A proclamation issued by the Governor General, Lord Monck, was announced in June of 1868, calling upon “all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the Anniversary of the formation of the Dominion of Canada.” In May of 1879, a Royal Assent was enacted to “make the first day of July a Public Holiday by the Name of Dominion Day.” The British North America Act divided the province of Canada into Ontario and Quebec. Canada then became regarded as having become its own dominion, but the British Parliament retained limited rights of political power over the brand new country. Gradually, over the next 115 years, the controls were handed over, and in 1982, the Constitution Act made it official. TIDBITS® CELEBRATES

CANADA DAYby Kathy Wolfe

As Canada observes the July 1st holiday, Tidbits takes a closer look at the history of our heritage.

• Originally called “Dominion Day,” the July 1st holiday commemorates the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces, which occurred on July 1, 1867. A proclamation issued by the Governor General, Lord Monck, was announced in June of 1868, calling upon “all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the Anniversary of the formation of the Dominion of Canada.” In May of 1879, a Royal Assent was enacted to “make the first day of July a Public Holiday by the Name of Dominion Day.”

• The British North America Act divided the province of Canada into Ontario and Quebec. Canada then became regarded as having become its own dominion, but the British Parliament retained limited rights of political power over the brand new country. Gradually, over the next 115 years, the controls were handed over, and in 1982, the Constitution Act made it official.

• Legend has it that Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley, a Canadian politician, was the one to come up with the term “Dominion” in Canada’s name.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you don’t like to change plans once they’re set, once again, you might find that do-ing so can make a big difference in your favor. Family matters dominate the weekend.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)You continue to get encouragement for your proposals, including some support from unlikely sources. Use this positive flow to move forward with your plans. Good luck.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)Family matters are dominant this week. It’s a good time to be with those you love. It’s also a good time to contact and reunite with loved ones with whom you’ve lost touch.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to allow differences of opinion to create unpleasant feelings, especially in the workplace. A neutral observer could check out the situation and suggest a resolution.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) While the Lion’s Den is the center of attention this week, with family matters dominating much of your time, workplace issues are also impor-tant. Try to find a balance between them.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The future of a new relationship could depend on how much the usually impatient-to-get-things-done Virgo is willing to stop pushing and let things happen naturally.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Worry over a loved one’s well-being is eased with good news from a sympathetic source. Your continued show of love and support is important. Stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to consider mending fences with someone you wish was back in your life. Forget about blame, and focus on the good things you once shared.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to start researching in-formation regarding whatever changes you’re considering, whether it involves a new home, a new location or a new job.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A long-anticipated job opportunity could turn out to be less than you expected. But appear-ances might be deceiving. Check it out before you decide it’s not for you.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Good news: Adapting to a new situation might come more easily than you expected. You can look for continued support from colleagues who appreciate your contributions.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Someone you care for might need more reassur-ance from the typically “unemotional” Pisces. Go ahead. Open up, and you might be surprised at what you find when you do.

BORN THIS WEEK: You are a romantic at heart, although you can be amazingly practical when you need to be.

On July 9, 1777, New York elects Brigadier Gen. George Clinton as the first governor of the inde-pendent state of New York. Clinton would go on to become New York’s longest-serving governor, as well as the longest-serving governor in the United States, holding the post until 1795.

On July 8, 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry, repre-senting the U.S. government, sails into Tokyo Bay, Japan. The Japanese accepted letters from President Millard Fillmore, making the United States the first Western nation in two centuries to establish rela-tions with Japan.

On July 10, 1887, a dam breaks in Zug, Switzer-land, killing 70 people. The resulting wall of water was so powerful that rescue boats launched to assist people caught up in the sudden flood were ineffec-tive as they capsized in the roiling waters.

On July 11, 1922, the Hollywood Bowl, one of the world’s largest natural amphitheaters, opens. Its stage was a wooden platform with a canvas top and audiences sat on moveable benches set on the hill-sides of the surrounding canyon. In 1926, a group of Los Angeles architects built the Hollywood Bowl’s first shell.

On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at a swimming pool in Paris. Reard dubbed the suit the “bikini,” in-spired by a news-making U.S. atomic bomb test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.

On July 7, 1962, “The Stripper,” by David Rose, becomes the No. 1 pop hit in America. When a Los Angeles disc jockey heard the piece, he thought it was so funny that he played it almost continuously during his program one day. Soon “The Stripper” was a national hit, and well on its way to becoming a permanent piece of American pop culture.

On July 6, 1976, in Annapolis, Md., the United States Naval Academy admits women for the first time in its history with the induction of 81 female midshipmen. In May 1980, Elizabeth Anne Rowe became the first woman member of the class to graduate.

CANADA DAY (continued): • According to the tale, Tilley had been

reading Psalm 72:8 during his morning devotions, a Bible verse that states: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the Earth.” The story has a few holes in it, however, since the word “dominion” had already been used when speaking of other British territories, and wasn’t a new idea.

• Dominion Day has been used as the initiation day of several significant occurrences. The first national radio network was put in place on that day in 1927, as was the first CBC cross-country television broadcast on July 1, 1958. The first color television transmission followed in 1959. Although countrymen had been singing “O Canada” since 1880, it wasn’t established as the country’s national anthem until Dominion Day in 1980.

• “O Canada” was first performed at a Quebec City banquet in June of 1880 at the time of the St. Jean-Baptiste Day celebrations. The song was composed by Calixa Lavalee, a prominent composer who was known as Canada’s national musician. He set to music a poem written by Judge Adolphe-Basile Routhier, a distinguished Canadian judge and founding member of the Royal Society of Canada, who was later appointed Chief Justice of Quebec. Although Calixa Lavalee wrote about 60 compositions, only half of them have been found. His 1891 obituary

TIDBITTESTIMONIALS

“What a great little paper. Its so nice to pick up a paper with no bad news or political viewpoints. We put an ad in the paper and got immediate results. We obviously arent the only ones who enjoy Tidbits!! Its the first thing our clients pick up when they are waiting.”

Dr Cameron Grant DC Monashee Chiropractic & Message

You know about the Sorrento streets with names from famous battles. Well, this week I came across some interesting information from the Battle of the Sexes in the 1943 work place Due to men being off to war, women were filling work positions formerly held by men. So these were some guidelines set out to help male managers deal with these changes. (The full article is at Beryls, Books & Beans.) • Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility … less flirtatious but still lots of pep.• When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time … (the others) have a hard time adapting and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy.• General experience indicates that “husky” girls (just a little on the heavy side) are more even-tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.• Retain a physician to give each woman a special physical exam. This step not only protects against … lawsuits, but also reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses, which would make her mentally or physically unfit.• Give the female employee a definite daylong schedule of duties so she’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes.• Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods … to make allowances for feminine psychology. She has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.• Be tactful … giving instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman; it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.Thank God for our mothers and grandmothers … we’ve come a long way baby!

Beryl’s Books and Beans now open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm and Friday until 9pm. For lunch or supper enjoy our Salad Bar with meat kebobs or Paninis. Also, check out our new products and collectibles. Wanted: Musicians … come jam anytime.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 9-month-old Dachshund, “Betty,” whom I have trained to use “wet pads.” She has been very good, with one exception: When she has to urinate she gets her front paws on the pad and starts going, and the urine ends up half on the pad and the rest on the floor (thank God I have tile). It is hard for me to take her outside. I don’t want to scold her, as it would only confuse the situation. Any sugges-tions? -- Kay, via e-mail

DEAR KAY: I like that you’re keeping Betty’s training positive, and I think that a combined solution can work here.Use a piece of wood to create a bumper that can be placed against the edge of the pee pad. It doesn’t need to be very high -- three or four inch-es at most -- but it should extend to both edges of the pad where Betty usually hangs her butt. Duct tape the wood to the floor.Take Betty to the pee pad on a leash for the next few days, around the time that she typically uses

it. Let her investigate the bumper, and then lead her onto the pad, facing her usual direction. Let her start peeing on her own.She should automatically move forward before squatting to pee. As soon as she does this and starts going, give her lots of praise and when she’s fin-ished, add a treat and more praise. If she doesn’t automatically move up to avoid the bumper, stand in front of her while holding her leash and give the command “come,” and then “stay” when she’s in position. Let her continue the pee ritual and follow with lots of praise. The idea here is to get her to go “Oh, I get it!” or at least associate the middle of the pad with good things. When she starts going straight to that posi-tion without prompting, remove the bumper board. Repeat the training session, with lots of praise when she goes in the middle of the pad.

Helping Dachshund to Improve Her Aim

It was multitalented Robert Anton Wilson -- he was, at various times in his life, a novelist, essayist, psy-chologist, editor, philosopher, playwright and mys-tic -- who made the following observation: “It only takes 20 years for a liberal to become a conservative without changing a single idea.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released its study on the costs of raising a child. Those who have children may not be surprised to learn that the average two-parent, middle-income family spends a whopping $222,360 on the child through the age of 17 -- and that figure, or course, doesn’t include the cost of a college education. The blue whale is the largest animal known to have ever existed. The marine mammal is so large, in fact, that a grown man could swim through its largest blood vessels.

The company known as Ulysse Nardin, based in Switzerland, is known for its line of luxury watches. They’ve recently expanded their offerings, though, so the next time you’re in the market for a cell phone, you might want to check out their version of Google’s Android model. You also might want to check your bank account; this gold-plated piece of technology will retail for $50,000. Here’s a sign of our increasingly cluttered lives: When the National Association of Professional Or-ganizers was formed, in 1985, it had five members. Today there are more than 4,000 registered organiz-ers with the group. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, those who hold the most dangerous job in America aren’t firefighters or police officers; they’re taxi driv-ers, with 22.7 homicides for every 100,000 workers each year.

did not even include a mention of his most famous accomplishment, “O Canada.”

• The Saint Lawrence Seaway was flooded on Dominion Day, 1958. This seaway system, which begins in the U.S. State of Minnesota, extends about 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) to the Atlantic Ocean. It makes up a portion of the border between Ontario and New York State. Twenty-two thousand workers were required to create the system, beginning in 1954. Ten Ontario communities were submerged in the process, and became known as “The Lost Villages.” The project necessitated the relocation of about 6,500 citizens to new planned communities.

• You may not recognize the name of Eileen Butter, but this young lady was famous in her own right. Hailing from Ancaster, Ontario, Eileen was crowned the first Miss Dominion of Canada on Dominion Day in 1959. The beauty pageant was held into the 1980s in Niagara Falls, with the winner representing Canada at the Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Queen of the Pacific pageants.

• Since the 1950s, Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario have unified Canada Day and the U.S. Independence Day (July 4) with

DON’T GET WET! (continued):

• The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

• If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

• While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

• If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

• Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!

an International Freedom Festival. A giant fireworks display can be seen over the Detroit River, which separates the two cities. The cities are connected by a partially-submerged tunnel, which was completed in 1930. About 28,000 vehicles use the tunnel daily. Each city owns 50% of the tunnel.

• Canada’s national flag, also referred to as the Maple Leaf, translates to l’Unifolié in French, meaning “the one-leafed.” The eleven points of the red maple leaf do not represent any specific thing, such as ten provinces and one point for the territories. The current flag design has been around since 1965. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson called for a flag change, and a design by George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson was selected and proclaimed the new flag by Queen Elizabeth II. On February 15, 1965, (now celebrated as the National Flag of Canada Day), the new design made its debut. • Many Quebec residents don’t get an opportunity to celebrate Canada Day. Ever since 1973, the day has been used to move furniture and boxes to a new location. That’s when the Quebec government decreed that new leases should begin on that day in order to prevent disruption of the school calendar. About 10 percent of apartments change hands on “Moving Day,” making it tough to find commercial movers on

a holiday. • The Constitutional Act of 1982, also known

as the Canada Act, made Canada its own

CANADA DAY (continued):sovereign state, officially ending Great Britain’s powers of legislation. It was approved by the British parliament on March 25 of that year, and proclaimed by the queen three weeks later. An Act of Parliament on October 27, 1982 brought an official name change from Dominion Day to “Canada Day.”

• Although Canada became a dominion in 1867, and the holiday declared, there weren’t any official celebrations until the 50th anniversary of the proclamation in 1917.

• Newfoundland and Labrador also honor July 1 as their Memorial Day. It commemorates the heavy losses of the Newfoundland Regiment on July 1, 1916, the first day of World War I’s Battle of the Somme, one of the largest battles of the war. Of the regiment’s 780 men, only 68 were found the following morning, the others lost in less than 30 minutes on the countryside of France. The British Army suffered nearly 60,000 casualties during the battle, a battle known for its first use of the tank.

FIREWORKS Compared to the big bangs of today, the first fireworks had humble beginnings. They were actually nothing more than green bamboo thrown into fires to scare spirits away in ancient China.

• Believe it or not, in the 1400s, Florence, Italy, was the center of the fireworks industry. At the time, fireworks were just one effect in a celebration rather than its focus. At religious festivals, Italians made plaster figures that spewed fireworks from their eyes and mouths.

• Fireworks were originally applied to warfare by attaching them to arrows. The first such use, in 1,200 A.D., involved placing powder into paper tubes attached to the arrows with a fuse or a trail of gunpowder wrapped in tissue paper.

• The 1533 coronation parade for Anne Boleyn included a papier-mâché dragon that belched fire.

• Fireworks became very popular in Great Britain during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The great William Shakespeare mentions fireworks in his plays, and fireworks were so much enjoyed by the Queen herself that she created a “Fire Master of England.” King James II was so pleased with the fireworks display that celebrated his coronation that he knighted his Fire Master.

Stick a return-address sticker on the inside of your eyeglass case. If you leave it behind some-where, you’ll up the odds of having it returned to you.

To remove grass stains, try dabbing with rubbing alcohol and blotting with a white, clean cloth. Repeat as necessary.

“Make a drink cover with aluminum foil. Cover drink tightly, then poke a straw through the foil. This will keep pesky bugs away from your beverage. And you can jot your name on top, to boot. We’ve done this at our barbecues for ages.” -- T.C. in Minnesota

To clean your oven, simply fill a small dish with ammonia and set it in the oven overnight. In the morning, you’ll be able to wipe the baked-on foods away.

“Baby oil will make a stainless-steel sink look superb. Just squirt a little on a paper towel and use it to shine the sink and surrounding area.” -- A Reader, via e-mail

One way to untangle jewelry is to set it in a shal-low dish of baby powder and then try to work out the kinks. The powder acts as a lubricant, but won’t make your hands or fingers feel messy or greasy.

• The first fireworks recorded in America were set off by an Englishman, Captain John Smith. Smith, of course, gained fame in the story of Pocahontas.

• The first Independence Day fireworks celebration was in 1776 and was memorialized by then future President John Adams as follows: “The day (Independence Day) will be the most memorable in the history of America. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end of this continent to the other, from this day forward forevermore.”

• During World War II, the first bomb dropped on Tokyo, Japan, was made by a fireworks company in the United States. At that time of national need, most fireworks companies changed to wartime production, as was also the case in World War I and the Civil War.

• Fireworks central in the U.S.A.: New Castle, Pennsylvania, home to the nationally recognized display companies Zambelli Fireworks Internationale and Pyrotechnico, proclaims itself to be the “Fireworks capital of America.” Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks of Loveland, Ohio, also began operations in New Castle, before moving its headquarters to the Cincinnati area.

• The Zambellis are known as America’s “first family of fireworks.” Antonio Zambelli came to the United States from Italy and established Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Company in 1893.

• Workers who make firecrackers have to be sure to wear an ensemble that is entirely cotton so that the static electricity generated by their ordinary clothing will not set off the fireworks.

• The value of fireworks imported from China represents the bulk of all U.S. fireworks imports (about $217 million). U.S. exports of fireworks, by comparison, amount to $42.9 million, with the United Arab Emirates purchasing more than any other single country ($14.5 million).

If you’re hitting the road on a trip this summer, you might be looking for a new car game to keep every-one happy, occupied and amused. Tired of playing 20 questions, license-plate search and travel bingo? Try one of my family favorites we call “penny-wise travel game.” I guarantee it will entertain passengers in both the back seat and the front. Before the trip, round up several small containers that snap closed or have tight-fitting lids, such as breath-mint tins, small cardboard matchboxes or travel-size jars. Just be sure the opening is larger than a penny. Fill the containers with stray pennies from your house, and snap or screw the lids shut. Then, on strips of paper that will fit around the containers, list some things the traveling players can do with the

pennies. Here are some ideas to get you started:--Let everyone in the car guess how many pennies are in a particular container. When everyone has guessed, count the pennies to find out.--Take turns and list how many separate items you can buy for that amount of money. For example, if there are 35 pennies in a mint tin, think of what can be purchased nowadays for 35 cents. You might be grasping for answers!--Guess which date appears most frequently on the pennies in the container. --List the dates on another piece of paper. Then think of events that took place for each, such as Superbowl and World Series champions. Include your family events, too. --Find the penny with the oldest date. Imagine and then talk about all the places that penny may have traveled through the years before it landed in the container. Maybe it fell in the ocean but was

retrieved along the shore. Did it travel down the Mississippi on a riverboat? Who are the U.S. presidents who might have held that very penny in their hands?Wrap the strips of game ideas around the contain-ers and hold them in place with a rubberband or string. Once on the road, just as you feel the “When are we gonna get there?” blues begin, divert your travelers and hand them a container of pennies for their thoughts.
