In the persuit of clean mechanical aestheticswe seek to explore the basicexpression of life on a motorbike. We do notnecessarily focus on extremeperformance, flashy colours or aerodynamics,but seek to build motorcycleswith individual styling and an dynamicdriving experience that relates tothe style of each motorcycle.

We love Japanese, British, Italian, Americanmotorcycles.Nearly all the manufactureres have modelsthat would make great Monkee bikes.We don’ t need legendary models to buildlegendary motorcycles. We choose ourbuilding blocks based on original framedesign and engine configuration andevery creation rolling out of our garage isbuilt from these key elements withlove and affection. We have been buildingcustomized motorcycles for the pastten years, the last two as the Wrenchmonkees.Based in Copenhagen we buildunique motorcycles for our clients and sincewe want our bikes to be used weoffer different services depending on therules and regulations in the countrythey live in. El fotógrafo norteamericano Hugh Holland (Kentucky, 1942) no pudodetener el tiempo, pero sí los movimientos. En tres años, logró capturar laesencia desfachatada de los Z-Boys, skaters que se deslizaban enpiscinas vacías, apurados por el futuro, sin miedo y sin límites. Ademásdejó, sin planteárselo, un documento histórico que da cuenta de los iniciosde este deporte y el auge y la caída de algunos de los chicos que lograronpatinar verticalmente.

Entre 1975 y 1978 hubo un cambio radical en el mundo del skate. Una innovaciónque fue determinante para los grandes auspiciadores, los campeonatos mundiales,los juegos de Play Station o el mega mediático skater Tony Hawk apareciendo enlos realities de MTV. Porque en tan sólo tres años surgieron tipos increíbles,haciendo piruetas temerarias para la época. Skaters pioneros como Jay Adams oStacy Peralta; sin marcas, cascos, ni rodilleras. Jóvenes entusiastas que patinabancon el pelo suelto, entre chicas bronceadas suavemente por la calidez del sol deLos Angeles. Tipos que crearon el verdadero skate, aquél que rompió con loimaginable y levantó del suelo los cuerpos livianos de estos jóvenes deportistas. Elfotógrafo Hugh Holland, quien después se dedicaría a viajar y tomar fotos, estuvoahí y fue capaz de captar lo que estaba pasando. No sólo saltos. No sólo deporte.Había más. Había estética, rebeldía y chicos fotogénicos a los cuales les gustabahacer alarde de sus capacidades.

Por esos años había una sequía terrible en California. Se podía ver las piscinasvacías y los tubos de drenaje sin agua. Una tarde cualquiera, en este desérticopanorama, Hugh Holland manejaba su auto por Laurel Canyon Road, hasta que depronto algo llamó su atención. Eran chicos patinando sobre esas piscinas y tubos.Se bajó de su automóvil y sin un mayor conocimiento de la cámara que cargaba,fotografió a estos muchachos, impresionado por lo que él da en llamar “unaespecie de ballet vertical”. Fue así como comenzó a cazar la inocencia y el espíritulibre de un grupo de patinadores de entre 13 y 19 años llamado Z-Boys, quienesfueron los más importantes representates del skate de la época y que dictaron lapauta para todo lo que vendría después.

Luego de verlos y fotografiarlos esa tarde, Holland supo que “estaba en medio dealgo bueno” y que las posibilidades fotográficas serían infinitas. Por eso es que sequedó entre ellos durante tres años, tiempo en el que pudo ver cómo el skate seprofesionalizó y cambió profundamente; cómo niños inocentes que se juntaban,reían y disfrutaban de manera simple, de a poco se transformaron en una fuertemoda, fueron auspiciados por las grandes marcas y terminaron consumidos poresta vorágine. Entre los más recordados se encuentra Jay Adams, que, paraHolland, era uno de los mayores personajes de la escena. Adams fue uno de losmejores, pero terminó consumido por las fiestas, las drogas y detenido eninumerables ocasiones por problemas con estupefacientes.

OZUMA KANAME

Born in Niigata, Japan in 1939, Ozuma Kaname beganstudying traditionalJapanese painting under his uncle, artist Sakai Soushi, froma young age.Moving to Tokyo at the age of 18, he trained as an art dealerwhile workingat a printing company. Afterwards, he moved on to thepublishing industrywhere he illustrated tattoos. The majority of his workcontinues to betattoo-related along with other traditional Japanese themes;and oftenserves as a source of inspiration for master tattooistHoriyoshi III, whoseclients in turn, are often depicted in Ozuma's paintings.
