The TOPEX/Poseidon Satellite can measure the sea surface elevation using Radar Altimetry. Ten measurements per second are taken as it tracks between

65 degrees north and south latitudes over 10 days. Tidal elevations have regular periods so they can be separated from other sea surface changes.
