    INTRODUCTION

    Power Line Telecommunications (PLT)

    aims at the utilization of the electricity power lines for

    the transmission of data

    gains importance that every building is connected to the

    power grid that cannot be matched by either the

    telecommunications or cable TV wiring

    WHY LIMITED EXPLOITATION?

    PLT technology is young and still evolving; its capabilitiesstill need expansion

    There is a lack of standardization and interoperability ofPLT-relevant products

    Broadband over power lines (BPL)

    Can plug the computer into any electrical outlet in the

    home, instantly have access to high-speed Internet

    Tested in several cities around the United States and the

    United Kingdom

    BROADBAND TO HOME

    electricity and the RF used to transmit data vibrate at certain

    frequencies

    If electricity spikes at a frequency that is the same as the RF

    then it will cancel out that signal and the data transmission

    will be damaged en route

    BPL bypasses this problem by using medium-voltage lines --

    the data can only travel so far before it degrades

    BROADBAND TO HOME

    special devices installed called repeaters take in the data and

    repeat it in a new transmission, amplifying it for the next

    journey

    CT coupler allows the data on the line to bypass transformers

    Transformer's job is to reduce the 7,200 volts down to the

    240-volt standard

    some carry the signal in with the electricity on the power line,

    while others put wireless links on the poles and send the

    data wirelessly into homes

    PROBLEMS FOR PLT USERS

    could cause malfunctions of your electrical equipment,

    such as battery chargers, audio-video systems

    causes interference to important radio services, the user

    might be held responsible for the damage

    Since all users share the same physical access, data

    sniffing can be done and security is a problem

    achievable bandwidth and download rate is significantly

    lower than customers expect

    To receive telecommunication services and energy from

    the same company will create a dangerous new monopoly

    More work required in the area of PLT hardware product

    development, production of appropriate standards and new

    software applications

    improvements both in terms of capabilities (speed,reliability), investment and exploitation costs,

    CONCLUSION

    PLTopens up new opportunities for the mass provision of local,

    last-mile access at a reasonable cost

    offers a permanent on-line connection, as symmetric, two-

    way communication, has good performance, very goodgeographical coverage, relatively cheap

    Faces problems -- PLT as a provider of the local accessinfrastructure,PLT-based development of applications and

    services

    play a significant role as a provider of necessary InformationSociety local infrastructure
