Interna onal Primary Using reading buddies to develop and enhance children’s vocabulary IP6 & IP3 children have joined forces to promote reading abili es at Tunku Putra School
Recently, children from Interna onal Primary 3 and 6 joined together again for shared reading. The children support each other in reading for a real purpose – a shared reading buddy program is a fun, personal and effec ve way to introduce the pleasures of reading to children while improving their reading fluency skills and developing their Personal Values – communica on and coopera on.
IP3 benefit from: Hearing stories read-aloud (modeling of reading fluency, phrasing and expression) and having conversa ons with an older student about topics that interest and involve them (extending their vocabulary, oral language abili es) are just two. Also having regular opportuni es to prac ce familiar reading with 1:1 assistance and having an enjoyable, fun, and posi ve experience with ‘big kids’ – brings our school community closer together.
IP6 benefit from: Further developing their own literacy skills and fostering leadership and problem-solving skills while improved self-confidence that comes from being looked-up to. A very real and important reason to be responsible: and an opportunity to demonstrate their Personal Values.
Benefits of Buddy Reading - Develops social skills Reading buddy programs also help to improve learner’s social skills. A reading session will inevitably raise ques ons and lead to discussions, allowing the learner to not only prac ce their English Language skills, but also learn how to communicate and expand their educa on through interac on and feedback.
Benefits of Buddy Reading Improves confidence and
self-esteem
Reading with a peer takes some of the pressure off the children, allowing them to more easily speak out and not be worried about their mistakes. An increase in confidence through the
interac on with other peers - taking away the dread of
having to speak in front of a whole class.
Benefits of Buddy Reading Improves Literacy Skills
The efficiency of reading buddy sessions has been confirmed by numerous
independent studies that show reading buddy
ini a ves promote learning and improve literacy whenever they are
implemented
Benefits of Buddy Reading Improves Speaking Fluency
and Vocabulary
A substan al advantage of reading buddy programs is
that the student gets to improve their speaking and
vocabulary skills while they’re reading in a low-pressure
se ng.
Benefits of Buddy Reading Helps struggling readers
Children who find it hard keeping up with the rest of the class find it extremely
helpful to have an individual reading session, in which they can learn through
reading at their own comfortable pace.

Presenting to the CEO of Sime Darby, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh and Mr Phang, Deputy Principal.
I am wri ng this further report from the ar cle issued in our newsle er on 14th July 2017 wri en by Mr Phang, Deputy Principal. A er the Young Innovators’ Challenge 2017 held at the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus was completed, we were given a few days to prepare and to submit a 3-minute video introducing our science project. Finally, our TPS team – The Pheromone e-Trapper was selected and as one of the top 15 teams Na onwide, we went to Kuala Lumpur for the Sime Darby Young Innovators’ Challenge 2017 Na onal Accelerator Programme which was held from 2-8 August. Here are the brief ac vi es during the workshop.
Day 0: We were led by our science teacher, Mr Wong Hieng Jiing and arrived at iM4U Central, Puchong, Selangor where we were greeted by our mentor, Mr Solomon who went there earlier to prepare for the programme beforehand. The organizer led us to interact with each other through some ice-breaking ac vi es and gave us a brief idea of what we are going to do for the next six days.
Day 1: “Are we ready to innovate?” is what we were asked the first thing in the morning. One of the most important criteria for innova on is to understand the user and the problem that you are trying to solve. During the en re day, we were mostly doing problem valida on.
Day 2: “It is me to test out our prototype.” We were given a short period of me to build a rough design of our prototype. In the a ernoon, we had the opportunity to go out to the planta on to set up our prototype. Besides, Puan Sara, a Senior Scien st from Crop Protec on Unit, Sime Darby Planta on taught us about the methodology of pheromone extrac on and purifica on.
Day 3: “Innova on is not just having a good idea, but also the feasibility of doing it.” There were some startup mentors such as Mr Azran, CEO of iFlix, Mr Maverick of Digi-X and Ms Emily, one of the founders of Uber gave us their superb ideas and experiences about the business model and feedback of our products.
Day 4: It was finally the me to rebuild our prototypes. Day 5: A great idea comes with a good story telling which we
call “pitching”. We were given 3 minutes to pitch our ideas. In other word, it is also called the elevator’s pitch. The pitch must be short, clear and straight forward to the point in order to grab people’s a en on.
Day 6: The big day. 3 rounds of judging and presen ng our prototypes to the public.
Each day consisted of four sessions, separated by breaks and lunch. A er dinner, there was an evening session which included exercise ac vi es, reflec on and personal development ac vi es.
Furthermore, Mr Wong told us that he was also benefi ed from this programme as the organizer arranged a separate session for the teachers while they learned about the Arduino embedded system and did a minor project on it.
In conclusion, this was truly the most amazing experience we have ever had. There is no be er feeling in the world than sharing your ideas with others. Therefore, we enjoyed the process of sharing ideas with the par cipants, the spirit of team work and making new friends. We strongly encourage TPS students with a passionate heart to par cipate in this challenge next year. Star ng from our daily life, let’s build a be er future for everyone. Innovate!

Last week saw school move for the day to Pusat Kecemerlangan Akuatik for the annual swimming gala. As our photographs show, the atmosphere was electric with many parents and students getting in close to the action.
The emphasis of the event was to create a balance where our many very able performers are able to present their considerable talents in front of their peers, parents, and teachers whilst also ensuring that everybody is able to participate and has fun in doing so. This is certainly helped by our swimming coaches, parent volunteers and by the staff on the day who joined in so enthusiastically and helped ensure the smooth running of the event.
A special mention goes the following students who broke school records:
Leo Wan Ullok 2G, Jay Vikneswaran 4B, Lynn Koide 4G, Dannish Bugo 5B, Belle Chong 5G, Leo Lee 6G, Ashley Ho 6B, Penelope Hopkins 6B, Bethany French 7B, Vanessa Ho 8G and Joseph Chung TK3.
I was delighted with all of our students this year for their participation and performances in the pool.

A quiz was organized to motivate students in their learning of Mathematics on Wednesday, 9th August 2017. A check with the different teachers showed that the students have learnt concepts relating to the topic, Money. The activity required the students to apply the concepts learnt.
With an amount given, the students had to spend at the shopping area set up at Block E. The rules included:
1. The student might buy more than one for a particular item that he/she liked. 2. In all, the student must buy a minimum of 3 [for NP1 & NP2] and 5 different items [NP3 – NP5] 3. The student had to use the money till he/she had none left or the remaining change was not enough to purchase any more items.
The winner was one who had purchased according to the requirements and had change that did not allow the buying of another item.
The TOP WINNER was one who had spent the money given to buy the REQUIRED items with no change or the least change AT THE LEAST POSSIBLE TIME.
The students enjoyed the activity. IP4 and IP5 classes were also invited to join in the fun.

Every class was briefed before the activity.
