Radar-Online-Adjustment (RADOLAN)

Thomas Junghänel et al. – 37th Conference on Radar Meteorology – Norman, OK, USA – 17th September 2015

Input: radar data

• 5 min terrain-following

precipitation scan

Pre-processing

• orographic shading correction

• refined Z/R-relation

• compose local data to regular grit

• accumulation to 1h data set

• statistical clutter filter (-72h)

Adjustment

• separate application of two methods:

differences and factor procedure

• selection of the best procedure with

leave-one-out method

Post-processing

• external texture-based clutter filter

Input: rain gauge data

• hourly observations

Output

• 1h gauge-adjusted

and quality-controlled

radar data

Summary

24

Radar-Based Precipitation Climatology

• Need for a high-resolution

precipitation data set

• Combination of radar and rain gauge

data (RADOLAN)

• First reprocessing: still radar artifacts

but expected spatial distribution

• Next Steps: including additional rain

gauge data and improving

preprocessing
