FUNDRAISING IDEAS

Use these ideas to plan fundraising events or activities, or think of some new ones on your own!

Get the Word Out: Put up posters all over campus and then table and distributepins in a place where people walk by every day.

Restaurant Sponsorship Nights: Contact local restaurants to see if they woulddonate a portion of their profits on a particular night to FACE AIDS.

Holiday Grams: On Valentine’s Day sell carnations and/or candy grams thatFACE AIDS members will deliver to the recipients. Provide a card for the person

sending the gram to write a small note to the recipient on and deliver with a treat. You don’t have to do this on a holiday, you can embrace the spirit of accompaniment any day of the week and send these notes to lift a friend’s spirits.

Community Clean-up: Not only are you providing a service to the communitybut you are fundraising for Turi Kumwe as well. Solicit pledges from friends andfamily so for every pound of trash that is collected they will donate anywherefrom a penny to a dime. Similarly, you can offer yard clean-up services. Set a feeper service and spend some of your day doing some tried and true yard work.

Charity golf tournament or 5k run: Add a twist to these traditional fundraisers

by having every hole or kilometer be sponsored by a company. On the sign thatannounces their sponsorship, also include the story of one Community HealthWorker. You could sell hole or kilometer sponsorships for the cost of oneCommunity Health Workers salary for the month, $12.

Puzzle Pieces: Set a goal for the number of donations that you want to receive. Then, print out a huge version of the FACE AIDS pin and cut it into as manypuzzle pieces as your goal for donations (if you want 100 people to donate, cut100 puzzle pieces). For each person who gives a donation, they receive a pieceof the puzzle and start putting together the large pin image. Once you’ve reachedyour goal of donations, the puzzle will be complete! Try finding a location in the

center of campus so people will see the puzzle every day as they walk by.

I Donate Because…: Find a big wall on campus. Every time someone makes adonation, take a picture of them holding up a sign that says, “I donate because”and their reason for donating to Turi Kumwe. Post their picture on the wall so thateveryone who passes by can see all of the reasons that people care about FACE

AIDS. You can also do this with videos or photos on your chapter Facebook or

chapter network page.

Knock Down HIV: Use cardboard and tissue paper to create a huge structure inthe shape of the letters: H-I-V. Every person who makes a donation gets to swinga bat at the HIV structure, eventually knocking the disease down. You could alsodo this by creating a piñata in the shape of HIV and filling it with candy or condoms. This is a great stress-reliever and can be used during midterms or finals when people need to get their stress out!

Benefit Dinner or Sports Tournament: Incorporate the stories of communityhealth workers in your fundraisers. If you are holding a benefit dinner, name thetables after community health workers and include their photo and story on thetable. If you are having a sports tournament, name your teams after thecommunity health worker and make sure to share that community health worker’sstory with the team before or during the event.

Turi Kumwe Giving Menu: The Giving Menu on the next page breaks down theTuri Kumwe Campaign into several different donation amounts.

Use it to guide your fundraising efforts:• Challenge dorms, greek organizations, or other student groups to

sponsor a community health worker’s salary. Make it a competitionto see who can raise the money first or who can sponsor the largestnumber of community health workers.

• Create a giving campaign around a holiday. Have students, friendsand family buy gifts from the menu in honor of someone else.Create an e-card or a paper card that they can send to therecipient.

• Challenge your chapter to see who can raise the $144 (or another amount of your choosing) to sponsor one community health worker first. Send an email with the giving menu to friends and familyasking them to help you reach your goal. Reward whomever reaches their goal first.

COMMUNITY BUILDING IDEAS

You can also hold events to embrace the spirit of accompaniment and spread compassion and support to members of your own community.

Local Service: Partner with a local service organization and hold chapter eventsthat provide service to the community. This can be and AIDS hospice group, ahomeless shelter, or anything else you can think of. You can add a fundraisingcomponent by getting sponsorships from friends and family for every hour thatyou dedicate to service.

Partner Chapters: Build up the FACE AIDS movement by working on the TuriKumwe Campaign with another chapter. Call up or email Maggie Savage to get

linked to a chapter. You can either support each other along the way bybrainstorming more ideas together or you can challenge each other to involvemore people or compete to raise the most money.

Random Acts of Kindess: Lift someone’s spirits by spreading random acts of kindness around your school. At your next chapter meeting or at your FACEAIDS table have a bag full of little cards with random acts of kindness written onthem. “Tell a friend something you appreciate about him/her.” “Smile at someoneas you walk by and ask how they are today.” “Bring cookies to a study group.”Ask everyone to take a card and pledge to complete the act by the end of theweek.

Post-it Your Campus: Bring post-its to your next chapter meeting and haveeveryone take a post-it, write something nice on it, and put it up somewhere oncampus. The next day as people walk by, they’ll see the note and it mightbrighten their day. You can also do this more broadly at your school by tablingwith post-its and allowing everyone to get involved or giving out a post-it to everyperson who makes a donation.

Brighten Up Classrooms: Go to every classroom on campus and write a nicenote along the top. When class starts, everyone will be happy to see a littlesurprise.

On the following pages, you will find sample flyers, posters and logos to use for all of the ideas you’ve read about.
