Orders of Worship and Announcements January 10 & 11, 2009
Our re-creation in baptism is an image of the Genesis creation, where the Spirit/wind moved over the wa-
ters. Both Mark's gospel and the story in Acts make clear that it is the Spirit's movement that distinguishes
Jesus’ baptism from John's. The Spirit has come upon us as upon Jesus and the Ephesians, calling us God’s
beloved children and setting us on Jesus’ mission to re-create the world in the image of God’s vision of jus-
tice and peace.

WELCOME TO THE SATURDAY NIGHT SERVICE AT TRINITY
While ours is a traditional Lutheran parish with traditional Lutheran worship at two of our Sunday morning worship services, Saturday night is different! We use a Lutheran order of worship and Lutheran liturgies, but they are informal in nature and varied in instrumentation. Dress is relatively casual and variety is the order of the day. While the texts read and the sermon preached are identical to our Sunday worship services, the atmosphere is quite different. Worship begins at 6:30 p.m., however, we gather to sing at 6:20 p.m. and the musicians practice beginning at 6:05 p.m. You are welcome to come as early as you like to prepare for worship.
This evening we use the new Setting Six from the ELW for a service of Holy Communion.

COMMUNION: All baptized believers are welcome to the communion rail this evening. Please sign a communion card from the pew rack if you have not done so yet this year and hand it to the person who directs you forward. Communion is by intinction, that is, the wafer is dipped in the wine and placed on your tongue. Children who do not yet commune are invited with their families to the altar rail to receive a blessing. You are encouraged to join in the singing of the hymns and to respond “Amen” as the ele-ments are received.

PAGES 147-155 provide some interesting background information on the pattern of our worship. HYMN NUMBERS, in bold, refer to hymns 151 thru 893 in the back of the ELW. LESSONS are found both in the bulletin and the pew bibles. You may want to prepare your Bible ahead of time. (A note of caution - the Old and New Testaments are numbered separately, so both Genesis and Matthew start on page 1).
OUR LITURGY is taken from Setting II, a new ELW setting beginning on page 116.

+ + + WORD + + +
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song.
FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-5 Pew Bible, OT pg. 5
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 29 - (6:30) Read responsively, (8:30 & 10:45) Sung responsively

1Ascribe to the | LORD, you gods, ascribe to the LORD glo- | ry and strength. 2Ascribe to the LORD the glory | due God's name; worship the LORD in the beau- | ty of holiness. 3The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of | glory thunders; the LORD is upon the | mighty waters. 4The voice of the LORD is a pow- | erful voice; the voice of the LORD is a | voice of splendor. 5The voice of the LORD breaks the | cedar trees; the LORD breaks the ce- | dars of Lebanon; 6the LORD makes Lebanon skip | like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a | young wild ox. 7The voice | of the LORD bursts forth in | lightning flashes. 8The voice of the LORD | shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilder- | ness of Kadesh. 9The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the | forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD all are | crying, "Glory!" 10The LORD sits enthroned a- | bove the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for- | evermore. 11O LORD, give strength | to your people; give them, O LORD, the bless- | ings of peace.
SECOND READING Acts 19:1-7 Pew Bible, NT pg. 145
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." 4Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied — 7altogether there were about twelve of them.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia pg. 124

*GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11 Pew Bible, NT pg. 35
The holy gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.
4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is more power-ful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated
SERMON GETTING WET FOR THE LORD Pastor Sanford C. Mitchell *HYMN OF THE DAY Christ, When for Us You Were Baptized ELW 304 *WHAT WE BELIEVE: BAPTISM - adapted from Luther’s Small Catechism
10
(For the complete text, see pages 1164-1165 of this hymnal.)
In today’s Gospel we heard of Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan River. What is baptism and what does this mean for us? Baptism is not simply plain water. Instead, it is water used according to God’s command and connected with God’s Word.
What then is this word of God? Where our Lord Christ says in Matthew 28, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
What gifts or benefits does baptism grant? It brings about forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe it, as the words and promise of God declare.
How can water do such great things? Clearly the water does not do it, but the word of God, which is with and alongside the water, and faith, which trusts this word of God in the water.
What then is the significance of such a baptism with water? It signifies that the old person in us with all sins and evil desires is to be drowned and die through daily sorrow for sin and through repentance, and on the other hand that daily a new person is to come forth and rise up to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.
Where is this written? St. Paul says in Romans 6, “We have been buried with Christ by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
