Tell them the 3 different farms we are going to work on: vegetable, livestock, dairy & that we have to collect different things from the farms & transport them safely to the role play supermarket where we have to sort the produce into the correctly labelled boxes, ready to sell. • Split the children into 3 groups and rotate around each: • - Vegetable farm: Use the tools to dig up a carrot or potato from underneath the soil, wash it in a bucket of water, then transport it to the ‘supermarket’ & place into the correct labelled box. • - Dairy farm: Milk the model cow & collect ‘milk’ in milk bottle, collect an egg from under a hen (picture!), transport both to the ‘supermarket’ & place into the correct labelled box. • Livestock farm: Transport either a cow or pig (Picture) by pretending to carry it on a lorry & take it to a factory, exchange it for a burger/ sausage (Place these in ziplock see through bags & explain the children are not to open them). Session Outline •Explain that we have farms because they help to produce the food we eat. Explain that there are different types of farms which produce different things. Tell them the 3 different farms we are going to work on: vegetable, livestock, dairy & that we have to collect different things from the farms & transport them safely to the role play supermarket where we have to sort the produce into the correctly labelled boxes, ready to sell.

• Split the children into 3 groups and rotate around each: • - Vegetable farm: Use the tools to dig up a carrot or potato from

underneath the soil, wash it in a bucket of water, then transport it to the ‘supermarket’ & place into the correct labelled box.

Transport it to the ‘supermarket’ & place into the correct labelled box.

Differentiation: HA- Describe the 3 different farms and produce we get for each. Explain how the food changes once cooked. LA- Can say where we get our milk, eggs, vegetables and meat from. Extension: Can the children play role play supermarkets and buy and sell produce to each other using toy money?

Print out and laminate enough cows/ pigs so each child has one livestock animal. Build a ‘mini-pretend field’ and put the cow/ pig pictures inside. Children pick either a pig or cow and then take them on their livestock lorry to the ‘factory’ where they

exchange their cow for a beef burger, or pig for a pork sausage (in a ziplock bag). They can then transport these carefully to the supermarket. (I have found using real, uncooked meat a great learning experience for the children as they often do not

see meat in this form. The fact the meat is in zip-locked bags means it’s not an issue for the vegetarian children, although you could give them a choice whether to handle the bags or not.)
