Tigers Tigers are about 1 metre high and can be almost 3 metres long! Diet Tigers mainly eat deer, wild pigs, water buffalo and antelope. They also sometimes eat sloth bears, dogs, leopards, crocodiles, pythons, monkeys and hares. Population 100 years ago there were around tigers in the wild. Today there are only about tigers. Endangered Tigers are an endangered species which means they are at risk of becoming extinct (no longer alive). They are illegally killed by humans because their skins are valuable, and also because their body parts are used in some Asian medicines. Where are tigers found? Tigers are found in South and Southeast Asia, China and the Russian Far East. Habitats Tigers live in a variety of places: Tropical rainforests Evergreen forests Mangrove swamps Savannah (grasslands) Rocky country Behaviour Tigers are mostly nocturnal and they use their stripes for camouflage to help them hunt. They are predators which means they prey on other animals for food. Tigers are also very good swimmers! Baby tigers Baby tigers are called tigers cubs. Tiger cubs live with their mother until they are about 2 years old, then they leave to live alone. Mother tigers usually have 3-4 cubs in each litter. Tiger Facts The roar of a tiger can be heard over a mile away! Tigers have more than 100 stripes and no two tigers have the same pattern! Tigers can roar, but they cant purr! Tigers walk on their toes! A tiger can jump up to 3 metres in a single jump! Tiger Facts In the wild tigers live up to 15 years! Tigers hunt by sight and hearing not smell. Tigers eat massive meals but can often go a week without food. A group of tigers is known as an ambush or a streak. White tigers are rare!
