Note from the Associate Pastor

I like to think of the season of Lent (February 14 to March 31) as a time of addition rather than subtraction. We sometimes think of Lent in terms of spiritual growth through deprivation: giving up chocolate or meat or Face-book. An alternative is to seek spiritual growth through new learning or new experiences or a new discipline. You have several opportunities for such experiences here at Trinity:

Ash Wednesday Worship: February 14, 7:00 p.m. Interesting juxtaposition, isn’t it: Ash Wednesday on Valentine’s Day! We hope you’ll join us for this meaningful service of worship that sets us on our course through Lent. Note that no dinner will be served before the 7:00 p.m. service.

Prayer and Meditation in the Trinity Sanctuary: On weekdays from 10:00 a.m. until the church office clos-es, you’re invited to make use of the Trinity Sanctuary as, well, a sanctuary. There will be a rotating assort-ment of reading and devotional materials if you’d like to focus your attention, or you may simply engage in a time of prayer and meditation. (Read more about this inside this issue of Tidings.) Maundy Thursday Worship: March 29, 7:00 p.m. The Shannon Hoover Trio will join us as we remember the night of the Last Supper through Scripture, prayer, music, and Communion. In whatever way your observe Lent, it’s my prayer that the Spirit will guide you along a truly blessed way. With you on the journey, Dwight

Who Am I? Who Are You? Have you, or someone in your family, had your DNA tested as a way of establishing ancestry? My sister got a kit as a gift recently and I am anxious for her to “take the test.” My daughter, Elizabeth, tells me that her online “research” indicates that John Mark Stanley (my full name) was a much beloved King of the Isle of Mann. The Isle of Mann hosts a famous and notorious motorcycle race each year, and I like motorcycles….. so it must be true! She suggested that I should contact them and see if they have a spare castle that they would like for us to live in. Excited about the prospect of my upcoming coronation, I decided to read some more about the science of DNA testing. I was drawn to an article by Kristen V. Brown, writing for Gizmodo.com, entitled, “How DNA Testing Botched My Family’s Heritage, and Probably Yours, Too.” She was intrigued by some anomalies in a relative’s testing, so decided to get her own DNA tested by three different companies. SOME of the results were different with each of the three tests. How could this be? It turns out that the labs all got the same DNA “results” but that they all had differing models for how to interpret these results. It was all interesting, but here’s what really stood out: “In truth, your specific ancestors actually have relatively little impact on your DNA. Some 99.99 percent of your DNA is identical to every other human’s. We’re mostly just all the same. But instead of embracing our genetic similarities, we cling to those differences as symbols of what makes us unique. Consumer DNA testing tends to reinforce that—even though the difference that one test reveals might not even exist in another.” We are mostly just all the same! Regardless of all the various ways that we try to differentiate ourselves from one another… we are mostly just all the same. Sure, we are all unique and precious. But at the end of the day, we don’t need to waste so much energy trying to prove our genetic “superiority.” As a nation, and as a culture, we invest a lot of energy in preserving and protecting that which makes us stand out from others. Maybe that energy would be better invested in embracing our overwhelming similarities. Grace and Peace, Mark

February Birthdays

The Session held its regular monthly meeting on January 9. The meeting was opened by a devotional and prayer by Bob Smith. He reminded us that each individual has unique talents and gifts that can be of benefit as we use them in service to God and others. One of the more significant things accomplished that evening was the ap-pointment of Elders to serve the various ministries of the church. The following are the assignments for 2018.

Administration – Bob Smith Building and Grounds – Mark Slaughter Christian Nurture – Judi Weeter and Pamela Campbell Fellowship – Erika McGilley Finance and Stewardship – Tom Karvonen and Jim Smelker Global Missions – Dan Donovan Local Missions – Glenn Walker New Member – Pamela Campbell Personnel – Bob Lux Trinity Preschool – Nancy Kisner and Sally Beghtol Worship – Evans Thibodeau Building Use Coord. – Fitz Sthreshley Endowment Fund – Glenn Walker and Tom Karvonen Hannan Comm. – Erika McGilley and Tom Bridges

Nominating – Evans Thibodeau and Glenn Walker Deacon Liaisons – Nancy Kisner and Sally Beghtol Presby. Women Liaison – Pamela Campbell Memorial Garden Liaisons – Sally Beghtol and Ron Dalrymple Clerk of Session – Duane Johnson Trinity will be participating in a Stewardship Renewal Conference to be held at Montreat. This will be in preparation for our own Stewardship Campaign later in the year. The Session voted to allow the Trinity Annual Report to be made available electronically as well as in print for those who prefer to receive it in that form. This is part of our ongo-ing effort to save both money and trees. The Session received a very posi-

tive report from Finance Ministry con-

cerning the full year of 2017. Trinity

was blessed with a number of unantic-

ipated gifts, as well as the generous

offerings received during the year.

Also expenses were less than budget-

ed, resulting in a very strong financial

position going into 2018.

Presbyterian Women: Making a Difference

For more than 200 years, Presbyterian Women have played a vital role in the mission and ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA). That continues today at the Church, Presbytery, Synod, and Church-wide levels. All Trinity women, as well as women in all PCUSA Churches, are members of Presbyterian Women. Our Pur-pose (…to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study, to support the mission of the church world-wide, to work for justice and peace, and to build an inclusive caring community of women…) is even greater than the circles and gatherings which are such an important part of our worship and fellowship. This year Trinity PW will give over $5,700.00 to organizations like Safelight, The Black Mountain Home for Children and Families, Thrive, the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, and other local and global missions benefitting women and children. In 2018 we have added a new project: raising awareness and working to end human trafficking. The trafficking of human beings, often called modern-day slavery, deprives women, children and men in the US and around the world of their human rights. The majority of those in slavery are women and girls and at least one in five victims is subjected to sexual exploitation. On Sunday, January 28, we held a special Human Trafficking Awareness Worship Service presented by Trinity PW with a sermon by Carol Steele. Partnering with Global and Local Missions, we will present follow-up workshops (starting during the Learning Hour on February 18) as we explore what we as a congregation can do to help end human trafficking and support its victims in our area. If you would like to experience Bible study, worship, and fellowship with loving and supportive sisters, we invite you visit one (or more) of our monthly Circle meetings. You can call the circle moderator for more information ~ or just show up; either way, know you will be welcomed!

Gratitude From Those “Ministered To”

Jane and I have spent much of our pastoral time in our part-time eleven church calls ministering to the sick and critically ill. The shoe has been on the opposite foot during my hospitalizations, nine days at The Lau-rels, and during my weeks of physical and occupational therapy. You have ministered to us with your pray-ers, cards, calls, meals, and pastoral and member visits. Spiritually, we’ve felt support, love, and encourage-ment from pastors and members. You are blessed for being a blessing to us. Thank you. Jack and Jane Presseau

Got Questions? Come to the Inquirer Class!

Presbyterian - what does it even mean? What goes on at Trinity after Sunday mornings? What’s an Elder? A Deacon? Why are there Ministries instead of Committees? Why aren’t the Ministers in charge of every-thing? What would it take to get a tour of the church? Who can use the Columbarium? Why do worship leaders wear robes? How can I get a permanent nametag? How do you join this outfit?

If you have been wondering about the answer to any of these questions, or if you just want to know more about Trinity, please join Mark Stanley in an Inquirer’s Class between worship services at 9:45 on Sunday morning, February 11. “This is a great chance to ask questions, get answers, and make new friends," Stanley says. "You will even learn the meaning of Presbyterian. Come as you are and invite a friend.”

This class is open to church members, visitors, and friends and neighbors in the community. No cost and no registration required. All are welcome!

Trinity Preschool children enjoyed a month full of fun activities and exciting weather! The children in Ms. Donna’s class learned about patterns and then got to show off their new skills when they made their very own patterned bead bracelet!

Ms. Betsy’s class enjoyed learning about snowmen and investigating the ins and outs of a doll house! Our tiny tots enjoyed playing with play-doh, letters and even had a chance to play outside on warm days!

As always we are grateful for the continued support of all the church members!

We hope you enjoy a few pictures of all the fun learning activities that went on this month as Preschool!

Gifts from The Mitten Tree

From the warmth of your hearts… you decorated The Mitten Tree with 108 pairs of warm mittens, gloves, socks, and hats - beautiful clothing much needed and appreciated by the children who received them. Your gifts were delivered with love and best wishes from Trinity to IAM, the Interfaith Assistance Ministry, and many, many children will be warmer this winter - thanks to you!

Sanctuary: A Lenten Observance Lent is a call and an opportunity for us to deepen our relationship with God and renew our commit-ment to walking in the footsteps of Jesus. To that end, you’re invited to make use of the Trinity Sanctuary during the season of Lent as a place for personal meditation, prayer, and reflection. Throughout the season, you’ll find a rotating selection of devotional materials for your use; or, if you prefer a less-focused experience, you’re welcomed to simply sit quietly in private prayer, meditation, or even day-dreaming. The Sanctuary will be open for personal Lenten observance on weekdays, 10:00 a.m. until the church office closes, throughout the season (February 15 to March 31), unless the Sanctuary is needed for a particular function.

Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday, February 4, 2018

The Souper Bowl of Caring is an annual, multidenominational, nationwide ef-fort to fight hunger in local communities. Trinity has participated since 2000, and over the years we’ve collected over $4,000 and 1,500 pounds of food. This year’s Souper Bowl offering takes place on Sunday, Feb. 4. The whole Trinity family is invited to join in this annual effort to fight hunger; donations of food

and money will go to Interfaith Assistance Ministry. Thank you!

Trinity Book Group is meeting on February 22 in the Trinity Room at 1:30 pm. Our book selection is Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J. D. Vance. This book follows Vance’s journey from a troubled, addiction-torn Appa-lachian family to Yale Law School. Please join us for lively discussion and light refreshments.

A NOTE FROM THE BUILDING AND GROUNDS MINISTRY….

We are looking for a few people who are willing to share the checking of the gardens and grounds of the church once or twice a month on a yearly basis (approx. 1 hr./month). This would entail walking the grounds and checking on the trees, shrubs, and other plants including the lawns, and reporting problems to the B&G. If you have gardening experience or an interest to learn and would like to explore this project further, please con-tact Don Osterberg @ 828-697-8198 or [email protected].
