FAQ 17
Q. What is the standard % for plagiarism? A : If originality % is high, you can suspect plagiarism. However even the % is lower, if a part of a paper is exactly same as other person’s work, the paper is regarded as plagiarism work. Therefore, % is not the only standard to check plagiarism and you need to review the sentences and revise them. Turnitin is not a program to confirm plagiarism, but it checks originality by comparing with other sources. Thus, you should check originality by discussing with colleagues, or professors. Q. If Turnitin result confirms a paper as originality, is it okay? A : Any plagiarism checking program cannot compare all the papers in the world. Therefore, even author copies some part of a paper, the program may say it is not plagiarism paper. However, the volume of data is growing as time goes, and someday your paper may be defined as plagiarism paper. Therefore, before submission, you need to review your paper with your professor or colleagues for originality,
Q. If a paper has plagiarism with other academic institutions, can we check originality and view full text of comparing paper? A : If similarity is confirmed, it is possible to see % of originality but impossible to view full text. It is required to ask academic institution which has the paper to use full text. Q. My paper is submitted in Turnitin and it is also submitted in a publisher. Then is it considered as plagiarism? A : Editors in publishers use "iThenticate“. The compared data is different from Turnitin to iThenticate. And your paper will not be considered as plagiarism. Therefore, to protect intellectual property, it is important to save the paper in database. Also it is recommended to save the originality check result in PDF or HTML format in personal PC because sometime publishers require the evidence of submission to Turnitin.
