Vanier alumni to unite for one giant 40th anniversary reunion
by Stephen Dafoe
Former students of Georges P. Vanier School are being invited to attend a weekend-long reunion during this year's St. Jean Baptiste (SJB) Festival. The event runs June 19 to 21.
Organizer Gerry Gaetz said there had been a reunion every 10 years since he graduated in 1975. Forty years later, the reunion will expand to anyone who ever attended the school, whether they graduated there or not.
"With all of us getting older... we decided to get more people involved," Gaetz said. "Some of these grades in between us have never had one of these. It boils down to pretty much anyone who went to high school in the Vanier school in Morinville."
Organizers are planning a weekend worth of activities during this year's festival with a number of 70s themed activities. The reunion's two major events include an icebreaker at the curling club on Friday night and a banquet in conjunction with the SJB Rock Concert on Saturday night. Attendees will be encouraged to take part in other SJB events happening throughout town over the weekend.
"They'll remember that St. Jean Baptiste Days are a lot like the old Frontier Days when they were going to school," Gaetz said.
Co-organizer Ron Cust said the reunion group had been working with the SJB Committee and will be entering a float in the parade. Additionally, the festival will display blue and white pennants across the parade route to show off the old Vanier school colours.
Tickets for the reunion banquet/rock concert have already topped 200 units sold. They are hoping to open the number of seats up to 250 but with tickets selling fast, they are encouraging people to buy their tickets as soon as possible. Tickets for the reunion event are $79.25 plus a $5.75 process-ing fee.
Tickets for the concert portion of the evening are $30. This admission price would allow non-Vanier alumni to come to the event after 8:30 to join the party and dance. Cust said 100 tickets to the con-cert will be available to the general public who want to attend the show.
For more information on the event visit eventbrite.ca/e/morinville-gp-vanier-40th-reunion-tick-ets-15678844847.

Festival Society chair passing the torch after 2015 festivalby Stephen Dafoe
After this year's St. Jean Baptiste Festival, Festival Chair Paul Smith will step back from the lead role in the organization's activ-ities, passing the torch to Vice Chair David LeBel. Smith made the announcement at the Festival Society's May 6 meeting.
Smith said he is stepping back, not down from the group he has been an active part in for the past half decade. Smith will work with LeBel throughout the duration of 2015, and then take on the role as Past Chair and Advisor to provide some continuity.
The local business owner and concert promoter has served as Festival Chair for four years. Prior to that, he served one year as Vice Chair and one year as Entertainment Director.
"I'm very proud of the hands this committee is in and proud to have been chair of this committee," Smith said. "I'm elated that fes-tivals will continue strong for years to come."
Smith said a major part of his advisor role would be keeping the links and relationships with the Festival Society's many sponsors open and strong.
Incoming Festival Chair David LeBel said he realizes he has some big shoes to fill. "It's a large role to assume, considering I've only been with the Festival Society for a year," he said. "Fortunately, I feel the community is really supporting what we are trying to do, and knowing that I'll have the support and guidance of people who have done this before, together we can work to continue to improve the festivals each year."
Though he won't assume the helm until 2015, LeBel said he sees his primary objective as community building and working with an objective of bringing the town together.
"What I see as the vision is having the Festival Society more pres-ent throughout the year," LeBel said. "Last year we focused really hard on two events and then the Country Fair was run separately," LeBel said. "This year we are taking control of the Country Fair and the Farm-to-Table Dinner. We also want to get involved with Fam-ily Day like it once was, and continuing the Farmers' Market year round."
LeBel said future iterations of their fall event sponsored by Cham-pion Petfoods would get back to the original food roots. "I want to lean that festival out a bit and make it more focused to what it is supposed to be as opposed to being a second St. Jean Baptiste Fes-tival," LeBel said, adding a smaller and more focused festival would alleviate volunteer workloads. "It will be more food, more music — directed at what it is supposed to be as opposed to a carnival all weekend."
No date is set for the Festival Society's fall festival. St. Jean Bap-tiste Festival takes place June 19 to 21.

Members of Morinville Enforcement Services, Morinville RCMP, and Alberta Health Services were on hand volunteering their time for the annual Giddy Up and Go Bike Rodeo May 14. The free event ran from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the arena parking lot and was open to children between the ages of 6 and 12.
CPO Cody Rossing, who organized Thursday night’s event, said mid-May is a perfect time to hold the event to teach new riders and remind those who have ridden before about the rules of the road.
After a talk on helmets and concussions at the Got a Brain Get a Helmet station, which included a brain made of Jell-O and evaporated milk, participants received training on the obstacle course, and took a tour of an ambulance and its equipment.
Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members Tracy Buffalo Crew Lead, EMT-P Public Relations Coordinator and Ian Cowie donated a new bike to the event on behalf of EMS. The winner of the new bike draw was Alyssa Stolson.
Last year’s event drew about 45 children to learn the rules of the road. This year’s event drew about 25 children wanting to take part in the event.

Last week’s story - Festival Society Takes The Axe To Annual Fire Works Display included a poll in our online edition. Here are the results as of our press deadline:
No way - bring back our fireworks 54.32%
Sure - Beards are in and so are lumberjack skills
32.1%
Meh - I’m not bothered either way 13.58%
And here is what some of you had to say on our website and Facebook page:
Ron Cust said: Okay. Have a I lost my mind. Is this really happening in this town. After the number of previous people who worked with the town council to make this part of the corner-stone of the S.J.B Festival. July 1, 2015 needs to
remain as well. Has respect for our country fallen out of fashion also. Is anything sacred anymore. Will the parade or Firefighters Combat Challenge be next? My father was a true lumberjack from 1930s to 1945 and if he was here he would vote for fireworks. That was his highlight of the old Frontier Daze (Besides the beer garden).
Ryan Santrock wrote: I view SJB festival as a festival about and for the town. It’s to celebrate our heritage in Morinville. Sure we have midway rides, a parade and some other events that may not be about the heritage but they are sponsored by local companies and its to help bring the town out to celebrate as a community. I don’t see how a lumber jack compition that will bring in outside people is helping to celebrate what Morinville is. I have nothing against it, would love to see it may-be on the Canada day weekend but don’t feel it fits in with SJB festival vibe.
Kelvin Biddiscombe wrote: Fireworks would draw more than lumberjack [competition]. Fire-works should be main attraction at any festivals. It’s a kid’s dream to see the awesome display of colour in the sky.

AltaLink Presents to Council
Ed Toupin, Manager of North Stations at Alta-Link, gave a brief presentation to Council at their May 12 regular meeting. AltaLink is Alberta’s largest transmission company and is responsible for servicing electrical transmission lines that end up delivering power to 85% of Albertans, includ-ing those who live in Morinville.
Much of the presentation focused on the dis-tinction between electrical companies that deal with generation, transmission, distribution and retailers. With companies like AltaLink responsi-ble for carrying power from generation sources (coal, wind, hydro etc.) through large transmis-sion lines and to substations. From there, elec-tricity is taken to homes within communities from distributors (FortisAlberta in Morinville) where people buy their energy from retailers (EPCOR, Direct Energy, etc.)
Councillor Rob Ladouceur asked Toupin a question about whether any new transmission lines would be going through Morinville or the surrounding area, to which Toupin said nothing came to mind, and that there would not be any significant changes to the community’s electrical system in the near future. However, there are changes in generation coming, with Toupin point-ing to the end of life for many coal generation plants in Alberta, with new wind and solar energy expanding to replace them.
Council thanked Toupin for his presentation, but later in the meeting Councillor Stephen Dafoe commented that he thought regular meetings of Council should focus on decision making, with information presentations being more appro-priate for the once-monthly Committee of the Whole meetings. Mayor Holmes agreed, saying that presentations will only be held during reg-ular meetings of Council if there is a scheduling conflict that does not permit presenters to attend the once monthly meetings.
Council gets update on schools
CAO Debbie Oyarzun gave Council a brief update on the progress of Morinville’s schools, explaining that very soon town staff will be on hand to assist MPES with the installation of six new modulars to accommodate dramatic student population growth.
Oyarzun also noted that potential school sites were being worked on for both school divisions.
Council gets rec centre update
CAO Debbie Oyarzun gave Council an update to the new rec centre project following an open house held Mar. 26. In the update, Oyarzun in-formed Council the nine groups of residents that attended the event were tasked with building a theoretical rec centre with all the amenities they wanted. They could choose to build in stages or all at once, and were given ballpark figures as to what different features and build styles would cost. If they went over the allotted budget, they were asked how they would pay for the increased cost.
As expected, a variety of responses were re-ceived, but some commonalities were found. All groups wanted to see a running track built in the first stage of the building, with seven wanting an ice arena and seven wanting a fieldhouse.
Oyarzun said work has already began on site identifying the thickness of topsoil and the nature of drainage and grading on the property. This will allow town staff to provide better estimates for building cost. An RFP for a project manager and designer will be going out shortly.

town to borrow $1 Million as part of the $1.7 mil-lion purchase of the land east of East Boundary Road for the construction of the new recreation centre. The remaining $700,000 will come from reserves and grants. The $1 Million borrowed will not accrue any interest and would be paid in two payments of $500,000 over two years.
CAO Debbie Oyarzun called the bylaw a “for-mality” required by the Municipal Government Act. As such, it passed without any questions or clarification. Second and perhaps third reading will be given at the next meeting of Council.
Council approves Strategic Plan with a few revisions
Council approved their Vision, Mission Goals and Strategic Direction statements after some discussion and debate. While it received the endorsement of Council, CAO Debbie Oyarzun referred to the plan as a “living document” that will adapt based on Council direction.
The document was developed in consort with consultant Ian McCormackl of Strategic Steps Inc. and encompases a list of priorities and stra-tegic approaches the town will take in the short and long term.
Outlined in the document are 17 goals with related strategies and desired outcomes related to those goals. Outlined in the document are the goals of: Responsible Government, Organization-al Effectiveness Review, Regional Hub, Celebrate Culture, Unique Identity, Healthy Citizens, Ap-propriate Housing, Equitable Access, Community Safety, Alternative and Accessible Transportation, Economic Strength and Diversity, Economic De-velopment, Efficient Utilities, Recreational Facility, Effective Transportation Infrastructure, Emergen-cy Facilities and Environmental Mindfulness.
Each goal has sub-strategies and desired outcomes with rated priorities, and the complete document is available on the town’s website (mo-rinville.ca). The plan saw a few minor revisions, but ultimately was endorsed by Council who have worked on creating the document in a number of workshops.
Council gets information request update on curbside recycling
Public Works Director Claude Valcourt and Communications Coordinator Felicity Bergman responded to an information request from Coun-cil clarifying how the curbside recycling program works and what is and is not accepted.
Among the issues discussed was the recycling of glass. While it is accepted, glass must now be placed in a separate blue bag that is properly se-cured to prevent glass shattering and spreading on community streets.
Councillor Dafoe asked whether or not sty-rofoam meat trays were recyclable. Bergman explained no form of styrofoam is accepted under Morinville’s curbside recycling program, despite some types of styrofoam being accepted in other community’s recycling programs.
Public Works Director Claude Valcourt also said he would investigate the cost of using blue recycling bins with automated pickup as opposed to the current manual pickup method following a question from Mayor Holmes.
Police looking for info on odd dangerous driving incident
Morinville RCMP responded to a call May 14 where a lone male was struck by a vehicle resulting in the male landing on the hood.
The incident occurred in a parking lot of a business located in the Morinville Industrial Park. The driver of the vehicle continued into downtown Morinville with the male still holding onto the hood.
Through the investigation, RCMP were able to locate the vehicle as well as identify all par-ties involved. It was confirmed that no injuries were sustained as a result.
RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in coming forward with any information in re-gards to this incident as it is still an active and on-going investigation. If you have any infor-mation, please contact the Morinville RCMP at 780-939-4520.

Student actors to teach audience Zombie Apocalypse survival tips
by Stephen Dafoe
Anyone who has watched AMC’s The Walking Dead or any of the old George Romero zombie flicks will likely agree $5 is a small price to pay for 10 tips on how to survive the Zombie Apocalypse. Of course, those who do not believe in the potential of such things will have to be content that their $5 will be well spent on an evening’s entertainment.
Morinville Public School Drama students will perform 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse, the school’s first dramatic presentation, May 26 and 27 at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.
Teacher and director Chris Layton is excited to see the hard work his students began last December unfold on the cultural centre stage.
“It’s the first time Morinville Public’s ever done a school play,” Layton said, adding he previously directed five plays at Gutherie School before coming to MPS. “I was very ex-
cited to work with the kids. I picked a zombie play because that’s what the kids are into these days - something they can sink their teeth into. It’s amazing to see these kids apply themselves.”
Layton said he doesn’t want to give much away about the play and the promised 10 tips. He would say that the first tip is to sactrifice the weak. “We run you through some ways to keep yourself safe in the event of a zombie inva-sion,” he said.
The teacher / director is encouraging people to come and see the play. “It’s our first play so we want to perform to as many people as we can,” Layton said. “Being our first time out, all of the proceeds are going to make drama big-ger and better here. We really need people to come out to support the show.”
Doors open each night at 6:30 p.m. and the 40-minute show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per seat and available at the school or at the door.
Morinville Public School drama students put on their best undead faces ahead of next week’s performances of 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.

Meet our newest additions, Francine and Frankie. They came into the clinic separately, but have seen become good ol’ buddies. These two can be adopted as a couple, or individually. Francine
and Frankie are both approximately 10 years old. Francine is a white Shih Tzu mix and Frankie is a white/grey/brown
Shih Tzu mix. Since in our care, they have been spayed/neutered, dewormed, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. Both dogs have medical issues (blind, hard of hearing, Francine has a heart condition, and both have back issues), so a special home will be needed. If you are interested in giving either of these friendly dogs a loving home in their senior years, please
