Dear Fellow Members:
While it is usually still scorching hot in Memphis during September, our minds can’t help but drift towards the pleasures of Autumn... Cooler temperatures, full patios, an increase in whiskey sales and golf. Yes, golf. That’s right our Annual Thomas Boggs Memorial Golf Tournament is right around the corner. October 23rd at Mirimichi. Book your foursome or secure your sponsorship today by contacting [email protected]. September is National Food Safety Awareness Month and a great time to establish your ‘Food Employee Health Policy.’ If you attended our ‘Decoding the Health Code’ meeting in May, you know the importance of getting a head start on preparing your business for the upcoming changes in the state Health Code. A sample ‘Health Policy’ that you can customize for your establishment is available in the Membership Portal of MemphisRestaurants.com. Speaking of being prepared, are you up to speed on the Affordable Health Care Act and how it affects your business? October 1, 2013 is the deadline to notify your employees about open enrollment for state exchanges. By law, all employers have to notify employees in writing of the soon-to-be-available exchanges and possible available tax credits and government assistance based on the size of your business. You will have to keep records that you have provided notification to every employee. MRA Members can download a sample ‘Exchange Notice’ from the Membership Portal on our website. We’re also working on securing a panel of healthcare experts to help you ensure your business is compliant with the Affordable Healthcare Act and that you have all the tools necessary to ensure healthy lifestyle choices for your employees. We’ll email you a meeting date soon! We’ve lost a lot of icons of the industry recently. Honor their memories by creating your own unique Memphis experience in your business. Memphis has a deep pool of culinary talent, an excellent network of local farms and approachable vendors but what really sets us apart from the rest of the country is our long list of characters that make up our restaurant community. While they might march or dance to the beat of their own drum, they always let their love of Memphis guide their actions. As my pal Russell George used to say... Ragged but right.

Affordable Healthcare Act
DID YOU KNOW THAT BEGINNING OCTOBER 1, 2013
ANY BUSINESS WITH AT LEAST ONE (1) EMPLOYEE AND
$500,000 IN ANNUAL REVENUE MUST NOTIFY ALL
EMPLOYEES BY LETTER ABOUT THE AFFORDABLE CARE
ACT’S HEALTH-CARE EXCHANGES, OR FACE UP TO
A $100 / PER WORKER / PER DAY FINE?
The MRA is working hard to gather information on the Affordable Healthcare Act that will help you ensure your business is compliant with the new law. In ad-ditional to information provided here, we will be holding a seminar to help educate our members. Stay tuned to our events page for meeting dates. If your business is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act, it should provide a written notice to its employees about the Health Insurance Marketplace by October 1, 2013, but there is no fine or penalty under the law for failing to provide the notice. The notice should inform employees:About the Health Insurance Marketplace; That, depending on their income and what coverage may be offered by the em-ployer, they may be able to get lower cost private insurance in the Marketplace; andThat if they buy insurance through the Marketplace, they may lose the employer contribution (if any) to their health benefits. Employers are required to have employees sign that they have received notifi-cation and to keep a record of that notification in the employee’s file. The U.S. Department of Labor has provided two model notices to help employ-ers comply. There is one model for employers who do not offer a health plan and another model for employers who offer a health plan or some or all employees:

MRA Bids Farewell to Russell George Russell George, owner, Ernestine & Hazel’s died earlier this month. Russell was a kind hearted man with a generous and trusting soul. Friends knew him as a quiet story teller eager to share tales of Ernestine’s building, the neighborhood, and Memphis. A champion for the less for-tunate, it was common to see him serve a “Soul Burger” and beer to a homeless pa-tron. Russell’s spirited and giving nature will be missed by many. A Memorial Mass was held September 13th at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Russell George and the historic Ernes-tine & Hazel’s have been remembered in several recent blogs. Informative and touching you are invited to check them out.
