CEDUNA

Ceduna lies on the coast of The Great Australian Bight and heralds the end of the Eyre Peninsula. Its past lay with the sea and at one time it had a commercial fishing fleet. Many Greeks had settled here and the two big fishing families in Adelaide, Angelakis and Raptis, had their origins in Ceduna. Times change and cereal is the big earner now.

The caravan park lies just out of town in the sand hills of Bosanquet Bay.

Many caravaners are attracted to Ceduna because they want to fish for King George Whiting ; a fish that enjoys a huge reputation.

You really need a tinny (small aluminium boat) to catch this fish and lines of these little boats bob about just offshore on Bosanquet Bay.

Bosanquet beach is ordinary but the big sky and electrical storms give it a presence. You can feel the open ocean as you now face straight down to Antarctica.

Grain pours into Ceduna from all over Eyre Peninsula. Huge silos dominate the skyline at Port Thevenard.

And the local paper tells of the arrivals and departures of these boats.

Gypsum and salt also leave from here.

A very colourful lizard keeps Gee and Cee company as they watch.

The silos at Ceduna are big but there is often overflow.

Massive bunkers hold the surplus near the caravan park.

One side of the fishing industry continues to do well. Round from Ceduna at Denial Bay there are flourishing oyster beds. The light and seascapes are beautiful here but you get bitten to death with insects.

Ceduna has a fish factory that sells to the public and it is a highlight of a town visit.

With such a place you can just feast up on spanking fresh and reasonably priced fish for days and days. Armed with a microwave and a bread machine Cee gave cooking the push. You could steam the prepared fish using the fish auto cook button on the microwave in minutes and soak up the juices with your own bread.

Cities in Australia are wonderful but to have seafood in many parts of coastal Oz is to die for.
