Direct Submit (All Modalities) There are times when an instructor may wish to submit a student response (file, text from
discussion, etc.) to Turnitin. Below are the steps for how to directly submit an assignment using
TII via http://www.turnitin.com.
1. Instructors can Direct Submit student work through turnitin.com.
2. If you have not used Turnitin, as an external tool, via Canvas (since the update in
August, 2016), it is necessary to first go to your Sandbox in Canvas and create a Turnitin
assignment. This will create your account on turnitin.com.
Instructions on how to create a Turnitin assignment, see pages 2-4 of this document.

Using the Similarity Report The Similarity Report can be accessed from the Gradebook. The grey icon indicates that the
Similarity Report has not been generated yet. Keep in mind, this could take a few minutes and
in some cases up to 24 hours. The colored icon indicates the Similarity Report score based on
the percentage of matches to the submission repository.
The Similarity Report can also be accessed from the Speedgrader.

The Similarity score appears and is color-coded based on percentage of matches.
Blue 0% matched material
Green 1 – 24 % matched material
Yellow 25 – 49% matched material
Orange 50 -74% matched material
Red 75-100% matched material
Please note: This Similarity score does include quoted material as well as references. This is a
change from previous Turnitin settings and may result in a higher overall score than previous
versions.
It is very important to review the Similarity Report as a whole, rather than just the number and
color. Click on the color-coded score to open the full Similarity Report in a new window called
the Document Viewer. This can be done from either the Gradebook or the Speedgrader.

In the Similarity Report, all of the top sources found to match the submission are listed in the
sidebar to the right of the paper contents. These are color-coded in the actual submission in the
center of the page.
This is a birds-eye view of the references used and the frequency they appear. This provides an
outline of how many references were used and can be helpful when determining adherence to
assignment requirements (i.e. minimum of 3 peer-reviewed references). Also, if you wanted
students to cite a particular reference, it will appear here.
The Match Overview information can be used to review proper citations within the text as well
as identify quoted material. Reviewing the paper with this information can be very insightful
and can provide some additional avenues for supporting your students in their writing.
