Hello to a new year and a very busy one to say the least. Thanks to all who attended my installation, I think it went pretty well.

My theme this year is dedicated to Community Development/involvement. I want all the Brethren to do some kind of project in there community that benefits all. It can be reading to a school/child that needs help. Local government or individual community programs, see what is out there. Make an effort to make the community a better place or even help some one in need with out expecting a return.

We are going to visit some of our Veterans that are shut in or disabled; I am working on that program and will have more soon.

Give our education Chairman your support as this is where we have to start to change things that are needed. Keeping Brothers (new and existing) involved in our fraternity is one of the up most priorities or should be for us.

All the committees are vital to the long range plan of our beloved fraternity.

I want to change the way we bring in new Brothers by having them get to know us and we to know them. Too many are brought in and left on the side lines and quite frankly that is boring to be here and do the same things every month after month. There are plenty of committees to get involved in, do not wait to be asked. The Chairmen welcomes your involvement and input.

We are trying a new way to have our new Brothers advance in there degrees. The first month is dedicated to Entered Apprentices the second month to Fellows of the Craft and the third to Master Masons. This hopefully will give the new Brothers time and a target date to prove up on there proficiencies. If we receive partitions during the three months we can get to know the applicants better. If you recommend some one you will be called upon to mentor that person and follow his advance.

Last but in no way least, always, always put your Family, God, and your job first before Freemasonry. With out there support we could not do what we do.

Fraternally

Wow, the New Year is here. The old one went and came like a thief in the night. It was full of challenges that tried our character as individual masons and as a lodge. The truth is that we did well and faced the adversity head on. There was no running for cover, no cowering, no indecision. The lessons and the character building we had last year have made us stronger and better than ever. There is a new and more passionate interest in the lodge and the work of masonry. This coming year and the one to follow will be years of new ideas with respect and adoration for the old ones. Nothing is being left behind, only more will be added. If we are to grow and succeed we must live up to the ideals of our ancient brethren and we must create anew for this age and the lives we find ourselves living now. There is a great deal of work to be done my brothers, always remember that the root to work means worth, so the worth we put into masonry will add to its value as well as our own. On a final note and all the seriousness we must remember fellowship and why we became mason, to enjoy (have fun) the company of good men with very like ideals.

God Bless,

Greetings and salutations from the south

Thank you all for the vote of confidence. I

am deeply honored and feel very humble

in the honor you bestowed on me as you

Junior Deacon. WM Elect Mike Clark,

Senior Warden Scott Keiser and I will do

everything in our power to make the 2011

year of Nellis Lodge #46 not only a

successful one but a memorable one.

I am also proud to announce that our WM

has appointed me as Chairman of the

Long Range Planning Committee. This

excellent concept will not only result in a

successful plan for our Lodge in the coming year, but will assist

officers in future years in planning successful Lodge years.

Together with other committees implemented by WM, we are

looking forward to a successful and fun filled 2011 Lodge year and

I am looking forward to hearing from you if you have any

suggestions or comments that will benefit our Lodge in the coming

year.

Finally, I will be writing a series of articles on our Masonic Code of

Conduct to help all of us in our desire to become better Masons. I

heard someone say, “We do not take

a man and make him good, we take

a good man and make him better.”

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas

and Happy New Year and to all, God

Bless!

From the Sidelines By Brian Higgins

The "Working Tools Lecture" of the Entered Apprentice De-

gree alludes to one or more of the following citations from

the New Testament:

Mark 14:58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple

that is made with hands, and within three days I will build

another made without hands.

Acts 7:48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples

made with hands; as saith the prophet.

2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of

[this] tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of

God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heav-

ens.

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good

things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle,

not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building.

Hebrews 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places

made with hands, [which are] the figures of the true; but

into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for

us.

11

You probably noticed that there is an ad next to this article

on page 10 describing the PayPal option for paying your dues. As

some of you know PayPal was unavailable for a short time due to an

administrative glitch, but it’s back up now and running fine.

This year the new Trestleboard committee is looking for

additional financial backing by soliciting more advertisers. This may

be a good way for you to let the brethren know about your business

or profession. We currently have six advertisers but we’re aiming for

fifteen. These ads defray the expense of the Trestleboard and also

go toward future equipment upgrades. If you are interested, contact

the secretary’s office and leave a message.

Anyone who wishes to submit a Trestleboard article may do so

electronically by submitting it as a WORD attachment. Send it to

[email protected]. no later than the 10th day of the month.

Remember, it will continue to be on a first come first served basis.

I’ve been asked numerous times about the office hours. As you

know this is part time job for me and I fit it around my work schedule.

I’m available in the office Monday through Friday 7:00am to 8:00am,

Tuesday 6:00pm to 7:00pm and most Saturdays 8:00am to noon.

You may call the office at (702) 387-0046 any time to make an

appointment or ask for assistance. Make sure to leave a message. I

will get back to you at my earliest convenience.

We’re going to have another ambitious year full of activities that

should inspire and reconnect the brethren. This office will be the

main point of coordination for most of these activities. One of these

events was started by W. Bro. John Gjonola, the Helldorado Parade.

It’s our goal to increase the participation to show the public about

how vibrant Nevada Masonry continues to be. We have always had

a great time and had great crowd support.

I hope to see all of you at the January meeting!

Sincerely & Fraternally,

Jim

From the “Handbook for Mankind”

Submitted by Brian Higgins

"There exists a technique for coming to realize that nothing at all

is worth getting or being. It consists in examining things deeply enough to discover that in the presence of craving one has feelings of a certain kind towards getting and being; that when desire has given way completely to insight into the true nature of things, one's attitude towards getting and being is rather different. As an easy example let us consider eating. One man's eating accompanied by craving and desire for delicious tastes

must have certain features that distinguish it from another man's eating, which is accompanied not by desire, but by clear comprehension, or insight into the true nature of things. Their eating manners must differ, their feelings while eating must differ, and so must the results arising from their eating.

"Now what we have to realize is that one can still eat food even

though one lacks all craving for delicious tastes.

"Freedom from craving brings many incidental benefits. A body

and mind freed from craving can look for and partake of food

motivated by intelligent discrimination and not, as before, by

desire. If we wish to break free from suffering, following the

footsteps of the Buddha and the arahants, then we must train

ourselves to act with discrimination rather than with craving.

From Junior Last month our Junior Past Master didn’t get a chance to post his farewell address, so here it is.

My Dear Brothers:

Well, the year is drawing to a close, and it is time for me to step down as your Worshipful Master, and pass the reins over to a new line of Officers.

My brain is jumbled as so many thoughts are racing through my head, so bear with me.

First of all, I wish to thank my Officers this year for the support they gave their Lodge and I this year. Your Officers had many firsts. This was the first time that ALL your Officers took the Masonic leadership course. We had a Master of ceremonies that actually knew his job, and filled in at all the chairs. Your Senior & Junior Wardens, Senior Deacon, Master of Ceremonies and Chaplain have all conferred degrees this year. The list goes on and on. With a little more practice and help, I am confident that Nellis Lodge has a great line of Officers for the coming years.

I also want to thank our Past Masters for all your support and assistance. We always say that you are the backbone of Freemasonry, but I don’t think that phrase does you enough justice. The support, help, and guidance you gave me this year has been invaluable, and I thank you for that. While I tried to honor you in many ways this year, I fear that my efforts fell woefully short. You are truly the backbone of Nellis Lodge. There are too many of you to mention,

but rest assured your help was gratefully received and appreciated.

We had a nice year. A couple of our accomplishments were the family picnic and the Past Master degree. For too long, we neglected holding family events, and the picnic was a great success! We had 28 Past Masters participate in the Past Master degree, and had two more on the sidelines volunteering to help wherever needed! We also visited other Lodges, including our Brothers at Phillip E. Bell. Having inter-lodges relationships is important. We cannot stay in a shell. We lost our Traveling Trophy, and were unable to get it back, but I am confident that our new WM will take care of that.

As you know, we also had our share of problems, some of them severe. As a result of those problems, I am sad to say that a lot of the things I wished to do this year was cancelled; however, it is my hope that perhaps we can do some of them in the near future. Our baseball night was never done this year. I suspect this was because our senior Warden knew that I would have thrown the first pitch much better than he did! J Our Chris Hodapp event was cancelled, as was the outdoor Degree at Keyhole Canyon, and a few other things I had planned. I am sorry for that. We also never got to visit to a Lodge up North. For too long, there is a misconception that Nevada is divided by “North and South”, and I wanted to try and dispel that myth, and bring us closer. Due to the problems we faced, it just could not be done.

There are two items that I am also sad to say were not accomplished in my year, and I feel I must mention them in the hope that our new Worshipful Master will take them into consideration and implement. These are things that I feel are desperately needed to be done.

One thing we did partially with the

Page 17: Trestleboard, January 2011

17

family picnic and family dinner, but I hope that we will continue to hold more family events. We are here due to our wives covering up for us and allowing us to come to Lodge. It is also important for us to get to know each other’s Masonic families.

The other thing I believe we need to do is implement a Phone Tree to keep in touch with our members. Last year, I took it upon myself to call every Member in our database. The task took me 2 ½ months to complete. Obviously, one man cannot do this alone. But I heard from some our Brothers who were in great distress, and we would not have known without the call. EVERY ONE of them appreciated the call. When we admit a new Brother into our order, we cannot just throw a dues card at him and forget him. We are all Brothers. I sincerely hope that we can find a way to keep in touch with each other.

To the Officers of Nellis: I thank you again for your help and service. You did a great job this year. However, this is by no means the end. You will have a new Worshipful Master to serve. I urge you to give him as much support as you did me. Re-commit yourselves to learning the ritual and performing your duties. Please take them seriously. Being an Officer of the Lodge is not something to be taken for granted; it is a privilege. If you cannot or will not commit to it, you must consider stepping down and letting somebody else take the job, for if you don’t, not only are you hurting yourself, you are doing a great disservice to your Lodge. I am proud of your accomplishments this year, and hope you will continue with as much or more enthusiasm.

To our WB Secretary, James Tiberius Greely III, PM (and who knows how many letters go behind that!) J: thank you for all

your help. It is said that without a good secretary, the lodge cannot function and is in deep trouble. In you, we have a great secretary, who is always 1 or 2 steps ahead of the game. You are not only an invaluable asset to our Lodge; you are a fixture of our Lodge. I am proud to count you as my friend.

Finally, to all my Brothers in Nellis: I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your entrusting me this year to be your Worshipful Master. Words cannot describe what I feel: pride, gratitude, humbled, apprehension. I have led a pretty plain life. Aside of my marriage to my wife, Pam, and the birth and adoption of my children, this has been the biggest honor that has ever befallen me. I went through many things this year. I suffered betrayals, humiliations, and tribulations, but also felt your support, pride, happiness and Brotherhood. I also was extremely overwhelmed by the support I received from all of you, my Brothers from Nellis and throughout the State. It was an incredibly humbling experience to see how many Brothers supported me this year during those troubling times. And while I cannot say that your support made all the problems this year worthwhile, it sure helped me overcome them.

And now, it is time for me to fade away and become you newest “JUNIOR” Past Master. I suspect that this will be a hard thing to do. I have sat in a chair ever since I was an Entered Apprentice, unofficially, of course, and must now get used to being a sideliner. I have tried to make our meetings fun and interesting, and I hope that I have met at least some of your expectations. I promise you that I will proudly sit in the sidelines, and join the list of Past Masters who sit there, supporting and helping our Lodge in any way I can.

Thank you, and see you in Lodge!

Warmly and Fraternally,

Arcangelo Cocco, “JUNIOR” PM

To All My Brothers:

Happy Brothers Day

To all my Brothers out there trying to win the battles!

Be the kind of man that when your feet hit the floor each morning the

devil says "Oh &#!%, he's up!"

Brother, life is too short to wake up with regrets.

So love the people who treat you right.

Love the ones who don't, just because you can.

Believe everything happens for a reason.

lf you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.

if it changes your life, let it.

Kiss slowly.

Forgive quickly.

God never said life would be easy. He just promised it would be worth it.

Today is Brother's day, send this to all your brothers, fathers, sons.

lf you get back 7, you are loved.

Happy Brothers Day!

I LOVE YA BROTHER'?!!

To the cool men that have touched my life. Here's to you!!

A real Brother walks with you when the rest of the world walks on.

Send to all your Brothers because the fake ones won't

Days End

ln The coolness of the evening…

When the sun is going down.

The shadows of the stately trees...

Are long upon the ground.

A gentle breeze comes blowing.

Blue skies begin to gray.

Sunset's rays are glowing

All mark the end of day.

The birds have ceased their singing.

And seek their nightly place.

The stars begin appearing...

And till the darkening space.

The toils of this day are over.

Now is the time for

With comfort in the knowledge

That l have done my best.

The dawn will come tomorrow.

And bring a brighter day.

And all the disappointments

Should surely pass away.

The noon-day sun. high in the

Will warm my heart and soul,

And be a source-of strength...

To help me reach my goal.

When the day is finished...

And the sun sets in the west.

can say within my heart...

"Today. I did my best!"
