    TimNet 2010 ! 1

TimNetWiki-Tastic!I hope that you have all enjoyed Term one of the

ICT PD. The year tends more to focus integratingthe skills into the classroom.

    Wikis

The TimNet wiki is the hinge pin that holds thecluster together and after speaking to a few of youin the rst term it seems that teachers are in verydifferent stages, ranging from what the hell is awiki? to yes I have one.

Wikis are a online space that everyone can edit. Soyou can create a webpage (in about 5 minutes) andyou and your students can contribute to the space.

    Classroom

Students can use wikis as platforms forcollaborative problem solving; group laboratoryreports; "WebEssays" (essays that combine images, text, and hyperlinks); classroom writing projects;and the creation of a class "textbook." Basically, wikis can be used to support any type of collaborative student project.

The fact is as we all teach in different way wewould all use them in different ways. Theimportant thing is to have a pull factor there - areason for the students to go there and also spendsome time in your lesson to introduce it to thestudents. Its excellent to have everything that youwant for them in one place on the web.

Some good examples of class wikis are:

Douchy!Andrew really started the day off with a bang and

managed to show us what can be achieved. Theuse of podcasts, web 2.0 tools, quizzes, instantmessaging, etc was amazing and good to see thathe wasnt a geeky ICT teacher! I found it is a littledaunting to see how much time he has spentpreparing his web based resources, but it was arelief to that he had introduced each of his toolsone year at a time. It shows that once you have itthere its done and you only have to improve it.

His notes from his workshops are available on thewiki and there is a link to his blog below.

Other nots from workshops have also been placed

on th e wiki for your to use.

    2! TimNet 2010

PLGs?!?!The Professional Learning Groups have been set upto help teachers integrate ICT into their classroom. The meeting is intended to bring teachers from thesame Learning Area together on a mini project thatthey can collaborate on. The rst term has justbeen to set a goal for the rest of the year.

    English

The rst to meet and decided to use theMahara E-Portfolio software to trial bloggingwith one of their classes this year.

    Art

A diverse group that decided on two topics of using Single Lense Reect Cameras and videoproduction.

    Maths

Create a wiki for teachers and students to usethat will group resources on a year and topicbasis.

    Social Science

Create a wiki for teacher use only so that theteachers can share resources between subjects.

    Technology

Create a wiki for teachers to share resources -especially with the current changes.

Use Educo to create online topics and allowstudents to upload and share their own work.

    Language

Use the E-Portfolio feature of Mahara toshowcase student work and attach MP3 soundbites.

if you want to examine in more detail all of theirprogress is updated in the wiki..... or you can justask the members in person.

Web 2.0Originally web pages used to read like a book with links toother pages. Now we can edit, upload, collaborate, evenrun auctions all of this is Web 2.0

    wallwisher.com

Allows students to add comments to a web page allat the same time. This takes about 2 minutes to set upand engages students - especially when they nd outthey are anonymous. Ive used this to ask quick questions and get answers from the group. Or askedthem to upload links to research ideas whilst it is upon the whiteboard updating itself.

    clipgenerator.com

Tried this just for this review. In 3 easy steps allowsstudents to show photographs in a professionalmanner.

    1.pick music

    2.upload pics

    3.done!

    tubechop.com

Have you ever wanted one minute of a ten minuteweb clip?? Tube Chop allows you to cut youtube andother clips.

Just copy the web address of your clip and paste intothe site and CHOP! Cannot be simpler!

EducoThis is a Learning Management System and is used for online course delivery. It is available to all of usin the cluster and there are teachers in your schoolwho use it. It is not an intranet as it is course andsubject specic and is being used across the SouthIsland. It allows students a place to learn through

    blended learning.

http://educo.vln.school.nz / Moodle is the software behind Educo and isdifferent as it is built for education.

The focus of the Moodle project is always ongiving educators the best tools to manage andpromote learning, but there are many ways touse Moodle:

Moodle has features that allow it to scale tovery large deployments and hundreds of thousands of students, yet it can also be usedfor a primary school or an education hobbyist.

Many institutions use it as their platform toconduct fully online courses, while some use itsimply to augment face-to-face courses (knownas blended learning).

Many of our users love to use the activitymodules (such as forums, databases and wikis)to build richly collaborative communities of learning around their subject matter (in thesocial constructionist tradition), while othersprefer to use Moodle as a way to deliver contentto students (such as standard SCORMpackages) and assess learning usingassignments or quizzes.

Recently added to Educo has been VLNPortfolio. This will add the Mahara software(myportfolio). This allows students and teachersa place to social network and showcase theirwork.
