creativeCRAFT & CREATION

White Line Woodcut PrintmakingA truly American printmaking technique, white line printmaking started in the early 20th century by a group of six Massachusetts artists inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. Frustrated by more time-intensive woodblock prints that re-quired several carved blocks, the Provincetown artists developed a simple, low tech, printmaking technique to hand print colorful prints without a press using only one block of wood. A simple V-shaped line is carved into a block of wood to de-lineate an outline drawing. Once a sheet of paper is pinned to the board, each shape is hand paint-ed with watercolor. The paper is lowered down over the board and is rubbed to print and transfer the color and image. Each area is painted and printed individually to build up the im-age and density of colors. The carved line will not print, giving the print its namesake: a white line around the colorful shapes. Instructor: Theresa Haberkorn14664 Sat 9:00am
