Diesel engines as commonly fitted are fuel inefficient

Current practice is to fit separate diesel engines for:

◦ Propulsion

◦ Electrical generation

Drawbacks:

◦ Expensive to install

◦ Expensive to maintain

◦ Inefficient as not optimally loaded

◦ Expensive to run

◦ Life cycles

Generator sized to meet peak load

Average load is less (typically 30% of peak)

Fuel efficiency is poor

There is no real COMMERCIAL alternative to burning fossil fuels for the foreseeable future

So we MUST

“burn diesel more efficiently”

“We have spent a number of years testing the

theories at a prototype level of RD&I

The Marine-I Grant has funded testing equipment to test the theories to move our product from TRL3 to TRL6

The data has to prove accuracy of theory bench marking in all live testing in our test facility

The OEG project has been developed using the company's own funds and shareholder investment over the last couple of years to get a product that can and will be disruptive to the market. The OEG provides vessel wide power generation, control, monitoring and ultimately a better use of systems than any product currently on the market. The background IP has been developed by and is owned by the company but the business understood that to develop its full potential then collaboration was going to be needed. A lot of work has been undertaken with a number of commercial partners, the lead partner based in the US. Meetings with partners in both the UK and the US have benefitted the development of the project in the last six months to the point where the technology has been developed where phase II testing in a controlled and on-engine environment is now required.

The product improves use of and reduces the cost of power on a vessel by as much as 30% and is a renewable source of energy in that the OEG system includes the provision of energy storage technology to ensure that all power generated is now consumed to improve the quality of use of the vessel by the owners and renters.

The product has been designed on a "designed for manufacture" basis and has also been focused on ease of fit. No longer will vessels have to be taken out of the water to fit diesel generators (which are replaced on average every five years) but it also can be fitted to existing engines without the need for holes to be drilled into the hull.

In summary the finished product will be more cost effective to fit than a diesel generator, will be significantly cheaper to run and will provide a better and more efficient lifestyle for users. Added to the fact that this is a renewable source of energy and that running a generator just to power the vessel will no longer be required the sales of these systems once fully tested and final production models are approved are expected to be in £10ms as US Partner market data has shown.

The project funds are required for the build and fit out of a fully enclosed and controlled test rig within the company's new premises at Hayle Marine Renewables Park.

Alongside the build costs for the test site, the test rig and ancillary items are needed as well as test engines from the two largest engine manufacturers in the marine diesel market (Yanmar and Volvo who together have an 80% market share.

The total cost of the project will include all items required to build a cutting edge facility that will not only allow the development of the OEG to market readiness but will also be able to be used for further development as the business looks to other R&D projects relating to propulsion as part of its R&D strategy in the next few years.

Partners within the project are: Lead partner is a publicly listed Inc based in the US who have previously funded some of the product development and will as part of the agreement have access with the product to the US market and will pay TML an agreed royalty as part of that agreement. Large UK based pan-European business based in Wales a large manufacturer and distributor of battery technology who have worked closely with TML to ensure the specific system aligns with the battery technology being developed. A third partner is an SME based in Holland and has worked on the development of a suitable invertor product that maximises the benefits and therefore efficiency of the OEG. Finally a marine consultancy business has provided at-cost support in terms of technical advice and guidance to the project which has allowed Triskel to develop the product at below market rate costs for a project of this size

Vary the diesel engine speed in order to match the electrical load to the optimum load for the engine◦ Requires precision power measurement and control

◦ On small vessels, requires DC to AC conversion

Use the generator to charge large storage batteries and use the batteries to service the electrical load:◦ Generator is only run at optimum load and then

shut down when batteries are charged

The power required to rotate the propeller varies with engine revs

The engine is almost always operating off its optimum load

Testing has proved that additional load on the engine increases fuel efficiency and can provide “free” electricity

Add an additional, variable load to the propulsion engine to bring it on to its optimum load line

The most useful form of additional load is highly efficient power generation directly coupled to the main engine◦ Requires precision power measurement and control

◦ Requires energy storage (batteries)

◦ In lots of applications, removes the need for a separate generator

◦ Commercial vessels with complex and varied operational profile

◦ Pilot boats

◦ Offshore support vessels

◦ Hydrographic vessels

◦ Harbour patrol boats

◦ Recreational vessels with a high house load or a desire for autonomy

ALL OF THE ABOVE WILL SEE SIGNIFICANT ROI

FROM THE OEG SYSTEM

Unit cost of energy (kWh):

◦ Stand alone generators £1.12 / kWh

◦ Hybrid power £0.88 / kWh

Fuel for electrical generation (l):

◦ Stand alone generators 24,000 l

◦ Hybrid power 17,000 l (-30%)

Fuel for propulsion (l):

◦ Conventional propulsion 19,500 l

◦ On engine generator (OEG) 14,300 l (-26%)

ROI vessel dependent but ranges 9-36 months

Based upon usage, duty cycles and configuration
