Toronto’s spectacular Olympic Waterfront plan guaranteesOlympic Games and Paralympic Games that are brilliant, accessible, easy to experience and inspiring.
Competition venues for 89% of Olympic sports are located within 6 km – 10 minutes – of the Olympic Village, Olympic Stadium, downtown Toronto and main Olympic hotel area. Members of theOlympic Family, media, spectators and others will be able to walkto the majority of events along a beautiful waterfront OlympicPromenade surrounded by natural wonders, and the sights andsounds of the world’s great cultures in Toronto, the “City of Nations”.
Toronto’s Olympic Waterfront plan encompasses 35 state-of-the-artcompetition venues. Of these, 74% are already built, ready andapproved by the respective International Federations. Toronto’sexisting venues infrastructure employs the newest in technology andis designed to maximize media and broadcast coverage. All newcompetition venues will be built on government-owned land andwill incorporate world-leading technology, designed withextraordinary precision and care. In either case, a contract has beensigned with the venue or landowner for its exclusive use, and allparties recognize the requirements of the IOC and InternationalFederations for clean advertising, exemplary and warm hospitalityand outstanding spectator seating.
Only three principal sport venues need to be built for the 2008Olympic Games: the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Aquatic Centreand Olympic Velodrome and Multi-Sport Centre. Each of thesevenues will provide a significant and lasting legacy for sport in Canadaby providing world-class facilities for training and hosting futurenational and international competitions. Similar to the legacy left toBarcelona, these venues will join with the Olympic Village as theOlympic Games’ legacy to Toronto’s breathtaking andunprecedented waterfront redevelopment.
The Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid Corporation has also assembled ateam of experienced, enthusiastic, multilingual and committedexperts, staff, athlete advisors and more than 60,000 volunteers toensure the planning, design and execution of the 2008 OlympicGames are the best ever. Within the past decade, Canada has hostedmany Olympic Qualifier or World Championship events inOlympic sports. This has given Canadians a wealth of experiencethat is reflected in the composition of our team. Key individuals
from the 1999 Pan American Games, 1994 CommonwealthGames, 1993 World University Games, 1976 Olympic Games,1976 Paralympics Games hosted by Toronto and many otherinternational sport events, have participated in developing Toronto’sOlympic Waterfront plan. The Canadian Olympic Association andall National Sports Organizations have also contributed theirknowledge, experience and resources to the development and designof Toronto’s plan. These groups will continue to play leadershiproles in the Toronto OCOG if our city is given the honour ofhosting the 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. In addition, more than 60,000 Canadians have already pledged to volunteertheir time and enthusiasm to help host the 2008 Olympic Games.
Conceived by and designed with athletes for athletes, the proposalfor Toronto’s Olympic Village and Paralympic Village demonstratesan understanding of the diverse interests and needs of the world’sbest athletes. Toronto promises an outstanding and welcomingOlympic Village and Paralympic Village, featuring the excitementand technology of a cosmopolitan city, the tastes and sounds of theworld’s great cultures, and the serenity of a private community withabundant green spaces, nature trails and warm sandy beaches, all forthe exclusive use of the athletes competing in the 2008 OlympicGames. All athletes – including for the first time, football athletes –will celebrate the Olympic Games in a single Olympic Village.
Residential units in the Olympic Village have been designed forcomfort, security and convenience. Lofts and rowhouses overlookpathways and gardens, with 24-hour shuttle service convenient toevery residence. The Olympic Village will also feature a pool, gymnasiumand track for athletes to enjoy within the security of the Village.
The Olympic Village is the cornerstone of a new residentialdevelopment to be built on the shores of Lake Ontario, minutesfrom downtown Toronto. Restoration of this former industrial sitewill create a model waterfront community and a lasting legacy ofthe Olympic Movement in Toronto.
The finest in athlete inspired competition venues and accommodation, the expertise, enthusiasm and commitment of more than 60,000Canadians, and the values and ideals that have shaped our Olympicplan – together these form the foundation that guarantees greatsuccess for the 2008 Olympic Games in Toronto.

Canada has a history of successfully staging major internationalgames and sports events. The Toronto OCOG will draw upon thevast experience attained through the operation of these events byrecruiting the key individuals involved. Additionally, all NationalSport Organizations will be asked to identify experts to participatein the operation of their sport at the Olympic Games. Emphasis willbe placed on selecting individuals who have Olympic and majorevent experience. The Canadian Olympic Association will assist inidentifying personnel who have the ability and experience tomanage critical tasks associated with the operation of the OlympicGames.
Volunteer recruitment will occur through the national andprovincial sport federations familiar with the requirements for theirrespective sport, as well as through a national campaign designed totake advantage of the tremendous excitement that Canadians feeltowards the hosting of the Olympic Games.
Since 1998, a great deal of activity has already taken place in thearea of recruiting sports organization personnel:
• TO-2008’s Sport and Venues committee, an extensive committeewith 29 working groups, one for each of the Olympic sports andone for the Paralympic Games, is responsible for identifyingcompetition and training venues and legacy requirements for theOlympic Games. Each working group is comprised of experts fromthe respective sport, as well as significant athlete and coachrepresentation.
• Each National Sport Federation has submitted a list of expertpersonnel and the volunteer recruitment and training requirements.
• The Canadian Olympic Association has representation on allcommittees associated with Toronto’s bid and has played asignificant role in the recruitment of the experts who havecontributed greatly to the bid.
• More than 60,000 volunteers have already signed up in theToronto area alone to contribute to Toronto’s hosting of the 2008Olympic Games.
