Aim of the ActivityAim of the Activity

The aim of this English activity is to:

• Help children to understand how the target language is used in everyday situations, for example, in a restaurant or a shop in the target language country;

•Reinforce pupils´ understanding of the conditional tense;

• Use real-life resources, e.g. food and drinks, in order to make the role play activity seem less staged;

• Teach children how to ask for things and make requests in a polite manner, using the conditional tense;

• To make children aware of the cuisine of other countries and cultures and allow them to taste them.

Structure of the role play Structure of the role play situationsituation

The children work in groups of three of four. Each child is assigned a role, for example, there will be one waiter or waitress and the remaining pupils will be the customers who come to the restaurant.

Over a period of time, the children have studied the role play dialogues in order to understand how language and registers are used in different social situations.

The children are also aware of the types of body language which should be used in the situation and how to make people feel welcome.

Dawn the Language Assistant helps the children, in groups of three or four, with intonation and pronunciation.

Each group of pupils created a unique name for their restaurant and made colourful posters.

Recipes for the DishesShepherd´s Pie

Ingredients: PotatoesOnionesCarrotsPeasMinced lambCheese

Method:

First chop potatoes and boil in a pot until they are soft. Add butter to the potatoes.

In a pan with olive oil, fry onions, carrots and meat. Add peas and 100ml of water. Cook for 25minutes.

Put the mixture into a large dish. Put the mashed potato on top and then add grated cheese to the top and put in the oven until it is crispy.

Serve.

Baked Potato filled with Tuna and Cheese

Ingredients: Large potatoesOnionTunaMayonnaiseCheeseButter

Method:

Wash potatoes in cold water. Drizzle with olive oil and rub with salt.Place the potatoes in the oven for 1 hour or until they are soft throughout.

For the tuna mixture, place tuna in a bowl. Chop an onion into small pieces and mix together. Add mayonnaise.

Cut open the potatoes and add butter and mix it into the potato. Add the tuna mixture and cover with cheese.

Serve.
