Thanks for choosing the first library in our Forgotten Voices Series: “Francesca”.

The singer, Francesca Genco, is a highly gifted female alto singer covering a variety of vocaltextures from soft to powerful, crying and evocative type of vocals. Francesca has been singingand chanting for over 20 years and is one of the most respected shamanistic sound healers inthe world. Her repertoire of singing styles ranging from classical western to balkan and middle-

eastern song traditions. The vocal library is made from over 10 hours of phrases divided intological categories (ex. Chanting, Flute-Singing, Lullaby, Powerful, Slow Dark Evocative etc) and bysophisticated editing and programming. The programming allows user to sculpt- and morphphrases by adjusting the mod-wheel and pitch bender. The mod-wheel controls the samplestarting point, so users can trigger off-set anywhere they want in the phrases. The pitch benderallows you to time-stretch/compress the phrase. The combination between sample off-setcontrol and time-stretch/compression allows users to seamlessly morph different phrasestogether, which brings endless possibilities for creating new phrases. In addition Francescacontains a bonus set of vocal ambiences (Kontakt 3 only ) made by Steven Tavaglione (Wall-E,

American Beauty, CSI, Supernatural and 100s other movies/shows/games).

INSTALLATION

We Use Winrar (version 3.80 or later) or other compatible program

to un-compress the “Tonehammer_Francesca.rar” file into its own

folder in your sample library directory. Make sure to preserve the

included folder structure. This is usually done by selecting the “extract

to'...” option in Winrar or UnrarX.

You should now be able to open and play the .nki files. Be aware thatall of our .nki files are compatible with full retail versions of Kontakt 2(version 2.2.4 or later) or Kontakt 3 (version 3.0 or later) only.

Note: Free Kompakt Players and Kontakt Players that come bundledwith DAW software, hardware or other sample libraries won't beable to load ours or any other instrument library that didn't originallycome bundled with it. We're sorry, but it's the way Kontakt andKompakt Players work by design. However, since our wave directoriesare open, you can translate the patches into whatever format youlike. There are a few conversion utilities available that can make thetranslation process much easier, such as as CDXtract. Just make sure

you don't share them with others without asking. Each user mustpurchase their own copy of this instrument from Tonehammer.

ABOUT FRANCESCA GENCO

Francesca Genco is a singer, sound healer, interdisciplinary artist and teacher. She has been singing and playing

music since she was a wee tot. From the age of 6, her parents would often find her writing songs at the pianoon little pieces of paper with a red pencil. Being quite prolific, she would sometimes write up to 7 songs aday!

It is her great pleasure to create music with both professional musicians and those who simply love singing andplaying with the cosmos and all beings in it. She has been leading improvisational chanting and sound healingcircles and embodied singing workshops for 10 years. Francesca is the founder of Song of the Body, whichoffers classes, workshops and retreats in sound healing, yoga and creative expression through voice, rhythm andmovement.

She has received several grants for her projects and performances, including a grant from the San FranciscoFoundation in 1996 to create and lead GIRLS RULE!, an arts-based empowerment group for teenaged girls. She

was also a co-founder of the Philadelphia Contact Improvisation Dance Festival, which she co-directed withLeah Stein for 3 years.

Her private practice is in Berkeley, CA. She also facilitates workshops and private sessions on the East Coastand in Europe.

ABOUT PROGRAMMING

The Forgotten Voices: “Francesca” library contains two sophisticated ways of manipulating the phrases. Allpatches have specific mod-wheel and pitch-bender control, which is marked by the MW and TS names in thefiles. The Modwheel (MW) controls the sample off-set, so the user can start playing anywhere in the phrasebased on position of the modwheel. This feature is important, since many of the phrases are 15-20 secondslong and often you will want to “cut” into the phrase to sculpt it properly. The Pitch-Bender is associated totime-stretching (TS), which allows the user to decrease/increase the time of the phrase. The combinationbetween sample off-set and time-stretching gives great command over the phrase and users will literally beallowed to sculpt millions of combinations from the +850 phrases in the library. It can take a little getting

used to for new users, but once you get a feel for it - its an incredibly powerful combination for phrasecontrol.

The library also contains additional Bonus of Vocal Ambiences (Kontakt 3 only ), which were specificallydesigned for Kontakt 3 functionalities. The ambiences were designed by Steven Tavaglione - who is one of themost sought after studio musicians and ambient music designer in LA. He worked with Thomas Newman onWall-E, American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption and has done ambient music on CSI, Supernatural and over100 other shows/games.

FLUTE_SINGING_MW_TS.NKIFlute Singing is a specific way of whistling and singing at the same time. The voice becomes somewherebetween a flute and a human vocal with a very airy quality to it. It is pure otherworld and somewhere betweenextremely pleasing and with an underlying tone of haunting memories.

FX_AND_ATONAL_MW_TS.NKIThis patch contains a variety of vocal warm-up sounds (predominantly: Brrrrrr) and a set of haunting,atonal drony type of looped vocals. The atonal sets were made by the singing softly changing pitchslightly to get off-note and generate a haunting, 2001ish, eerie mini-choir feel.

LONELY_LULLABY_MW_TS.NKIThe lonely lullaby patch is in the gray area between beauty and disturbia. Imagine a mother who haslost her child. Gently sitting, waving back and forth softly singing for a plastic doll in her hands. Thepatch has multiple applications, but there is a sense of dark beauty to it.

PLAYFUL_CHANTING_MW_TS_1.NKIThis patch contains a variety of phrases with a lively, playful quality to them. They are not necessarilyhappy, but have enough tonal variation to project some optimism, but always with a tad of darknessand sadness to them. POWERFUL_1_MW_TS.NKIThis patch contains the most powerful (forte) vocals in the library. Francesca is literally singing at hermaximum volume. The sounds have a highly ethnic, atonal nature, crying, burning nature and great for“break-through” type of scoring - marking of a significant event.
