Celebrating Porsche success

It is an exciting time for our Porsche Flagship dealership. In this edition of Torque magazine, we celebrate Porsche’s continued Le Mans success along with our recent PCM Golf Day at Huntingdale.

There is a strong appetite for golf amongst our customer base, which was quickly proven by the swift uptake of invites from our owners with fifty percent of the card being filled within the first four hours after the invite was issued.

The Cayman GTS was recently acknowledged as Australia’s Best Driver’s Car by Motoring.com.au. Up against fifteen cars, with each vehicle covering 2,500kms over six days on the road, track and drag strip, the car was a stand out. Visit the showroom to see the awarded model on display.

Porsche marks another milestone in Motorsport history with its 17th overall victory at Le Mans, in a historic one-two finish.

We also meet PCM customer Alison Belot and share her driving passion for her beloved Porsche 911.

I am pleased to report that our renovations are progressing. Major improvements have been made in our service and motorsport workshop area since our last edition, tiling has commenced in our workshop area and additional hoists have been fitted in the new expanded workshop area.

I hope you enjoy our Winter edition!

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE ARE PLEASED TO WELCOME NEW MEMBERS TO OUR EXPANDING TEAM.Phil ChanPhil Chan joined the PCM sales team in February this year. Phil has worked in the luxury automotive market for the past 10 years and is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. The thing he loves about PCM, is not only meeting and establishing new networks with his customers, but the genuine passion and enthusiasm that Porsche customers bring to the table, something that is a clear point of difference when reflecting on previous automotive experience.

Phil is a keen tennis player away from work and lists Boris Becker as his childhood sports star. If he wasn’t in automotive he in fact would most likely be a tennis player!

His favourite car in the Porsche range would be the 911 GTS. Away from work, Phil enjoys spending time with his wife and two children who are aged three and six.

Kate HolcombeKate Holcombe joined PCM in March this year in the role of Marketing Manager. Prior to joining the Management team, Kate has held marketing roles across various industries: health, tourism, education, professional services and automotive. She holds a Bachelor of Management and a Masters in Communication.

She lists the Mt Cotton track day as a clear highlight of her time at PCM to date and her favourite Porsche that she has driven so far has been the Cayman GTS. Away from work Kate is a keen tennis player and hopes to find more time to enjoy her golf, when the weather warms up!

Having grown up in Regional Victoria, she also loves returning home to the beautiful coastal village of Port Fairy, which if taking the scenic option via the Great Ocean Road, is a perfect driving route for Porsche drivers.

Evan WangEvan Wang joined the PCM sales team in April this year and is fluent in English and Mandarin. He joins us from another German automotive brand and has spent many years previously selling luxury watches, Rolex, Patek and Cartier and is always keen to discuss cars and watches with his customers, a perfect match!

Since joining PCM he has developed a fond appetite for the Cayman GTS and found the track day with Porsche Sport Driving School at Mount Cotton an eye opener! It was the perfect opportunity to experience the entire Porsche model range and even fine tune his driving skills to improve his track times.

Away from work Evan is a keen badminton player and could easily find his feet in the media industry as a sound recorder if he wasn’t in automotive.

L-R Phil, Kate and Evan

On Monday 15 June, 58 PCM owners participated in our 2015 Golf Day.

Huntingdale, one of Melbourne’s finest sandbelt golf courses, was the perfect setting for a memorable afternoon of golf.

With a line up of nine vehicles, including the recently awarded Cayman GTS, the range was proudly on display surrounding the practice areas and the clubhouse.

The weather proved to be on our side, with near perfect conditions for an afternoon of Ambrose.

With a beat-the-pro competition on the 12th hole, and nearest the pin challenges on the 3rd and 15th holes, friendly competition soon broke out.

A special mention and thank you to our prizing partners for the day: Henry Bucks, Bockers & Pony, ES Lifestyle Concierge Services, Porsche Financial Services and Huntingdale Golf Club.

We congratulate all attendees on their participation!

No other brand has won what is the world’s toughest endurance race so many times.

It was Porsche car number 19, driven by Earl Bamber (NZ), Nico Hülkenberg (GER) and Nick Tandy (GB) which crossed the line in first, followed by car number 17 driven by Timo Bernhard (GER), Brendon Hartley (NZ) and Mark Webber (AUS). Romain Dumas (FR), Neel Jani (CH) and Marc Lieb (GER) brought home the third Porsche in fifth.

Porsche only marked its return to the top level of endurance racing in 2014, after being attracted by new efficiency regulations, after which the 919 Hybrid was developed at the Porsche Research Centre in Weissach.

Woldgang Hatz, Member of Board for research and development Porsche AG, said: ‘’A one-two finish in what is only our second year is an amazing reward for the guts of our engineers regarding the 919 Hybrid’s concept, and the relentless efforts of our 230 team members’’.

LE MANS 2015MISSION ACCOMPLISHEDWith a perfect one-two finish, Porsche has written itself into the history books with its 17th overall Le Mans victory, at the 83rd running of the famous 24-hour race.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid has an innovative, downsizing turbo engine coupled with two energy recovery systems, which works together to create a powertrain delivering approximately 1,000 HP. The vehicle works as a racing laboratory with the technology developed to end up in future road going sports cars, as exhibited by the 918 Spyder.

Interesting facts and figures from the race: – The winning team completed 395 laps (5,382,82 kilometres).

– The average speed of the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid was 224.2 km/h

– The highest top speed of a Porsche 919 Hybrid in the race was 340.2 km/h and done by Mark Webber in car number 17.

– The Porsche 919 Hybrid recuperated and used 2,22 kWh (8 megajoule) per lap. If it was a power plant, a family home could be supplied with electricity for three months.

COMMUNITY

Three days were recently enjoyed at one of Australia’s best race tracks, Sandown International Raceway.

It was one of our biggest turn outs in years and we can’t wait to see our customers back on track at The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in November.

The ability to realise your Porsche’s true potential whilst being guided by our expert instructors is something we encourage all Porsche owners to experience and we are sure our recent attendees can attest to this.

From flying sideways around the skid pan, to going flat out through the famous Sandown turns, to experiencing the full force of an ABS emergency stop, there was never a dull moment.

Photos and videos from the day are available on our Porsche Centre Melbourne Facebook page.

Don’t miss out on these Phillip Island Track Days.

The Cayman range will soon expand to four models when the Cayman GT4 arrives in September, joining the Cayman GTS, Cayman S and Cayman.

Contact Porsche Centre Melbourne today for more information on the GTS and the Cayman model line-up.

Motoring.com.au has awarded the mid-engine Porsche with its ultimate accolade in their inaugural Australia’s Best Driver’s Car super test.

The Cayman GTS was put up against fifteen cars, ranging from $25,000 to $250,000, with each covering 2,500kms over six days on road, track and drag strip.

With testing taking place in Tasmania on some of the best driving roads in Australia; it was unanimously crowned winner by sixteen of Australia’s best motoring road testers.

“Every judge that scored the Cayman GTS gave it at least six five-out-of-fives... no other car came close’’ says motoring.com.au Editor-In-Chief, Mike Sinclair.

“Tactile, communicative and eager, in the best tradition of great driver’s cars. Even in Tasmania’s wildest weather the inner brilliance of the GTS shone through’’ Sinclair added.

Revisited and intensified with purism as the sum of its parts, the Cayman GTS delivers an unadulterated driving experience and sets a benchmark for what is to be considered a true drivers car.

The GTS comes standard with Sports Chrono Package including dynamic gearbox mounts, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Sports Exhaust, 20’’ Carrera S Alloys, Bi-Xenon headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PLDS), Sports Seats Plus (2-way, electric), Roof lining in Alcantara and Sport Design Steering Wheel.

TRADITION OF GREAT DRIVER’S CARS …

Page 16: Torque Winter 2015

From being ‘knee high to a grasshopper’ on her parents’ farm, Alison Belot’s love affair with driving began very early and shows no sign of abating.

At age 16 or 17 Alison Belot fell in love with the look of the iconic Porsche 911. Whilst she always dreamed of owning one she never expected to have the opportunity, her modest ambition being to perhaps “get to experience a 911 as a passenger”. With a stellar career well established she found herself in the position of being able to realise her childhood dream. Alison settled first on a Boxster S (“to get the whole Porsche dream out of her system”) which she enjoyed for several years, before recently purchasing her sparkling blue 991 series Carrera S.

Alison is absolutely smitten with her Porsche and the whole Porsche experience, from the great service and support from PCM to enjoying Porsche Club Victoria events and private tours with other Porsche enthusiasts. She proudly proclaimed her future choices will only ever be Porsche models.

Growing up on farms in the Cottlesbridge/Kinglake district Alison can recall being fascinated with all the vehicles on the family farm, from tractors to old Land Rovers and following in her older brother’s footsteps learned to drive all of these vehicles. Then began a lifelong interest in driving, especially high-performance sports cars.

To understand Alison’s passion is to recall an early shopping experience at age six or seven when, under orders from her mother to her older brother Eric, she was escorted to

purchase a doll with money given to her on her birthday. When the children returned some time later with a little red tip-truck (complete with opening doors, tilt tray and movable steering wheel) their mother was aghast. After admonishing Eric, believing it was he who had chosen the gift and not Alison, she marched them back to the toy store to exchange the truck for a doll, only for the salesperson to explain that it was indeed Alison who absolutely insisted on buying the toy truck. From that point dolls were out and trucks (and cars) were in. Alison kept that first toy truck this whole time before recently discovering (to her horror) that her father had thrown it out as it was so rusted and worn out.

Alison has moved into a senior management role at BHP Billiton, a position that has enabled her to travel the world and see first hand the important role played by BHP Billiton

in remote communities in places such as The Andes and Mozambique, places she might never have seen otherwise. Of course, she’s travelled to London, New York and all the major cities, yet these less well known places hold some of her fondest travel memories, because she could mix with local people, those who derived the direct ‘grass roots’ benefit from development in those areas. She enjoys the very strong support she has received in progressing through management ranks at BHP Billiton, rising to significant executive positions along the way. Her boss of the past ten years has been a very strong supporter, encouraging Alison to take on great work and career challenges.

Alison attributes her business success to the lessons learned on her family farm in those formative years - where “you need to work hard or nothing is achieved”. Her parents instilled self-belief by never setting limitations. As Alison remarked, “they encouraged me to do whatever I wanted in terms of career, they didn’t see any obstacles to success if I was determined and worked hard enough. They encouraged me to chase my dreams and my whole family and friendship network has supported me all the way.” Whenever an overseas posting was offered and Alison was tempted to baulk at the opportunity, her strongest support came from family and friends to take up these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. These overseas stints included two years living in Holland, and eighteen months in Singapore and London; places where she has formed enduring friendships.

Her advice to fellow Porsche enthusiasts is to join the Porsche Club of Victoria or a group of Porsche driving friends and explore all the great driving options on offer. “They are incredibly encouraging, they never judge you according to the model of Porsche you drive and they are always incredibly supportive, offering helpful driving tips so you can get the best out of every driving experience.” It’s like being part of a larger ‘Porsche family’.

What does Alison especially enjoy about her latest Porsche? Everything really, but especially the PDK transmission which allows you to enjoy driving in any conditions - from busy city traffic at 40 km/h to mountain roads and on the track. And of course there’s the Sports Mode which Alison calls “amazing!”. She told a funny story of taking her mother for a drive in her new 911 C2S, only for her mother to respond with a simple, “that’s nice dear”, after a leisurely drive around the block. The story was quite different when she offered her dad a ride. Alison couldn’t ever recall her father swearing in front of the children, it was something he held strongly as a rule all his adult life. All that changed when Alison pressed firmly on the accelerator and her father let out an involuntary, “Holy #&*!, that’s some kind of car!”

With one final flourish we left Alison to her busy schedule, with her parting comment, “Until they tell me I’m too old, I am never going to have another car other than a Porsche 911”.

UNTIL THEY TELL ME I’M TOO OLD, I AM NEVER GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER CAR OTHER

THAN A PORSCHE 911.

Earlier this year, Porsche Cars Australia hosted the largest Porsche Targa Tasmania Tour to date. The upcoming Porsche Targa High Country sold out within one week.

The Porsche Pavilion at the 2015 Grand Prix was oversubscribed, as was its complementary event the Porsche High Flier Grand Prix Experience and the attendance from Australia at the Porsche Driving Experience Winter 2015 Programmes was the largest from any Porsche subsidiary worldwide.

Add to these exciting experiences, Porsche’s Advanced Driver Training days and the Porsche Sport Driving School and you have a mix of opportunities available to truly enjoy the full benefits of owning a Porsche.

The one thing all of these events has in common is exciting the Porsche

customer and ensuring their passion for the brand is continually kindled.

Some of these events will involve driving your own car, or maybe a selection of Porsche’s cars. The Grand Prix, of course, is Australia’s select motorsport spectacle. All are embraced by our customers.

2016 is expected to be an even bigger year on the Porsche event calendar. If you are keen to learn more about any of these events, please do not hesitate to contact Porsche Cars Australia on 1800 062 911.

There is an abundance of fun and excitement in the waiting.
