2 Overview of TWD Fabrication Services

TWD Fabrication Services aims at delivering turnkey products based on designs that have been engineered

by TWD. We offer an Engineering, Procurement and Fabrication Management (EPFM) service to minimize

work load for the client and maximize efficiency in terms of quality, planning, and costs. We relieve the

client of a time consuming yet key part of their operation by ensuring the on-time, turnkey delivery and

installation of all temporary works.

Our EPFM service includes:

▪ Engineering

▪ Certification

▪ Procurement

▪ Fabrication management

▪ Testing and commissioning

▪ Operational assistance

In the sub-paragraphs below, a selection of TWD’s Fabrication Services projects are described in more

detail. References can be provided upon request.

2.1 Cradle supports for large luxury yachts

TWD designed and constructed support cradles for two of Oceanco’s large luxury custom yachts. A practical

design met the clients design requirements: to enable transportation on self-propelled modular

transporters, to support the yacht hull throughout the construction process, and to allow finishing works on

the outside of the hull. For one of the yachts hydraulic supports were integrated into the 100mT steel

cradles, ensuring correct distribution of the load and protection of the hull. Wooden CNC milled blocks were

placed between the cradle and hull to ensure good shape agreement and even pressure distribution.

Certification of the design and construction by Lloyd’s Register was also arranged by TWD.

2.2 Cradle supports Manifold overboarding operation

SAL Heavy Lift was in need of a partner to determine the operations for the overboarding of four subsea

manifolds. The involvement of TWD’s Fabrication Services was twofold. Firstly, the EPFM service was used

for all temporary steel that had to be installed on deck. This ranged from a small wire inboarding chute to a

large overboarding tool for the linkplate-shackle assembly. Secondly, a procurement officer from TWD

worked full-time at the client’s office to relieve the project team from arranging the procurement of all

items required for the project and maintaining a clear budget overview.

2.3 Lifting frames for subsea installations

Jumbo requested TWD to perform the EPFM of three lifting frames for the installation of anchor assemblies

for a subsea floating freshwater pipeline. A square frame was used to lower 240mT anchors to the seabed.

A buoy frame lowered buoys to target depths of 280 meters. A third frame was used to lower a 16mT

weight for stability. TWD facilitated certification by Lloyd’s Register, arranged procurement, supervised

fabrication, and organized load testing, all within a demanding time frame.

2.4 Guiding frames for flange gripper

ArGe Baltic 2 Foundations required guiding frames in order to safely place and remove a flange gripper on a

jacket. The frames ensured easy placement of the gripper and also protected the sensitive access structures

around the flange from a swinging flange gripper during operations. TWD provided its full EPFM service,

including design certification by DNV-GL and management of the fabrication of 18 guiding frames in Poland.

The entire project from concept design to frame delivery was performed within 10 weeks.

2.5 Suction bucket jacket clamps

GeoSea required a seafastening solution for the transportation of Suction Bucket Jackets (SBJ) to the

Borkum Riffgrund offshore wind farm. TWD created an innovative and operation-friendly design that

clamps the suction buckets on deck. The clamp design was optimized for fabrication in close cooperation

with the steel constructor, and a 400mT load was performed at the fabricator for verification. Certification

was done by DNV-GL. Furthermore, the project entailed the EPFM of small steel items to assist the

underwater ROV operations. TWD’s EPFM service for this project clearly contributed to its final success.

2.6 Pile upending tool

Weserwind, a steel constructor in Germany, was building an upending tool based on a TWD design. In the

final phase of fabrication, the tool needed to be certified by a certification society; a typical Fabrication

Service offered by TWD. Certification was procured and managed by TWD and carried out by Lloyd’s

Register, both the design review and field surveys at Weserwind. Furthermore, TWD assisted Weserwind

during fabrication, procured the steel wire that was part of the design, and operated the system offshore.

2.7 Hydrohammer frame

Scaldis requested TWD to provide its EPFM service for the creation of a hydrohammer frame. The frame

was used to temporarily store a hydrohammer on a barge at a convenient location during offshore

operations. Within a demanding time frame, TWD designed, procured, arranged certification, and managed

fabrication of the structure to ensure the on-time delivery of the frame. Having relieved the client of this

part of the project, they were able to focus their attention on other critical aspects.

3 Organization

3.1 Project organization

The strength of TWD’s EPFM services becomes apparent when one looks at the two project organizational

overviews shown below. As an expert on our own designs, and steel design and fabrication in general, TWD

is the best party to communicate directly with the certification company, steel fabricator, and other

subcontractors concerning procurement and fabrication management. Based on our knowledge of the

design we can explain the required work to the subcontractors, find the best price, and optimize planning.

The client only deals with TWD and will be regularly updated on planning, budget, and other project specific

developments.

Project organization overview

The strength of the EPFM project is also apparent from a broader perspective, as depicted in the two

figures below. In the traditional procurement model, the client is limited to its own supplier database and

experience. With the EPFM model, TWD considers the suppliers and experience from a range of projects to

select the best parties to be considered for the work at hand. All potential suppliers are part of the

procurement database system at TWD. This database includes information about the supplier’s quality

system, previous quotations, and past project evaluations. As an independent player in the field with

detailed knowledge of the design, TWD is the right party to select and evaluate suppliers for a project in

cooperation with the client.

3.2 Project team

TWD basic project organisation diagram

The project engineer (PE) in the TWD project organisation plays the central role and is the primary point of

contact for the client. The PE focuses on one single project and guides the complete process from kick-off to

turnkey delivery. In this role, the PE translates client wishes into practical, safe, and economical designs.

The PE is responsible for budget and planning and supervises the team of engineers, draftsmen and

procurement officers.

The lead engineer (LE) supervises the project team and plays an active role in the design process. The LE

oversees the design process, suggests concepts, and performs quality checks on every deliverable.

The Manager Fabrication Services (FM) supervises the procurement and fabrication management part of

the project. His specialized experience in these fields will be beneficial for the project’s success.

The senior draftsman (SD) is responsible for timely delivery of drawings, revision status, work distribution

and planning of the draftsmen. The SD is in charge of the master model and analyzes the sub-assemblies

provided by the draftsmen regarding overall function, clashes, and consistency.

3.3 Working method

The working method for an EPFM project is not set in stone and can be easily adjusted to the client’s needs.

Most of TWD’s clients are involved in projects where delay and/or failure is very expensive. This is why we

consider quality and planning the two key factors for a successful project. Our preferred working method is

therefore to act ‘on behalf of’ the client, meaning we keep a transparent and open book budget, see section

5 for an example budget report. All work is performed on a reimbursable basis. Purchasing is performed by

TWD on a cost-plus basis, however, contracts with subcontractors are preferably made directly with the

client, as there is no added value when TWD is contractually in between.
