Common Names
• Often called rainforests• Divided into subdivisions– Evergreen rainforests
• No dry season
– Season rainforests• Short dry periods
– Semi-evergreen forests• Longer dry season
– Moist/dry deciduous forest• Length of dry season increases as rainfall decreases
Food Web
Where?
• Found around the equator• Mostly in South America, Africa, and Southern
Asia
• Example: the Amazon Rainforest– Biggest in the world– In South America
Where?
Climate
• Between 20-25° C (68-77° F)
• Temperatures do not vary much• A lot of precipitation evenly distributed
throughout the year• More than 200 cm of rainfall per year
Plants
• Most of the plants in tropical forests are trees– Many different species
• Vines– Can have as many as 2,500 species
• Ferns• Mosses
Animals
• Monkeys• Insects– Butterflies– Ants– Mosquitos
• Small mammals
Adaptations
• Plants– Leaf shapes and colors• Allow rain to fall off• Darker to take in more sunlight
• Animals– Life in trees
Human Impacts
• More than half of tropical forests in the world have already been destroyed
• It has been estimated that over half of the world’s plant and animal species live in these forests
Fun Facts
• Many spices come from tropical forests– Vanilla, pepper, allspice
• The many trees provide most of the oxygen we breathe
