A. Creating Turnitin Assignment on LMS:

Step#01: Select the course on your main home page, in which you want to create a Turnitin assignment.

Step#02: Once inside your course, click “Turn editing on” button on the top right corner of the window.

Step#03: Let’s create Turnitin assignment, after clicking on “Add an activity or resource”.

Step#04: Click on Turnitin assignment then click on “Add”. Assignment settings page will open.

1. General Settings: The general section allows you to give your assignment a name, summary and summary type.

a. Turnitin Assignment Name: Name is mandatory field which will appear on LMS where student will click to view the details of assignment.

b. Summary: Mention the description under it. This option includes exactly what you expect from the students to do and how they will be evaluated.

c. Submission Type: Submission can be made in following two (02) formats. i. File Upload: Under this type file can be uploaded.

ii. Text Submission: Under this type Copy and paste option is available.

d. Number of Parts: It allows for the creation of a multi part assignment, it allows individual users that they can submit their one piece of work to each part or chapter wise/topic wise.

e. Maximum File Size: This option determines the maximum file for user’s

submissions to each assignment part. The maximum file size for file upload on

Turnitin is 20Mb.

f. Overall Grade: It determines the maximum allowed grade for the overall assignment, each part of an assignment has a maximum mark allocated which is used to proportionally distribute the grade in order to determine the overall grade.

g. Student Originality Reports: This option is mandatory to fill which has following two (02) options. Yes: This option allows generating originality report of each assignment submitted. No: This option allows that originality report won’t be generated for the assignments.

2. Turnitin Advanced Options:

a. Allow Late Submission: It has following two (02) options.

Yes: It allows to the students will be allowed to upload their assignments even after due date. No: Students will not be allowed to upload their assignments even after due date

b. Report Generation Speed: It has following three (03) options.

i. Generate reports immediately, first report is final: Originality report of first

submission is generated which is the final originality report. With this option the

student cannot resubmit the assignment.

ii. Generate reports immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date: With

this option the selected students can resubmit their assignments. Until due date,

originality report of each submission will be generated but every originality report

will overwrite the previous submitted assignments originality report and it may

take up to 24 hours to process originality report for resubmitted assignments.

iii. Generate reports on due date: Originality reports will be generated only for the

assignment submitted on due date.

c. Store Students Papers: It has following three (03) options.

i. No Repository: Selecting this option will not store your student’s paper into Turnitin student’s repository.

ii. Standard Repository: Once the document is submitted with standard repository settings then it will go in to the internet wide data bank for plagiarism checking when this document is submitted again with slight/minor changes it will be checked against the already submitted version of the document.

iii. Institutional Repository (where applicable): Some of the institutions maintained

their data banks with HEC, like NUST is having with HEC when the document is

submitted then the document will go in to that institutional specific data bank after

plagiarism checking.

d. Check against stored student papers:

Yes: It will allow for checking submissions of students against each other or previous classes & already stored student papers in the repository. No: It will not allow for checking submissions of students against each other or previous classes & already stored student papers in the repository.

Yes: It will allow for checking against the material over the internet against that particular document/assignment for match. No: It will not allow for checking against the material over the internet against that particular document/assignment for match.

f. Check against journals, periodicals and publications:

Exclude Bibliography: Yes: It will exclude bibliographic text, cited work or reference section in the assignment/document from being checked while generating originality report. No: Everything written in the assignment even under cited references will be checked and stated in the originality report.

h. Exclude Quoted Material: Yes: It excludes text written in quotation marks in the assignment from being checked and matched in the originality report. No: Text written in quotes will also be checked for matches in the originality report.

i. Exclude Small Matches: Yes: It will allow excluding matches that are of no significant length in the form set by the teacher/instructor in terms of word or percentage. No: It will catch even smallest possible match found and stated in the originality report.

i. No groups: There are no sub groups, everyone is part of one big community. ii. Separate groups: Each group member can only see their own group, others are invisible. iii. Visible groups: Each group member works in their own group but can also see other groups. Visible: Choose whether to “Show or Hide” the assignment from student’s view. A hidden assignment will be displayed greyed out on the main course page for those with teacher, creator, manager or admin type roles but invisible to students. ID number: Setting an ID number provides a way of identifying the activity for grade calculation purposes. If the activity is not included in any grade calculation then the ID number field may be left blank. The ID number can also be set in the grade book, though it can only be edited on the activity settings page.

4. Restrict Access:

a. Allow Access From/To: This option determines when students can access the activity via a link on the course page. The difference between access from/to dates and availability settings for the activity is that outside the set dates the later allows students to view the activity description whereas access from/to dates prevent access completely. b. Grade Condition: This setting determines any grade conditions which must be in order to access the activity. Multiple grade conditions may be set if desired. If so, the activity will allow access when ALL grade conditions are met. c. User Field: You can restrict access based on any field from the user’s profile. d. Activity Completion Condition: This setting determines any activity completion conditions which must be met in order to access the activity. Note that completion tracking must first be set before an activity completion condition can be set. Multiple activity completion conditions may be set if desired. If so, access to the activity will only be permitted when ALL activity completions are met. e. Before activity can be accessed: Show activity greyed-out with restriction information & Hide activity entirely: These options allow you to set the display of the restricted item on the course page. i. Show activity greyed-out ii. Hide activity entirely

5. Activity Completion: a. Completion Tracking: If enabled, activity completion is tracked either manually or automatically based on certain conditions. Multiple conditions may be set if desired. If so, the activity will only be considered complete when ALL conditions are met. A tick next to the activity name on the course page indicates when the activity is complete. b. Require Review: This option allows that the student must view this activity to complete it.

c. Require Grade: If enabled, the activity is considered when a student receives a grade. Pass and fail icons may be displayed if a pass grade for the activity has been set.

d. Expected Completed On: This setting specifies the date when the activity is expected to be completed. The date is not shown to the students and is only displayed in the activity completion report.

Step#05: When you will click on “save and return to the course” then course page will appear showing Turnitin assignment.

Step#06: Click on Turnitin assignment on course page, assignment summary will appear.

Step#07: Click on pencil icon ,assignment dates (start date, due date,post date) can be

changed.

Start Date: This option allows the teacher to pick the date that your students will begin to

have access to this assignment.

Due Date: Sets the date on which assignment will be due.

Post Date: The Cut-off date is the date beyond which students will not be able to submit

their assignments. The Post Date settings depends upon teacher he may set the post date to

the same value as the Due Date or may set the Post Date to one minute or one day after the

Start Date.

Step#08: Click on “Sbmiit paper” tab. Two (02) options will appear.

a. File Upload: It allows to uolpad a file.

b. Text Submission: It allows to submitt text instead of uploading file.

When students submit their work, following window appears. Student can upload his/her

work by clicking upon tab.

Step#10: Click on “View Report”, a Turnitin “User Agreement” will be presented in order to proceed with the assignment creation. Click on “I agree’ to continue”.

Originality Report Generated. The Originality Report can be accessed by clicking the Originality pane selector. Sections of the submitted document are matched against sources. Additional detail can be obtained by clicking upon each source or by selecting additional detail in the top of the Originality sidebar.

To automatically submit user submissions to Turnitin upon upload set this option to 'Submit

to Turnitin Immediately on Upload'. Alternatively you can set the option to require the submi

ssion to be stored in Moodle and manually uploaded to Turnitin by selecting the option 'Revi

ew Upload before Submitting to Turnitin'.

b. Results per Page: Sets the number of results to display in the Submission Inbox.

ii. Grade Settings:

a. Grade Display: This option sets the display mode for grades the options are display as a percentage

or display as a fraction i.e; 45/60

b. Auto Refresh Grades / Scores:By default after each call to Turnitin the M

oodle integration plug in will attempt to automatically pull down changes made whi

le in within Turnitin.You can use this option to turn off this feature, however in orde

r to maintain synchronisation between both systems you will need to frequently ma

nually refresh grades and originality scores from within Moodle. c. Submission List: This option will allow you to list all enrolled users

regardless of whether they have made a submission.

iii. Common Settings:

a. Comments Remain Editable: This option allows you to set the window of time in which a user may edit the comments they make regarding a submission. Users with the ability to grade submissions e.g. tutors, may change their own comments at any time.

This option sets the maximum number of characters allowed in a comment. The default setting for this option is 800 characters.
