Digital payment bound to pick up with new technology: FM NEW DELHI, Sept 18: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today expressed hope that digital payment is going to pick up momentum with more advanced tech- nology coming into the market. A lot of people went in for digitisation in terms of mode of pay- ment more out of compulsion rather than finding it a more conven- ient method to transact, but that compulsion created a habit for many, he said after the launch of a mobile app for digital payments developed by Google for India. "We reached a peak figure (after the demonetisation), then it marginally slipped and is now bound to pick up again," he said. Built on the Government-supported Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Tez allows users, free of charge, to make small or big payments straight from their bank accounts, Google said. The app was built for India, working on the vast majority of the country’s smartphones, and is available in English and seven Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu). Tez, a Hindi word which means fast, works in partnership with four Banks -- Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of India (SBI) -- to facilitate the processing of payments across over 50 UPI-enabled banks. "Now, the time has come with application as simple as this that what started as compulsion becomes a matter of convenience and eventually a matter of spending habit as far as Indian people are concerned," the Finance Minister noted. The app is available now for download on Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS). (PTI) NEW DELHI, Sept 18: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has regis- tered a case against officials of Army Medical Corps (AMC) and Medical Council of India (MCI) for their alleged involvement in corruption and sharing of sensitive informa- tion. The probe agency has booked Santosh Kumar, LDC of MCI; Col Ajay Kumar Singh of AMC and others under section 120-B of IPC and various sec- tions of PC Act. In the FIR, registered on September 16, CBI said, "reli- able information was received that Santosh Kumar was in reg- ular contact with B Ramachandhiran, Chairman of Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Puducherry, for sharing sensitive information and help- ing them with respect to some administrative matter regarding inspections and approvals relat- ed to the aforesaid medical col- lege being dealt with by the MCI." The probe agency alleged that Kumar was also in touch with Col Ajay Kumar Singh who is empanelled as an asses- sor with the MCI for inspecting various medical colleges. "Both these public servants were in regular touch with Ramachandhiran and they held personal meetings in this regard, and demanded illegal gratification for rendering sup- port and providing informa- tion at regular intervals," the FIR stated. The agency said Ramachandhrian had allegedly handed over first installment of bribe to them and they had again contacted him to pay the remain- ing amount in Delhi in lieu of showing favour by way of pro- viding the aforesaid information and help in inspections. The CBI said that Col Singh and Kumar, in con- nivance with two other per- sons were also running a rack- et of leaking sensitive infor- mations, with respects to inspections, recognition of courses, number of seats and other administrative matters being dealt by the MCI against various medical colleges and institutions.
