Minesoft is pleased to announce the release of a brand new Analytics Engine, PatBase Analytics V2.0. This new module offers analytics on up to 250,000 records with the availability of 3-dimensional analysis.

We have updated the interface and design, granting users access to a range of colours and design schemes with the option to insert your owncompany logo into the chart viewer for sharingwith colleagues and clients.

Searches loaded into the new module can be filtered to focus the analysis on specific assignees,jurisdictions, date ranges and patent types, granting the user greater control over the dataused to generate their charts and graphs.

Users can now take advantage of 2 separate levelsof analysis, with a third being added in 2018:

Basic analysis Completes quickly and produces a summary dashboard with primary insights (e.g. most occurring jurisdiction/assignees).

Standard analysisProduces additional chart types offering secondary breakdowns (e.g. top jurisdiction by year, top assignee by jurisdiction etc.).

Deep analysis – Coming in 2018A comprehensive 3-level breakdown with drilldown options to review individual events and publications.

In addition, our new, intuitive 2D and 3D landscaping tools are now available!Up to 5000 families can be rendered in either a heatmap or topological view with

relationships within your dataset visualised using keyword cluster analysis to group documents together using common terms in theirfull text content.

Users will benefit from helpful notifications, highlighting when changes in a result set occurcompared to a historical analysis and alertingusers to the new data via the in-built notificationsystem.

Sharing with clients and colleagues has neverbeen easier thanks to the implementation of anAnalytics Viewer. Users can share charts easilywith specific recipients; a new “Note” feature allows users to add descriptions or comments tothe data, which will be shared alongside the chart– so you can quickly add your expertise.

The new version of Analytics is now available inPatBase. Analytics V1.0 will continue to run for alimited time.

Minesoft launches new Analytics Engine

Legal Status continues to be a hot topic at Minesoft. We have now added USPTO PAIR datato the Legal Status viewer in PatBase. To helpnavigate this new data, we have added a ‘Source’column to clearly identify where the legal statusinformation originated and we have mapped theUSPTO legal status events to our colour-codedevent groups, making it easier than ever for ourusers to visually identify the type of event thathas occurred.

In addition, the Register links in PatBase for USpublications now direct users to up-to-date PAIRinformation, a full transaction history and links tothe assignment history, maintenance fees andfile wrapper. Thanks to the addition of USPTOPAIR, our users can now more efficiently reviewup-to-date legal status information for any US application.

This Winter, Minesoft and RWS will be addingJapanese National Office legal status data to PatBase, processed and enhanced by RWS usingtheir translation expertise, to further expand ourcollection of legal status information.

New coverage in PatBaseOver the past year, Minesoft has workedto significantly enhance the data includedwithin our suite of patent solutions so that our users can access the most comprehensive set of patent data withinthe industry.

Updates to Classification Explorer

New command to view citations has been added

It is now possible to add multiple folders toyour search history when viewing private folders under ‘My saved folders’. This is doneby checking the boxes for the folders whichyou would like to search and selecting “add tohistory” in the drop-down menu at the bottomof the page.

Classification Explorer has been recently updated; if a user loads the module whenviewing a family, the classification codes whichapply to the family in question are highlightedso you can quickly check which codes are mostrelevant.

In addition, we have added a link to Classification Explorer when viewing the CPCor IPC codes, these direct users to either Espacenet (for CPC codes) or WIPO (for IPC codes).

For those who utilise the Command Line inPatBase, we have now added a new functionality. Users can search for forward and backward citations for a specific publication number.

Searchable Turkishbibliographic dataDespite recent upheavals, the growth of IPand research in Turkey over recent years hasbeen huge, with Turkey rising 16 points in theglobal innovation index in 2016 alone!

Until recently, Turkish patent professionalshave had their searches hampered by a lackof Turkish patent information in both publicand commercial databases, resulting in theneed to search both the Turkish Patent Institute (TPI) database (where captcha codesare required for every search) and an international patent database separately.

Minesoft has recently sourced and added up-to-date Turkish patent and utility modeldata to PatBase, allowing the data to be searched with no delays.

Furthermore, we have made it possible to search the Turkish data in both the original language and in English.

This is of benefit to both Turkish and international PatBase users as they cansearch this information at the same timeas data from over 106 other issuing authorities.

This has been achieved by changing the way weindex Turkish words in PatBase, for example:

After receiving feedback from PatBase users,we have enhanced our PatBase alerts template. Administrators on accounts cannow request changes to the formatting ofthe alerts received by users.

Company branding can be incorporated byadding your logo and/or company colours.

Please be aware that only administrators of accounts are authorised to request changesto PatBase alerts.

From the Export menu of PatBase, userscan now select the Centredoc – RAPID4 option under “Third party export formats”.This will generate a preconfigured XML file ready to be imported into RAPID4.

Links from PatBase to GenomeQuest to identify patent sequence information

PatBase users are now able to seamlessly linkfrom PatBase to GenomeQuest to identifyand interrogate the genetic sequence information within a patent publication. Oncea user has selected one or more publicationsof interest and clicked “Order”, they will begiven the option to import the set of publication numbers into GenomeQuest.Users can more efficiently identify and review

the genetic sequence data for patentpublications of interest.

This new feature compliments the previouslyintroduced functionality linking GenomeQuestto PatBase, whereby a user can identify thecomplete patent family and associated fulltext for patent publications which contain agenetic sequence of interest.

Enhancements to TextMine

The Minesoft Development Team has now updated TextMine to show a new group of entities, antibodies, and to include a new mosaic view of the images within the sectionof the document you are viewing.

Clicking on the mosaic image view link willopen a pop-up window displaying all of theimages which make up the mosaic. By selecting an image, users can enlarge andscroll through any images included in the current document section.

Clicking on any image whilst using theTextMine tool will also open the new view.

We have also added the ability to export theentities identified by TextMine into Excel or asa PDF document. This option is available atthe bottom of the entity list and will export allcurrently selected entities which can be selected using the check-boxes against entitygroups or individual entities.

Chemical Explorer is an ideal companion toPatBase if you need to search patents forchemical information. Users can create chemical structure queries, these can take theform of identity, similarity and substructuresearches.

Populated via automated chemical entityrecognition, Chemical Explorer uses bothchemical names and chemical sketches asinput, making patents chemically searchablewithin hours of publication. The text-miningapproach used to find chemical names uses acombination of the systematic grammar ofchemical names, to find novel compounds,and extensive dictionaries of drug and tradenames. As the system knows the syntax ofchemical names it automatically makes sensible spelling corrections prior to converting the chemical names to their corresponding structures. This is especially important for the correct extraction of entitiesfrom older or lower-quality documents.

Users can also find structures in chemicalsketches, currently focused on US patents, forwhich ChemDraw files are available from 2001onwards. Although ChemDraw files are machine-readable, a lot of work still needs togo into determining the intention of what isdrawn, for example, does a ‘B’ indicate a boronatom or a label? In addition, generic structuresand the many ways of representing

substituents must be understood so thatthese are not erroneously considered to becomplete chemical compounds.

The system covers patents published in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Frenchand German. For French and German patentsthe difference from English is often relativelyminor and Japanese and Korean chemicalnames are often phonetically similar to English (or German!), but written in Katakanaand Hangul respectively. Chemical names inChinese use specific characters with chemicalmeaning e.g. 酮means “ketone”. The translation of such characters into English isheavily contextual as the same charactercould be used as a substituent (“oxo-”) or asuffix (“-one”).

New appointmentsThroughout 2017, there has been a significantamount of expansion at Minesoft. The US teamhas now opened a new office based in LongBeach, New York. The German team have movedoffices from Düsseldorf to Neuss and a new Development office has opened in Cambridge, UK. At the same time, we have had some excitingnew additions to the Minesoft team in the pastfew months.

Daniel Lowe has recently joined the Developmentteam after previously working with Minesoft inthe development of Chemical Explorer andTextMine. Daniel has a PhD in Chemistry from theUniversity of Cambridge, his previous work wasfocused on the extraction of information from scientific literature, including chemical properties,chemical-disease relationships and chemical reactions. This led Daniel to discover an interest in patent literature as a vast source of unencumbered scientific data.

Matvei Maurer has recently joined the BusinessDevelopment team, originally from Sweden, witha German/Russian background. Matvei received adegree focused on IP and company law from .

University College London and started his careerworking within the legal team of an optical fibrecompany, before joining a major internationalprovider of IP-related services, where he advisedand supported several high-profile clients on theirIP workflows. When not working, Matvei enjoys visiting friends abroad, discovering new musicalstyles and reading surrealist literature, as well asplaying badminton, a sport which he used to pursuesemi-professionally.

Mélanie Bridier recently joined Minesoft as part ofOlivier Huc’s team to provide support and trainingto our French-speaking users. Mélanie is new to theworld of intellectual property but has found hernew role to be a fascinating learning curve as shecontinues to develop and challenge herself. Drawing on her previous experience in customersupport, business development and web-marketinghas been a vast help in helping Mélanie effectivelysolve user queries.

We’re also pleased to welcome back Ida-Maria Perriman from maternity leave, Jorge Stegemannfrom paternity leave and Phil Ostanock from hiswell-earned sabbatical!

For new users, we are launching a new on-boarding webpage. This will include all the informationyou need to get started with simplified tutorial videos to give an overview of the functionalities inPatBase. In addition, we have added several more advanced videos tutorials on different ways ofsearching in PatBase which can be viewed when you log-in.

This year, Minesoft is delighted to be sponsoringthe “Major Templates for Business Success” conference, an annual event which takes placeduring the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. Aftera successful debut in 2013, the event providesan impressive forum for German informationprofessionals. Initiated by Dr. Willi Bredemeierin cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair, theevent offers a platform for knowledge exchange,accompanied by high-level speakers sharing insights into the successes and challenges of developing innovative business models.

During the conference, Minesoft’s director,Jochen Lennhof, will also be giving a presentation on how IP experts rely on our services to manage and analyse business-critical patent information. At Minesoft, we areactively present at patent-related events wherewe maintain an intensive dialog with our

customers, exchanging valuable experienceswith representatives of leading research institutions and discussing ways of enhancing ourservices.

As a proud sponsor, Minesoft also supports various charitable, cultural and educational organisations each year. This year, it was withgreat pleasure, that Minesoft supported UNICHOR(university choir) of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) in their concert tour to Asia undertaken in September. The aim of the tour was to further expand HHU’s contacts withuniversities in South Korea and Japan.

The group has more than 100 members and hasfirmly established itself in the cultural life of Düsseldorf and in the choral scene of its federalhome state North Rhine-Westphalia.

An update from the German office

In 2017, growth has been at the forefront for theUS Minesoft Tempus IP Team. Our team has doubledin size, with a brand-new New York office located onthe beach of South Shore, Long Island. This year, wehave enhanced our suite of products, such as the additional legal status data we are now receiving directly from national patent offices, with a direct APIfeed to USPTO PAIR data. We’re excited to share thesenew enhancements with our clients.

The Support Team will be reaching out over thephone and via on-site visits to help maximise ourusers’ ability to use Minesoft services. We have beenpresent at several conferences over the past year, andwe’re looking forward to exhibiting at conferences on

the east and west coast of the United States, aswell as Canada and Mexico.

It is great to have the opportunity to developpersonal relationships with clients and to expand our clientele by demonstrating how theMinesoft suite of products can make a true difference for internal IP strategy.

The US team are excited about the recent developments and encourage our clients to takefull advantage of the demonstrations, trainings,and customer support which is always includedand readily available with Minesoft.

An update from the US office

A team of Minesoft staff from our London andDüsseldorf offices were excited to attend the IPI-ConfEx in Rome earlier this year. It was greatto catch up with both old and new customers,alongside some new faces! Moreover, we werepleased to be so involved in the conferencewhere Minesoft originally demonstrated PatBasein 2004, a mere 5 months after launching theplatform. In April, Minesoft’s Olivier Huc, Caitlin Kavanaghand James Wicks were delighted to spend a fewdays in Paris for LESI 2017! Hundreds of delegates from across the globe took the opportunity to share international practicethrough a series of talks and workshops, as wellas during more informal networking sessions organised by the LES Young Members Congress.

In April, Greg Harrop-Griffiths visited Bengalurufor the World IP Forum. A great opportunity toshow customers and prospects the new AnalyticsV2.0, alongside the new Semantic Search & PatBase Thesaurus available in PatBase and PatBase Express. Minesoft have exhibited inIndia four times throughout 2017 and in October we are organising the first ever Minesoft Roadshow in India.
