Spring is here, and we are enjoying pleasant weather and an abbreviated state testing season. Seniors have been busy with the Fashion Show (a smashing success) and Prom, among other distractions. If you are a senior par-ent, it’s essential to keep a close eye on your child for the next six weeks to ensure that he or she ends high school on a strong note.
Memorial for M-A parents
In late October, M-A parents Balbir and Kamal Singh were tragically killed by a drunk driver in Menlo Park. In their memory, students in Deb Gutof’s advanced ceramics class conceived the Gardenia Project, a large wall installa-tion that can be viewed in the Administration Building just beyond the front counter. Read more about the project on page 16, and please come visit this beautiful statement of love from the M-A community to the Singh children.
June bond update
As many families are aware, the Sequoia District has placed a $265 million construction bond issue, Measure A, on the June 3 ballot. The elementary district enrollment bulge is headed to M-A, and this bond will allow us to accommodate enrollment growth of approximately four hundred students and address major deferred-maintenance needs.
Approximately $50 million will be directly invested into the Menlo-Atherton campus over the next five to seven years. As part of the bond construction, M-A will add approximately twenty-four new general and specialty class-rooms, mostly in two-story configurations. New staff and student bath-rooms, parking, and food-service stations will also be constructed, in addition to new office space, athletic and PE capacity, and outdoor space for students. In addition, $5 million will be spent updating plumbing, heating systems, and our sixty-five-year-old sewer system.
The entire process will be phased in so that no one group of students will be negatively affected by construction work. Campus master planning will begin over this coming summer, and immediate attention will be given to M-A to prepare the campus for fall 2016. Also, a small, specialized campus will be developed in M-A’s attendance area as part of the bond program. This will

" Kent Kurrus and the M-A orchestra returned from a four-day trip to the World Strides Festival of Gold in Chicago. This was a “best of the best” festival to which only groups that had won gold medals at previ-ous festivals were invited. The orchestra received the coveted gold medal and also placed second overall.
" The following M-A thespians were inducted into M-A Troupe 6035: sophomores Charles Campbell, Tonya Goltsev, Chloe Mauvais, Maddy Shapiro, Natalie Silverman, Ariel Sullivan, Gabrielle Westfield, Henri Wood, and Sophie Zalipsky; juniors Anne Perrone and Kate Rumann; and seniors Constance Carrasco, Nicholas Ivy, and Nathaniel Walker.
" This year’s National Honor Society induction ceremony was held April 9 in the Library. Ya llegó la primavera y estamos gozando del buen tiempo y una temporada corta de examinaciones estatales. With spring break behind us, we are in the final stretch of the year. These last few weeks will see a flurry of PTA activity, with AP tests, the PTA staff-appreciation luncheon, textbook collection, and Grad Night. We hope you will join us in volunteering to help at one or more of these events. Watch BearNotes for information.
The M-A PTA has endorsed Measure A (see p. 1). Passage of this bond will provide funds for the SUHSD campuses to prepare for the additional stu-dents who are expected over the next several years. We hope that you are already registered with eScrip and have your contribution directed to M-A. Each year, the PTA and Boosters share money earned through this program. You may not be aware that

Summer school
The end of this school year is near, and summer is just around the corner. Students who meet the summer school eligibility criteria and are offered a space will be attending summer school at Menlo-Atherton High School.
Session I: June 16 to July 3 Session II: July 7 to July 24 Hours: 8:00 am to 1:30 pm
Students registered for summer school are expected to show up on the first day of the session or they will be dropped. " The last day to make change requests for 2014–15 is May 30. This includes both elective and required courses.
" Class level changes in the fall are limited to space available and therefore are not guaranteed. " All English classes require summer reading. " Students who requested advanced placement (AP) courses, AS chemistry, or AS physics must complete
summer assignments if required. " Please contact teachers for more information regarding summer assignments. " Please note that all students who registered for AP courses will be expected to take the AP exams in May
2015.
Attention, parents of seniors!
" Please remember to visit Infinite Campus at portal.seq.org to check your student’s academic progress and at-tendance.
" Attendance will affect progress toward graduation. More than eighteen absences may result in no credit for a course if at least three are unexcused.
" Progress grades will be available by May 7. Colleges may rescind acceptances if students do not maintain their GPAs.
" Seniors who are enrolled in any APEX class required for graduation must complete course(s) no later than May 30. Students who fail to complete required coursework will not graduate in June and will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremony.
" Graduation this year will take place June 5 at 4:00 pm. " All seniors attending any two-year or four-year public or private college or university must request a final
transcript no later than June 13. Seniors must submit a stamped, addressed envelope, $2.00, and the Final Transcript Request form to Fran Huber.

Career Center Last week, I had an experience that reinforced my belief that some of the true college gems are less well known, yet no less worthy of our attention.
I mentioned in an earlier article that I visit many colleges on “fly-ins” during which I (along with others from all over the United States) learn about a col-lege by spending several days there, meeting faculty and students, touring the campus and its environs, gaining an understanding of the institution. My recent visit to Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, confirmed that this is a perfect example of a college—and a type of college—more of our students should consider.
Don’t we all hope our kids will go to a nurturing school where students and faculty have close academic and personal relationships that lead to research and internship opportunities? Wouldn’t we all love to see our kids on a gorgeous and safe campus with so many activities and cultural events that it’s nearly impossible to choose what to do on a Fri-day night (or any other)? Wouldn’t we all appreciate a college with a thoughtfully designed curriculum that values a culture of engagement and excellence, global and multicultural understanding, and experiential learning? Wouldn’t it be great if all students could develop their critical-thinking skills in an environment that is supportive and encouraging of inquiry? Shouldn’t we be delighted to think of our kids in an atmosphere where there is huge enthusiasm for col-lege athletics—and equal enthusiasm for the arts and other positive outlets for student creativity? Isn’t it ideal to send our kids off to a college where international experience is integrated into the curriculum, and faculty-student groups travel the world to reinforce in the field everything they’ve been discussing in the classroom? (And don’t we want to visit, with our students, a college surrounded by stunning scenery and tempting wineries and restaurants?!)
Linfield showed me an example of everything I would like to see in a college for many of our students who would benefit from a smaller environment—and there are more students who would benefit than might believe they would. There are so many reasons why a college with the same number of students as M-A or even fewer will NOT feel small, and will not feel like an extension of high school. At least once a week I explain to a student why college size and high school size cannot be equated. They’re surprised, but usually they get it.
Are you still holding fast to the belief that students must go to a “big name” college in order to have opportunities for grad school and careers? Take a look at the post-grad statistics of schools like Linfield, and you’ll find no disadvantage whatsoever, and in fact many advantages deriving from the amazing résumés students will have created while in col-lege, and the relationships with faculty that lead to great networking and strong letters of recommendation.
Some students might believe that a more rural school like Linfield wouldn’t offer the full range of nonacademic activi-ties—but those students would be wrong. From on-campus events to trips to nearby Portland, Linfield students enjoy a vibrant college athletic, cultural, and social life. School spirit is alive and well on campuses like Linfield, whether stu-dents are cheering for a football team that has more consecutive winning seasons than any other or proudly represent-ing their college by volunteering in the community schools and neighborhoods.
If the above isn’t enough to convince you that students should take a good look at small colleges where their educa-tion will be personal and tailored, consider the generous merit scholarships offered at schools like Linfield for a varie-ty of “merits”—and the proposition becomes more compelling.
My job would be pretty depressing if I believed, as some students and parents do, that there are perhaps twenty-five colleges in the US worth attending—and those twenty-five happen to be the most selective. As soon as we recognize that selectivity and quality are not synonymous, options and opportunities expand enormously.
Just thought I’d share some of what I learned on my most recent college visit. Next stop: Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, a public college that doesn’t behave much like any public school we know! I’ll visit in late April, and return ready to share what I’ve learned with your students. Alice Kleeman

El Centro de Carreras La semana pasada, tuve una experiencia que reforzó mi creencia de que algunas de las verdaderas joyas de la universidad son menos conocidas, pero no menos dignas de nuestra atención.
Mencioné en un artículo anterior que visito muchas universidades en “fly-ins” en donde yo (junto con otras personas de todos los EEUU) aprendemos acerca de una universidad al pasar varios días allí, conociendo a los profesores y estudian-tes, recorriendo el campus y sus alrededores, obteniendo conocimiento de la institución. Mi reciente visita a Linfield College en McMinnville, Oregón, confirmó que este es un ejemplo perfecto de un tipo de universidad—que más de nues-tros estudiantes deben tomar en cuenta.
¿Qué no todos esperamos que nuestros hijos asistan a una escuela acogedora donde los estudiantes y los profesores esta-blecen relaciones académicas y personales cercanas que conducen a oportunidades de investigación y oportunidades prác-ticas? ¿A caso no nos gustaría ver a nuestros hijos en un campus hermoso y seguro con tantas actividades y eventos culturales que es casi imposible elegir qué hacer en una noche de viernes (o cualquier otra noche)? ¿A caso no apreciaría-mos una universidad con un programa de estudios cuidadosamente diseñado que valore una cultura donde un estudiante participa plenamente en sus estudios para sobresalir, que tenga comprensión global y multicultural, y el aprendizaje expe-rimental? ¿No sería fabuloso si todos los estudiantes pudieran desarrollar sus habilidades de pensamiento crítico en un ambiente de apoyo y alentador a la investigación? ¿No deberíamos estar encantados de pensar en que nuestros hijos están en un ambiente donde hay gran entusiasmo por el atletismo universitario—y el mismo entusiasmo por las artes y otros medios positivos para la creatividad de los estudiantes? ¿No es ideal enviar a nuestros hijos a una universidad donde la experiencia internacional está integrada en el plan de estudios, y grupos de la facultad-estudiantes viajan por el mundo para reforzar en el campo todo lo que han estado discutiendo en el salón de clase? Hay tantas razones por las que una universidad con el mismo número de estudiantes que M-A o menos NO se sentiría pe-queña, y no se sentiría como una extensión de la preparatoria. Por lo menos una vez a la semana le explico a un estudiante por qué el tamaño de la universidad y el tamaño de la escuela preparatoria no se pueden comparar. Se sorprenden, pero usualmente lo entienden.
¿Aún se encuentran aferrados a la creencia de que los estudiantes deben ir a una universidad de “gran nombre” para tener oportunidades de posgrado y carreras? Miren las estadísticas de posgrado de las escuelas como Linfield, y no encontrarán ninguna desventaja, y de hecho muchas ventajas que se derivan del increíble currículum vitae que los estudiantes habrán creado en la universidad, y las relaciones con los profesores que conducirán a grandes redes de contactos y cartas de reco-mendación.
Algunos estudiantes pueden creer que una escuela más rural como Linfield no ofrecería toda la gama de actividades no académicas pero esos estudiantes estarían equivocados. Desde los eventos en el campus hasta los viajes al cercano Portland, los estudiantes de Linfield disfrutan de una universidad vibrante deportiva, cultural, y de vida social. El espíritu escolar está vivo y sano en los campus como Linfield, ya sea si los alumnos están animando a un equipo de fútbol que tiene temporadas ganadoras consecutivas más que cualquier otro o orgullosamente representando a su universidad como voluntarios en las escuelas de las comunidades y vecindarios.
Si lo antes dicho no es suficiente para convencerlos de que los estudiantes deben tomar una buena vista a las universidades pequeñas, donde su educación será personal y a la medida, consideren las becas generosas a base de mérito que se ofrecen en las escuelas como Linfield para una variedad de “méritos” y la proposición se hace más convincente.
Mi trabajo sería bastante deprimente si yo creyera, como algunos estudiantes y padres de familia lo hacen, que hay tal vez 25 universidades en los EEUU a las que vale la pena asistir y esos 25 pasan a ser los más selectivos. Tan pronto como re-conocemos que la selectividad y calidad no son sinónimos, las opciones y oportunidades se expanden enormemente.
Sólo pensé en compartir algo de lo que aprendí en mi más reciente visita a la universidad. La próxima parada: Evergreen State College en Olympia, Washington, una universidad pública que no se comporta como cualquier escuela pública que conocemos. Who’s in Your Teen’s Village?

Do you know who’s in your teen’s village? Who should be there? All teens need to learn to build strong, supportive nonparent relationships for success in school and in life. How can your teen develop this important skill?
In the final event of 2013–14, the M-A Parent Education Series offers an exceptional evening with Kent Pekel, EdD, president and CEO of the Search Institute. The Developmental Assets® framework created by Search Institute is the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States and, increasingly, around the world. Search Institute’s newest research-to-practice initiative focuses on strength-ening “developmental relationships” that help young people attain the psychological and social skills needed for success.
Dr. Pekel is an educator and administrator who has worked at the school, district, state, federal, and univer-sity levels. He holds a BA in East Asian studies from Yale University, a master’s in education from Harvard, and a doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota.
The presentation will include a short video featuring the stories of M-A students affected by nonparent adult mentors, a keynote address by Kent Pekel, and a moderated Q&A with Lisa Medoff, Stanford Univer-sity.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free and sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. The Gardenia Project
A Community Mural Project in Honor of the Singh Family
The Gardenia Project arose after the deadly car accident that took the lives of Balbir Singh and Kamal Singh, par-ents of three M-A students, while they walked their dog in the early evening of October 24, 2013.
Along with the entire M-A community, Deborah Gutof and her advanced ceramics class were deeply struck by the event. They put their sadness to work to produce a com-munity mural project after they learned from the Singh children that gardenias were a household favorite and that Mrs. Singh often spread them throughout their home, al-lowing the fragrance and beauty to fill the rooms.
Throughout December, Ms. Gutof and several ceramics students and Singh friends initiated a 3-foot by 7-foot in-stallation of ceramic gardenias to be hung in time for spring. Over 150 students, teachers, and parents participated
by crafting flowers in the ceramics studio. The goal was to make at least a hundred gardenias, but after only two lunch periods there were more than four hundred.
The Gardenia Project is located in the M-A Administration Building in the hallway across from Mr. Zito’s office. Please take a moment to enjoy this expression of love from the M-A community.

The Great Frame Up on Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park has supported M-A’s Art Department and hosts the Creative Self-Expression Show. The winners in each category receive cash prizes of up to $100. The May 22 reception will be catered by students in Mrs. Klein’s foods class.

Global Visionaries Service Learning Club Presents . . .
The Pajama Drive
Each year twenty to thirty M-A students participate in a yearlong service-learning program called Global Vision-aries (www.gvcoca.org). This year, after seven months of service in the M-A community, students will travel to Guatemala in June to expand their service learning and explore their inner strengths. Each student will bring a large bin filled with donations, which will be delivered into the communities where the students volunteer.

It’s not just a race . . . it’s the BIG BEAR RUN!
It is not too late to be part of this wonderful community event in support of M-A Athletics. Join over 1,000 participants and enjoy our 5k run/walk through Lindenwood. Medals for the top three finishers in various age and gender brackets and trophies for M-A’s fastest girl and boy will be awarded. All M-A students completing the course receive a free M-A Bears decal. Also, students who finish the course in forty-five minutes or less will be entered into a drawing for an iPad Mini, Beat headphones, and valuable gift cards—but they must be present to win. Post-race entertainment includes refreshments, music, interviews with athletes and coaches, and a performance by the M-A dance team. Bring the whole family!
