January was a great meeting at member firm MMAC, where we had two great speakers: Pat O’Brien, President of Milwaukee Development Corporation and Jim Paetsch, Vice President of Corporate Expansion and Attraction at Milwaukee 7. Pat gave us a truly unique perspective on the goals of the MDC, many of their real estate transactions in the greater downtown area and in-turn, the positive impact on the city, residents, and economic development. Jim gave us interesting insights as to how he and the team at Milwaukee 7 “sells” the Milwaukee region to perspective companies like Foxconn, Haribo and Amazon, as well as keep companies, such as Milwaukee Tool, in the region. I think we all agree that we could have listened to them far longer than our time allowed! The number of representatives and guests in attendance did not go unnoticed. Awesome, ladies! I’m looking forward to our February meeting, which is always one of our most well-loved meetings of the year. The Philanthropy Committee is hard at work putting together the perennially-popular Heartfelt and Handmade fundraiser, which raises funds for our chapter’s operating budget. I hope you will consider donating an item for the fundraiser. Our chapter is full of creative and talented women! Or, your support can be expressed at the meeting in the purchase of drawing tickets for the unique and heartwarming items donated by our chapter representatives. Either way it’s WIN – WIN, and your support is appreciated! Please, take some time in the next few weeks to think about the updated EWI Vision Statement: To enhance professional growth and development within a diverse group of women while empowering them to make a difference as they inspire others. The representatives of the Milwaukee chapter, and your fellow EWI sisters, exemplify this vision every day. What is your ‘EWI Why’ and how can you make a difference or inspire someone today? If you have not done so already, check your inbox for the invitation to the February meeting. Take a minute or three and complete your registration today. Have you invited a guest? This is a great month to introduce a friend or professional associate to our chapter! Roses are red; Violets are blue. Heartfelt and Handmade is fun for our chapter; And we can’t wait to see you! January 7, 2020A long, overdue thank you ……….

Dear fellow representatives,

I had to cancel attending the October meeting at the last minute, was unable to make the Novembermeeting, so at the December meeting, Jen handed me a gift bag with a large box containing yourletters and notes. I took this home with me. Before going to bed that night, I sat at the dining roomtable and read all the letters and notes. My reaction—awed and definitely overwhelmed!

My plan was to thank you personally at tonight’s EWI meeting. However, a small health problem hascaused me to again cancel coming to a meeting and I feel this thank you is long overdue.

Those letters and notes were such a kind, loving and thoughtful gesture—I’m truly grateful. Thank yousounds so “run-of-the-mill”, but I say it with lots of love and gratitude. I want you all to know that I trulyappreciate your thoughtfulness and appreciate the friendship of each and every one of you.

Many, many thanks to all of you.

Ellen Aumann

EWI Book CornerEWI Book CornerOur most commonly held formula for success is broken.

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be moresuccessful, and if we are more successful, then we'll be happy. Ifwe can just find that great job, win that next promotion, losethose five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries inthe field of positive psychology have shown that this formula isactually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other wayaround.

When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn't just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedlyborne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizationsaround the globe.

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, who spent over adecade living, researching, and lecturing at Harvard University, draws on his own research--including one of the largest studies ofhappiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies likeUBS and KPMG--to fix this broken formula. Using stories and casestudies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains tobecome more positive in order to gain a competitive edge atwork.

Isolating seven practical, actionable principles that have beentried and tested everywhere from classrooms to boardrooms, stretching from Argentina to Zimbabwe, he shows us how we cancapitalize on the Happiness Advantage to improve ourperformance and maximize our potential.
