Krems Krems is the eastern gateway to the Wachau Valley, just a short drive from Vienna. Set in one of Europe‘s most picturesque river landscapes, the city’s history stretches back more than a thousand years.

The historic town centre is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Over the centuries, builders and architects have created a unique character that has been lovingly cared for and preserved.

These efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 1975 Krems was designated a Model City for Historical Preservation, and in 2000 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

All this history could give the impression that time has stood still. But in reality, Krems is very open to modern life: contemporary art and culture play an important role, adding variety and energy to public spaces throughout the city.

Krems also has a rich tradition as an economic and educational hub. It is a major centre of Austrian education with state-of-the-art infrastructure and public transportation. Students from all over the world play a vital part in the life of this city.

Krems has been named the town with the highest living standard in Austria:

It harmoniously blends traditional and modern values It is well-known for its culture and hospitality It creates an excellent climate for studying and research
