart from the sanctuary of Upper TCV has finally dawned. I’m overcome with the feeling of nostalgia of all the years that flew by with the unforgettable memories, and gratitude for all the years of care and guidance. I think a countless words of thanks will not suffice, compared to the magnanimity of love and care you’ve given to us.

VILLAGE UPDATE VOL I YEAR 2018

Hello to all the students and respected teachers,The two years I’ve spend in here were the best years I’ve ever had in my life. Therefore I would like to thank T.C.V for their kindness and to the teachers who stood by us through thick and thin. Although having a board exam has freaked us out yet our teachers have been there to give us courage and to guide us to which I’m extremely grateful. To tell you the truth, freaking out doesn’t help a lot being as a board examiner. You have to be cautious while writing and your overall result reflects your preparation. So, thorough revision of the chapters and solving the numerical problems on day by day would be wise enough to get yourself ready.I’m really going to miss this school and our beloved teachers. I hope we’ll be able to see each other soon in near future. Thank you.

Love, Menthok, X ‘G’

Hello Guys, We have just finished our Board Exams and I would like to share some easy tips which might help you score good and high marks in exam. So, regularity is important if you have that strong sense of procrastination in you. Being regular will definitely help you to cope up all the chapters on time. Second, going through the chapters in detail is also very important as there’s quite a chance for some unexpected questions. Third, Math is the subject which we all need to practice. Some might be smart enough to read Math before going for exam but it would likely not going to help for TCV students. Would it? So, PRACTICE!! PRACTICE!! practice makes man perfect. Lastly never lose hope no matter how hard the subject is, keep learning.

Younten X ‘D’ Exam FearEverybody faces challenges but people overcome their challenges in different ways and means. The most fearful challenge today is the Examination. There are difficulties in sorting the challenges out but one can achieve it if one is ready. You are not the only one who has fear in giving exam. Majority of the people in the world get frightened with exam. Even the mightiest and the most powerful man like Adolf Hitler who usually have no fear in conquering countries but he feared giving exams. Why do we have fears? As a saying goes, “every problem has a solution’, similarly the fear of giving examination also has a solution. Not that solution which we can buy from Chemist or anywhere else, I’m talking about making one by your own. To defeat the fear, you need to put more effort on study. You need to have the consistency, determination, ability to use your smartness. Be a hard worker ,start your work from today not from tomorrow. Yongzin

Thank you T.C.VTCV is a noble institution which helps and guides thousands of poor and needy children like me. I feel lucky and privileged to be part of the great institution. Two years back, when I joined this school, being from Tibetan settlement in Bhutan I was quite foreign to Tibetan language. I always have fear failing in Tibetan examination, so I work harder every year. Honestly, without the guidance of the teachers I would definitely fail. For the last two years , I’ve learnt a lot about our rich Tibetan culture and tradition. Moreover I feel very fortunate and blessed to be able to attend many of His Holiness the Dalai Lama teachings which greatly helped and influenced my life in a big way.In retrospect, I feel that that I must have done some good deeds in my previous lives that I got such a wonderful opportunity to study in this prestigious school. TCV has enriched my life beyond my expectation and for that I’m really indebted to it. I have really enjoyed my stay in this elite school.I pray for the well being of all the staff members and Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Without which I don’t think I would have learnt anything.

Tenzin Metok ‘X B’ Thank you IndiaIT has been more than 58 years since we fled to India. As a student I just want to say Thank you India for helping us. You have done everything that we asked for but we Tibetan have nothing special to give you in return but your generosity and support are ever intact in our heart. Taking this opportunity , I on behalf of all the Tibetan sincerely want to thank India and the people of India from core of my heart and wish you a glorious years ahead.

Tenzin Tashi VI D(305640)My School, My Home, TCV UpperFirst of all “Thank you so much” to Upper TCV for providing stairs in our life. I’m very fortunate to be a member of TCV family. I can’t forget your love and care. To me, TCV is not just a school but it’s a home that provides a parental love and care. I’ve learnt so many good things from the staffs as well as my friends over the last three years. They have guided us through many positive ways. How can I forget home foster mothers because they are one who wake us up early in the morning and help with cooking and cleaning. They have taught us to live a life on your own. The other important people around me were my friends. They are the one with whom we laugh, gossip and fight with. When the world let us down friends are the one who always stand by us. I’ve learnt a lot and I would like to thank all the members of TCV family for their timely help and support without which I don’t think I have achieved anything in my life.

Thank you IndiaI am writing this letter to express my sincere gratitude for the people of India and the kindness they showed towards us. We Tibetans are the most fortunate refugees ever. You let us preserve our culture and language and gave us the freedom more than we deserve. Your generosity and timely support will be cherished and remembered generation after generation. As a mark of gratitude I am once again sincerely thanking Indian people and the Government of India for rendering all the possible help to us.

My Dear Indian Friends,It’s been 59 of years since we’ve been staying in India as refugees. And in that time span we have never been alienated in your home. We are very much grateful to your enormous approach and accepting millions of Tibetan refugees at a time; you’ve provided us an opportunity to conserve our identity and enrich our culture, heritage in your land. We are given our own rights and freedom to practice too; we’re so much indebted to your generosity. Tibetan refugee is now considered the most successful refugees around the world and it’s all because of you. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my dear Indian friends. THANK-YOU INDIA

CHILDREN’S CORNERAn Alien Fantasy

Wednesday28th March,20189:55 amDear Diary,It was such a pleasant summer twilight, the sun was gradually sinking over the horizon. A cool summer breeze blew over my face, as I stood by the edge of the fields, admiring the vast landscape of my hometown. It was as though, nature was calling me out among the fields. So I decided to go for a stroll, despite the fact that it was almost dusk. By the time I reached the dead-end of the field, I realized, I was way far from my home and there was no one in sight. It was dusk already! I took a turn, and started retreating back. But then , a strong wind blew and the ground started to shake. I almost fell on my knees, my hair got tangled. It was all, totally bizarre! Suddenly a space ship sort of a thing came flying from miles away. I quickly hid behind a huge rock and peeped from the side, as the spaceship slowly descended. It was more or less like a UFO. I pinched myself hard, wishing it to be a dream. But turns out it was real. A cold shiver crept down my spine, not believing the fact that I was literally witnessing a so called “Alien Fantasy”, that was only believed to exist in movies and stuffs. But to my surprise a cute alien like creature with big dreamy eyes, slim nose, small mouth and a round face came out. It was fat and stuffy, I wanted to cuddle it right away. It’s fur was smooth and silky and turquoise in color. It’s ironic how I found an alien cute, because earthlings consider aliens as an ugly, bizarre creatures and even the word alien itself describes something unattractive. What happened next, anyway ? Well, I made a deal with these aliens not to tell anybody. Not even you dear diary, no offense!

My Khimtsang ExperienceWhen I first came in for TCV Summer Camp I was surprised at the age difference of the participants. Some were at the age of around 5-6 while others were around 13-14. At first I was intimidated as everyone looked so grim and solid faced when I first saw the older kids. As I began to stay in the Khimtsang more often, I learned that they are very good people. During my first lunch time I was surprised to see new faces, so I asked Karma Wangyal who they were. He told me that they were day scholars, people who don’t stay in Khimtsang and get to go home every day. As Summer Camp passed and I became a regular student, I felt as if I was suddenly closer to everyone without the Summer Camp classes getting in the way. In the end I am very happy with my Khimtsang and can’t imagine being in any other.

A letter From Me To You.May be there will be a time in your life when you feel like the whole world is moving against you, that the problem you are facing now is going to swallow you whole and it feels like you are just standing there while everyone’s running past you.A time will come when you feel like work is piling up on your head and you freeze up not knowing what to do. A time when it feels like your friends found new friends and your family don’t seem to remember you exist anymore. A time when nothing seems to be going right and it feels like a boulder’s resting on hour heart, almost squishing it flat. But when a time like that comes remember that it will pass, everything will get better and the sun will still shine

IllnessWhen we fall ill.

It takes all our thrill. So we have to take so many pills.

But still, some get killed. So no matter if you are fine or ill, just chill.

And take good care of your health. For health is the best wealth.

Illness is more dangerous than a knife, As it can destroy your life.

For falling ill, Sometimes makes a long bill. So take good care.

For illness is worse than a nightmare. And eat foods which are pure,

As prevention is better than cure.

A short story by Kesang Gawa Class VI PElizabeth Brook sat in her living room with her two children around her, telling them a story they had never been told, not even once. “I had two friends when I was 14.” Elizabeth said softly. “What were their names, Mum?” asked the older child. Elizabeth smiled. She was in a dreamlike trance, stuck in the past.” Iv and Meeki, dear,” She replied. “They were my best friends, but they were never the same after one evening. They told me about it. This is what they said….”

The Story of Iv and MeekiThey were walking down the street when they saw an abandoned building with a broken down old sign that said “Helen’s Books.” They decided to explore. They entered the shop, but they heard a click behind them. The door had locked. All by itself. They tried jiggling the knob, picking the lock with hair pins, even kicking it, but it didn’t open.

Behind them, they heard a creak. They turned around to look at the once empty space and saw a statue of a 1900’s “flapper” paired with a phantom shadow with glowing eyes, pigtails, and a knife. The two sides, monster and human, stared at each other for a few long seconds. The door suddenly opened with another click and Iv and Meeki rushed out of the building. But when they finally looked back, the bookshop was nowhere to be seen.“Aw well, your old mum is going to sleep now!” said Elizabeth, rising. Her younger child was looking around, no doubt afraid of the story’s creatures. The two children stayed to watch TV. About to open her bedroom door, Elizabeth heard the genuinely terrified screams of her kids, cut off with an inhuman giggle. While sprinting down the hall way, she heard her husband’s angry shouts, ended with a sound like stone on stone. When she finally arrived in the living room, she saw the stone statue of flapper standing over the bloodied figures of her family. No, she thought, knees knocking. No, it isn’t them. But it was them, and she knew that because then she spotted the shadow, dissecting her children and making excited noises. Both monsters turned their heads to face her. The statue’s neck made the sound of nails on chalkboard, but the shadow had made no sound when turning. They grinned. And took a step towards Elizabeth.

My Most Unforgettable MomentMy most unforgettable moment was when I was in class three . It was during Ms Jigme Sangmo la’s period. While mam was busy writing on the green board I threw a crumpled paper on the board. As bad luck would have it, it hit her and mam caught me red handed. Obviously she was so furious that told me to leave the class right away. During the long break she called me to the staff room and scolded me so badly before the whole teachers. I was so embarrassed that I cannot help crying bitterly. My friend came and consoled me a lot. When I stop crying I retold my incident to my friends. I implored them to keep it secret because I was so ashamed of what had happened on that day. So this is my most unforgettable moment till now.

Good NeighborsMost of the people have their own neighbors but having a good neighbors is very essential. They can be helpful for us in many ways. If an urgent work crops up and if we suddenly have to go outside, we have to turn to our good neighbor for help. They will readily look after our house. Sometimes we have to go out in sheer haste, we forget to turn off the gas stove and if the house catches fire, a good neighbor would come to our rescue and save us. Having a good neighbor is like having a good environment. Like a proverbial “ Love thy neighbor, they neighbor unto you” So maintaining a good relationship and helping each other in your neighborhood area is very important. We shouldn’t think about harming each other instead we should help each other when ever needed.

Ama Jetsun Pema LaAma Jetsun Pema la is the younger sister of H.H the 14th Dalai Lama. She is like a God Mother to all the Tibetan children. Her guidance is always with us. Because of her selfless service we could study in such a good school where we can learn a blend of both modern and traditional system of education. Many children who came far away from Tibet to India to

study neither have relatives nor parents here in India but Ama Jetsun Pema treats them like her own children. Ama Jetsun Pema means a lot to all of us. We are indeed very grateful to her.The recent award which she got from the President of India is a testimony to her selfless service to the education of young Tibetans ..The love and care she gave us will never go in waste.I would like to thank her from the bottom of my heart and may she lives a long and a healthy life.

A Notebook AdventureCassie looks around. Where is she? Everything is white with lines. She walks as far as she can go. Cassie finds a small perfect line, like a tiny rift. She jumps over it. The first thing she sees is drawings of fish on the floor. They’re really pretty, she thinks. Then she sees a shark. It’s coming to eat the fish! Cassie tries to run away, but she realizes that the shark and the fish are drawn with black ink on the floor. She moves on.She comes to the end of this stage of this weird, white, black lined world. Cassie looks over the edge, but it’s too far to jump. Then she sees a crack. She climbs in and pushes the shark drawing away from her head, apparently its very light and thin as paper. Cassie finds random doodles on the floor. Swirly tornadoes, stick men (and women), some more fish and so on. Now knowing the secret of this dimension, she goes on to the next crack. She finds an essay written in neat writing .It is about how people should help the environment and not litter. Cassie approves!!! But when she looks around, she sees no trash in this ink stained world, that’s weird. She goes on crack after crack, doodle after doodle, and essay after essay. She looks right, left, forwards, backwards, and downwards, but all this time Cassie never looks up. Until she reaches the real end to this place. A board of whitish gray material harder than the rest of the floors, only then does she look up.“Hi!” she says brightly, seeing you.

TPD for a noble cause“The most valuable resource that all teachers have is to help each other. Without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspective”

-Robert John MeehanTeacher Professional Development (TPD) programs are programs whereby teachers undertake a wide range of professional learning activities to upgrade their content knowledge and pedagogical skills. It is through these programs that teachers validate the fact that they are learners first. The term TPD is not at all an alien for the Tibetan teachers because the practice has been going on since long time ago although not as systematic and guided like the present one, which came into being in 2014 through the Department of Education, CTA through series of surveys, discussions and workshops.Since then, this program has been going on comparatively

well in almost all the Tibetan schools. This program has been one of the many priorities of the Department of Education, CTA. As such TCV also had taken its share in the call of the duty and straightaway, appointed a special TPD officer, whose sole responsibility was to offer support and guidance for the TCV teachers in TPD programs. This year, the teachers in TCV schools have their weekly TPD common periods as per EDC meeting. As a part of their collaborative practice, the members in the subject department meet up at different venues and address on educational matters requiring immediate action or concern. Thus they have their full freedom over the choice of their activities, which is the cornerstone of any professional development programs. The teachers are the ones who are actually dealing with the students and as such they know exactly what professional development they need. (cont. at page 15) .....

....(cont. from page 14) Nevertheless, for such significant programs and activities to go effectively, both the teachers and school heads have their important roles to play. The teachers’ attitude towards teacher professional development programs must be positive. It would be good if they welcome these programs as irrefutable part of their profession in strengthening themselves as an educator in general and a teacher in particular. Likewise, the school leaders, after taking into consideration the heavy workload of the teachers, should take the role of a facilitator and support the teacher materially or more importantly emotionally in pushing forward their teachers in their professional developments programs. In nutshell, the quality of the education our students receive is directly connected to the effectiveness of the teacher professional development programs carried out in schools. And this effectiveness of TPD programs solely rests upon the attitude of the teachers and the regular support from the school heads. TPD has a long way to go!
