For Triumph Drilling, safety and enabling quality corporate communications supporting business operations are its top priorities. “We will never compromise on safety and we will comply with our safety management system all the time, every time,” says Mr Sean Lattis, Commercial Manager, Triumph Drilling. In order to fulfil these mission critical commitments, the company does not compromise its investment in most advanced communications solutions. “Our IT department strives to be technologically advanced and to pursue new and innovative solutions. For this we need a solutions provider that can support our newer technology,” explains Mr Lattis. The ability to provide safety is a huge hygiene requirement in the oil and gas industry. On top of that, leading drilling contractors are also rising up to bring crew welfare to achieve higher retention especially for experienced crew. As Mr Lattis explains, another challenge is crew satisfaction due to the long hours spent working offshore: “We can address this by having reliable Internet communications on board so our crew can always link up via VoIP or email to communicate with loved ones. Being able to communicate whenever the need arises is an important part of maintaining staff morale.”

SingTel Satellite Solutions: Addressing safety and morale concerns

Triumph Drilling sourced multiple vendors to address their communications needs offshore, and SingTel Satellite became the clear choice in terms of solutions offering, price and service delivery. In addition, with the business now being located in the Asia Pacific region, having a local provider proved the most advantageous option. “We were looking for a vendor that was reputable and trustworthy, offered a good deal, provided good value and was immediately accessible in cases of downtime,” explains Mr Lattis, “and SingTel ticked all the boxes.” SingTel continues to advance the maritime industry by providing ICT solutions that help clients meet new business and economic needs. For example, SingTel was the first to introduce the award-winning stabilised antenna to bring two-way broadband connectivity to smaller vessels with limited deck space. Beyond satellite connectivity and extended coverage, SingTel’s innovative maritime ICT solutions have also been recognised in the industry for their ability to significantly enhance crew welfare, operational efficiency and monitoring and control at sea.

To address Triumph Drilling’s communications needs, SingTel proposed the cost-effective, compact and

award-winning 1.5m antenna on SingTel’s regional maritime VSAT C-band network. A 1Mbps/1Mbps dedicated bandwidth for uplink and downlink supports and scales to IP applications including Microsoft Lync, Microsoft Sharepoint, VoIP phone and the transfer of files to the mainland data centre in Singapore with no congestion. In addition, 4Mbps MetroE land connectivity was proposed between the satellite earth station and data centre to support scalability of up to four rigs, with each rig having a 1Mbps/1Mbps link. This is backed by the 99.9% uptime availability track record SingTel has which went a long way to assuring Triumph Drilling of SingTel’s competence.

With safety being Triumph Drilling’s number one priority, network backup is designed for such that communications continuity for the company during drilling operations is assured – a compulsory requirement for the company’s safety procedures. To this end, a satellite backup service, FleetBroadband, was also built into the solution so that, should the maritime VSAT link be disabled for any reason, the rig has a contingent communication resource.

SingTel also considered Triumph Drilling’s Malaysia-based client, Petronas, in its network architecture. Engineers designed in a dedicated link to Malaysia from the rig so that the oil company can have direct communications with its own team of on-rig employees and receive regular updates on the drilling and extraction expedition.

The need for crew to access the Internet without interrupting daily business operations was critical and SingTel addressed this by providing bandwidth split between crew and corporate users with bandwidth utilisation monitoring. This supports sophisticated and bandwidth heavy applications used for corporate and operations communications including video conferencing calls with multiple users, live video streaming to discuss the drilling activity, electronic file transfers and document sharing, the supply of a bigger and adjustable bandwidth split prioritising communications for corporate and operations was critical.

SingTel bundled into the package its Remote Diagnostic ICT solution so that in the event of downtime, SingTel would be able to remotely troubleshoot and manage all onboard network and communications devices including the router, switch and antenna. SingTel also provides managed service for Triumph Drilling’s network equipment in its data centre.

Key Benefits with SingTel Satellite Solutions

In terms of operational efficiency, the deployment of SingTel’s maritime ICT package has enabled Triumph Drilling to maintain constant communications between its onshore and

offshore businesses for matters such as procurement. With each rig running as a microcosm of a town, with restaurants, hospital, sports facilities, and movie theatre. in addition to its main drilling operations, getting the needed supplies on time was a paramount concern. The higher bandwidth allows for more reliable, secure, rig-to-shore communications via VoIP to better monitor operations, and softcopies of critical documents can be forwarded without issue. However, Triumph Drilling’s biggest concern was with safety and the importance of having constant communication from the rig to shore in the case of any accident or emergency. The ability to utilise video linkage in such cases was mandatory for the company as Mr Lattis explains: “If we have a man injured, we have the option of using a visual link with an offshore medic so we can do all that is needed to supply emergency medical care on board the vessel.”

The plan provides for a total cost of ownership savings of 14.6% compared with the previous provider. With the ICT package in place, Triumph Drilling is also in a better position to retain personnel and upkeep crew morale. “Our crew are on the rig for 28 days straight, so keeping them comfortable with regular contact back home is a crucial part of keeping them happy and maintaining quality operational and safety standards on the rig,” says Mr Lattis. Crew members now have instant access to email and VoIP to stay in contact with loved ones at home. “The additional benefit of course is the lower communications costs,” he adds. He also explains how important it was that not only were these services provided for the crew but that they worked efficiently, “Having constant downtime and poor links communicates to our crew that they are not worth the investment in good equipment. That’s one of the reasons we went with SingTel. We needed that quality assurance.”

With computer to computer VoIP calls or low rate VoIP calls to land lines with a prepaid card, Triumph Drilling has noticed a large drop in its telephone bill. Improving such cost efficiencies has been a major benefit for the company and this is further achieved by SingTel providing bandwidth optimisation and data usage monitoring on the communications back end, as well as cost avoidance through remote diagnosis to automate troubleshooting. The plan provides for a total cost of ownership savings of 14.6% compared with the previous provider.

Rewarding partnerships deliver even greater value

SingTel Satellite believes in forming ecosystem and partnerships to address a wide array of client needs. Unify Square is one such partner that meets the needs of the oil and gas industry. The partnership with Unify Square contributed to Triumph Drilling selecting SingTel as its telecommunications provider.

As an established global technical advisor for unified communications, Unify Square has specific expertise in the oil and gas industry, in particular to the experience to leverage on unified communications to perform end-to-end optimisation. This end-to-end optimisation includes engineering troubleshooting, drilling communications, email, applications and automation. With a strong understanding of the architecture required by rig owners and operators and the need to control bandwidth for core business applications, Unify Square is able to provide solutions contributing to safe, reliable, and efficient outcomes for the business and its employees.

In response to Triumph Drilling’s needs for sophisticated unified communications, Unify Square leveraged on its strength as a global Microsoft Unified Communications system integrator and independent solution vendor. Its team is made up of former Microsoft Lync Product Team and has deep seated insight for the platform.

Furthering a Long-term Relationship

To date, SingTel’s ICT solutions package has been implemented on one rig and implementation on two others is in progress, with a fourth in the planning. Triumph Drilling reports excellent response times as well as offshore and onshore support from the SingTel team. While some fine-tuning was initially required, Triumph Drilling is happy with the 95% rate on crystal clear calls, understanding that the other 5% is due to the weather. Mr Lattis concludes: “Given our experience thus far, with zero unscheduled downtime and rapid response service even offshore, we are confident that SingTel can continue to meet our needs as they change. We plan on sticking with SingTel for the long haul.”

We were looking for a vendor that was reputable and trustworthy, offered a good deal, provide good value and SingTel ticked all the boxes.
