Cuando una personadecida entrar al Santuario debeestar consciente que ese día sele va notificar a migración.ICE debe seguir las políticasdel gobierno federal de evitarlas acciones de fuerzas de laley en escuelas, hospitales,sitios de prácticas religiosas,casas funerarias, capillas debodas y en demostracionespúblicas como marchas oprotestas. Además se crearáuna campaña para dar aconocer a la comunidad, lasituación de la personaprotegida para buscar la unióny luchar por sus derechos, altiempo que se demuestran lasinjusticias del sistema roto demigración. Todo esto con elfin de buscar una resoluciónlegal que pueda salvar a laspersonas de la deportación.

“No es tenerlos encerradosen el Santuario hasta quemueran de aburrimiento. Esimportante saber qué al pedirnuestro apoyo, en esemomento se convertirá en unapersona pública, la van aquerer entrevistar y los demásvan a saber sobre ella. Si

alguien no está preparado paraeste tipo de situación, entoncesno podemos hacer nada”,comentó Castañeda.

Aunque las instalacionesdel Santuario en Cristo Reyson muy modestas, un cuartocon una ducha y una pequeñacocina, se le dará todo el apoyoa quien lo necesite. Estar en unSantuario es algo difícil ya quepueden pasar meses para teneruna resolución.

Actualmente hay una fa-milia que lleva varios meses enla iglesia Santuario CentralUnited Methodist de Detroit,el matrimonio es de Albania ytienen dos hijos, uno de 24años, estudiante DACA quevive en la Universidad deMichigan; otro de 15 años,ciudadano americano, vivecon ellos y estudia la escuelapreparatoria.

La comunidad de la iglesiametodista se organiza pararealizar rondas y llevar al jovena la escuela preparatoria,regresarlo a la iglesia y por latarde llevarlo a sus prácticas defutbol. Mientras otrosmiembros de la iglesia seorganizan para hacerles lacompra y llevar a la señora almédico ya que está

gravemente enferma deesclerosis múltiple. Lafamilia busco refugio allíen un último esfuerzopara salvar al padre deuna orden dedeportación. “Es unesfuerzo muy grandeque se está haciendo ysabemos que lo mismoviviremos cuando

alguien entre a Cristo Rey”,informó Oscar.

Por otra parte, enKalamazoo también la IglesiaFirst Congregational esSantuario y ahí se encuentraen este momento SaheedaPerveen Nadeem, quien tiene62 años y decidió pedirprotección para evitar serdeportada a Pakistán. The announcement fol-lowed the board meeting.Speakers included Scott J.Savage (president of theBoard of Park Commission-ers) and Joe Napoli (presi-dent of the board of the newlyrelaunched Metroparks To-ledo Foundation).

About the TreehouseVillage

Savage announced plansto build the Treehouse Vil-lage at the new Beach RidgeArea at Oak Openings. TheVillage will open next yearand include:

• A six-person treehouse• A four-person treehouse• Two, two-person

treehouses• Three tent/hammock

platforms for camping in thetrees

• A common treehousewith seating for up to 49people

• And a crow’s nest linkedto the common treehouse bya canopy walk

The four privatetreehouses and tent platformswill be available to rent forovernight stays, while thecommon treehouse will beavailable to rent for daytimeuse by groups.

The Metroparks Con-struction Crew is building

the treehouse village, whichwas designed by NelsonTreehouse and Supply, thecompany featured in the Ani-mal Planet TV series“Treehouse Masters.” Nelsonwas also involved with the ini-tial construction of phase 1.

“We’re thrilled to reportthat no other park system inthe country will have atreehouse village inspiredand designed by TreehouseMasters,” Mr. Savage said.“It is yet another example ofthe forward thinking and in-novation that makesMetroparks Toledo one of thetop park systems in the coun-try. About the CampaignNapoli announced the lead

donors who have already madesubstantial financial contribu-tions. Because of the supportfrom the foundation and leaddonors, Metroparks has begunconstructing phase 1, whichincludes the commontreehouse, crow’s nest and atower that will support a cablesuspension bridge. The cam-paign will raise additionalfunds for phase 2, which in-cludes the overnighttreehouses.

“The purpose of the Foun-dation is to raise resources andawareness to support the manygreat things Metroparks bringsto our community,” Mr. Napolisaid. “The Treehouse Villageis our first major project, andI’m pleased to announce thatwe are well on our way to mak-ing this unique new experi-

Creating a DestinationThe Treehouse Village

will be part of the 420-acreBeach Ridge Area, whichMetroparks acquired be-tween 2013 and 2015. Thearea also includes a just-com-pleted, 12-mile mountainbike trail built largely byvolunteers; Metroparks sec-ond FitPark, an outdoor fit-ness area sponsored by MercyHealth; and a new multi-usefacility with a bicycle themethat also houses restroomsand showers to servicetreehouse guests.

Oak Openings alreadyoffers two campgrounds, tworentable cottages, two lakesfor fishing and kayaking, aswell as trails for hiking, cy-cling and horseback riding.

“In recent years, we haveadded many compelling newways for people to connectwith the out-of-doors, fromnew parks and trails to a 3Darchery course and campingon a Maumee River island,”said Dave Zenk, MetroparksToledo executive director.“These experiences, alongwith the Treehouse Village,add to our region’s growingreputation as a great place tolive, work and play.”

Zenk added that revenuefrom rentals will pay for theoperational costs of theTreehouses, as well as out-reach efforts to engage thecommunity. For example,20 percent of the time, thecommon treehouse will beused for public programs,giving everyone the oppor-tunity to experience theunique facility.

Guerrero will share herstory with the University ofMichigan community duringthe upcoming Diversity, Eq-uity and Inclusion Summit.She will speak at a commu-nity assembly and discussionfrom 9-10:30 a.m. on Mon-day, Oct. 8, 2018 at the PowerCenter in Ann Arbor.

The discussion will bemoderated by author andPulitzer Prize-winning jour-nalist Leonard Pitts Jr. Tick-ets are not required for en-trance, and seating will be ona first-come, first-served ba-sis.

As she details in her mem-oir, “In the Country We Love:My Family Divided,” and herchildren’s book, “My FamilyDivided,” Guerrero’s parentswere deported to Colombiawhen she was 14 years old. Tothis day, they have not beenable to rejoin her in the UnitedStates.

“It impacted me greatly,the separation of my family,”Guerrero said. “Now we havesuch a great visibility withthe children separated fromtheir families at the borderand what that does to a fam-ily, what that does to a child.It stunts a child’s growth.”

She says she publiclyshared her own family’s his-tory amid the anti-immigrantrhetoric during the last presi-dential election cycle.

“It’s something that I hadlived with for so long and Iwas ashamed of for so long,”Guerrero said. “The minutethat I started to get work as anactor, (I was) asked a lot ofpersonal questions. I justthought it would be a greattime to liberate myself fromthat shame and actually dis-cuss issues that really mat-tered.”

When it comes to broadlyimproving the U.S. immigra-tion system, Guerrero notedthe need for a path to citizen-ship for immigrants alreadyliving in the United States,updates to the visa system,broad decriminalization andthe reunification of families.

On college campuses,Guerrero said, faculty and staffcan better support undocu-mented students or studentswhose lives have beentouched by immigration byopenly discussing the issue

should read up or learn up onthe challenges that the immi-grant community faces, es-pecially immigrant stu-dents,” Guerrero said. “And Ithink that there should be acenter where these studentscan go for help and informa-tion.”

At some schools she vis-its, she said, students tell hera lot of teachers don’t makeimmigration a positive topic,or that the issue is a taboo oneto discuss.

“That should not be,”Guerrero said. “It is part ofour American history. It’ssomething that we shouldopenly talk about, and cer-tainly humanize and decrimi-nalize. And so it starts in theclassrooms. If our teachersare positive about the topicand are open about it, thenthe rest of the student bodywill begin to.”

As U-M continues with ayears-long process to en-hance diversity, equity andinclusion on campus,Guerrero emphasized theimportance of diversifyingfaculty, staff and studentranks in order for higher edu-cation institutions to reachthese outcomes.

“We still have very lowpercentages of people of colorgoing and graduating fromhigher education,” Guerrerosaid, adding that diversityshould be a goal of highereducation institutions.

“Until we have a systemin place that is fair and equal,then that should be a majorcomponent of your mission,”she said. “Especially whenwe’re talking about equalityand justice for all — not justin schools but in our countryand our society — then wheredoes that all begin? That startsin schools.”

As reflected in her careerchoices, Guerrero said she de-cided to pursue acting be-cause she wanted to tell sto-ries that reflected her experi-ence and her community’sexperience, which she didn’tsee represented.

It’s a calling she hopes tocontinue in the future.

“I’m out here because Iwant to represent my com-munity and I want others thatlook like me or have comefrom a similar situation orhave a similar background tobe able to relate,” she said. “Ihope to open doors for otherpeople who also are inter-ested in this medium, whoalso want to tell stories thatreflect who we are and helpour communities grow.”
